The 24" and 30" wide 66 shield shaped signs with flat reflectors ARE VERY real providing the perimeter black piece is one piece stamped embossed metal - not two pieces overlapped together.

They are old, but newer versions of the 66 signs.

The oldest 66 signs are embossed steel with the round marbles.

There are new metal shields being sold as originals in the marketplace.

Ron is right in that the larger, aluminum, signs were used in the very last year or years of the US 66 era, I'm talking '60s. These larger versions did not attach to the poles along the highway, they were part of a very large sign that hung over the highway just like we still see on the larger highways today. The larger signs have only a fraction of the value of the true 18" shields only usually only novice buyers are interested in them. I've had a number of them and got very little interest anytime on ebay

I'm not an expert on them by any means, but the one we are selling is aluminum for sure and is real for sure. I've seen ones like we are selling in February sell at other shows/auctions for $2500+ in worse condition. Last year, we sold a current-use modern black one with the white circle in the middle for nearly $400 and an aluminum one without any reflectors from probably the 1970's for nearly $1000.

The sign is in my possession and a collector/friend of mine has seen it and touched it and has already submitted an absentee bid somewhere between $1000 & $2000 (don't want to publize his exact bid), so apparently they have SOME value.

$4,800 is the highest price we've witnessed on a sale of an original flat reflector sign, and that was 2-3 years ago.

On several occasions, we have seen the smaller embossed shields that we believe were reproductions (not the originals), sell in the thousands - one time in excess of $3,000 and the other time in excess of $5,500.
