I know it sounds like a combination of two Oldsmobile models, but... It was actually a gas station, maybe...?

I saw a sign "Super 98" on an OLD truss-type pole in front of an abandoned station. Round, probably a 48". Other side was painted over just white, but the one side said, reather cool looking, "Super 98."

So, does anyone have any ideas on what Super 98 was? Just some random independent? An awesome Texaco or somesuch that's just hand painted over?

Sorry I don't have pics - I'm working on it.

Wes

Hey Wes, I think you might have seen a larger version of this pump plate? (British/American)

Don,

It had a lot more blue in it than that, but the 98 was on a slant like that. The 98 was further down though, and where B-A is on yours, it said Super.

I hope to get a pic. It's way out in the boonies. I spoke with the owner at the time, and he said that some guy had offered him money for it and was going to buy it. I need to go see if it's still up, take a pic, and try to buy it, for that matter...

Thanks,
Wes

On page 147 of volume 2 of the Gas Globes book there is a globe pictured with a blue script 98. Above and to the left is the word "ZIP" and "ZOOM" below the 98. It is credited to the Sunny Service Oil CO of Detroit, MI. Could this match the sign?

wfort,

It could be some sort of variant of that, as Sunny definitely did have a small presence in this area (I know of an abandoned Sunny station down the road, newer). This sign, however, did have the Super and the 98 in white, on a background that was mostly blue.

Thanks much for the info, this could turn out to be something entirely new...

You're all wrong!
It was an Indiana company.
Wes,
I tried to buy that sign 10 years ago!!! It ain't going anywhere. Got the same story about someone else was buying it.

Very interesting. Do you know anything else about the company? Was the station in question the only one?

Thanks,
Wes
