I'm seeking some advice to help me identify what the original brand was for a Bennett 646 that I just purchased. It's currently decked out as a Texaco Sky-Chief (silver, no ad panels, but metal Sky Chief signs on the doors--don't think they're originals--right size (12 x 18), but not porcelain and dated: "5-21-90". Also, they're only fastened using the two side screw holes, not the two grommets (each) at the top and bottom. The pump at some time has been painted red, but I can't see evidence of any other colours. One other unusual thing, there are four "lead" signs on the pump: one on each door above the Sky Chief sign (these are large signs that read: "Contains Lead (tetraethyl) and is to be used as motor fuel only, not for cleaning or any other use. Avoid spilling", the other two are on the pump sides, and these are the smaller, more common signs reading: "For use as a motor fuel only contains Lead (Tetraethyl)". In looking through the illustrations in PCM's Guide to Gas Pump Restroation, I only saw a few versions of a 646 that showed "lead" signs on the pump doors above the brand signs. The illustrations did NOT show a second set on the sides; however, that may have simply been a limitation of the size and format. Of those, about the only brand that I think was likely on this pump, assuming it was in service here in Canada, is White Rose, of which we had quite a number of stations in the 1950's. One other question, the "hood" type fixture over where the hose connects (not the bezel around the nozzle rest), appears to be a simple, rough-cast steel part, without any evidence of plating. Is that correct, or was it painted, and if so, what colour? Sorry for the long post, but I would appreciate any assistance that forum members could provide. Thanks! Grant
