If one of them farmers came to your house and asked about a pump he saw that was just like the one he used to have on his farm, how would the conversation go?
When does the hobby become an obsession?

Liam and dodo. Good comments. Travis, pumps may be history to us oldgassers, and it is admirable to wantto save them. But to the farmers we are trying to buy from they may be family memories where old granddad taught them how to drive the tractor or they are just another piece of equipment on the farm. I stopped by a farm the other day and the guy had a 36B, a Wayne 40,and a 70 and an old Ottawa visible. I asked him if they might be for sale. He said, "For Sale?!?, heck, I'm still using them. When I walked over from the farm house, sure enough, still hooked up and going, except for the Ottawa. I am trying to convince him to let me replace them with newer pumps or cash. He said he couldn't sell them as they are just a part of the place and it wouldn't be the same without them. Greed? No. Stupid? No. Someone who appreciates the history as they are.

Travis. I hope no one ever treats/treated your mom that way. That's not right.

Good luck on the hunt everyone

I completely agree with Alex.
"If it is not a good deal..walk away, but maintain your dignity and their's. It's called being a good ambassador for the hobby."
The world is made up of lots of different characters... if it wasn't, how boring it would be. If we do not like the price at "store A" we just move on and buy at "store B" Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose... but maintaining our dignity and the dignity of others is just good human nature. I just hope no one ever has such little respect for my 80 year old Mother that they would treat her that way.

Travis, what line of work are you in that you have time to do all this exploring? The best I can do is squeeze in a vacation day once in a blue moon to hit the back roads.

"Do you try to save every historical car that is rotting away?" YEP - I do and the same goes for signs - buildings, etc even though I only collect Model T's and Gas Pumps. If I do not want them I will find buyers for them at a CUT rate. I feel that history needs to be passed on not tossed away. Yea they may have bought them, and they have the rights to destory them. I see that all the time with the "hot rodders". But thinking something is worth millions and I am trying to "con" them out of it for scraps to make a mint is another thing. If I am treaded with respect I will respect.

As for the other comments about "farmer still using them and the one he is not, wanting to keep" Yea, I have run into that, no big deal. I even check back on those and send them xmas cards from me with pictures of what I do, most of the time they come home to me someday. I am working with the Kansas History Museum to have a place to put all of my cherry restored pumps and the wood wheel cars when I die.

As for the other question "what do I do to have all this time" 2 words - "trust fund".

r49th said "what would happen if a farmer came to my house wanting a pump like he used to have" It would be sold for cost if he was for real.

I got an e-mail from another asking how I would feel if someone did this to my mom.. HA HA - that would ROCK!

For the last 6 years my mom was starting to think she was going nuts because of the things we did to her and never told her what was going on. We would mess with her all the time. I went over to her house at 3 am once with a friend and we moved all her furniture around in her living room giving it a new style = we left without telling her or even waking her up – that was fun, she did not remember moving it around.

For years my sister and I would grab things she was using when she was not looking, and hide them then deny it was us.

Since I was a kid I would take her open cigarettes and put them in the fridge. I even would hide the remote control to her TV in the freezer then leave the house without her even knowing I was there.

Mom finally caught my sister and I when we stole all the fish out of her fish aquarium and replaced them with a small shark. Mom did not remember buying the shark and drove over to my house thinking she bought the shark and it ate all of her high dollar fish – well – my wife did not know what we did and sat mom next to my aquarium with all her fish.

Yea, I am a BAD BOY and my sister is worse… Life has to be fun sometimes.

I've delt with all types of people over the years....the stupid,to rich to know, to poor to care what ever they are labeled but you have to give them one thing...they feel great knowing they have something we want!
Here's one I'm on: A building closes for a few years, I take a peak & found something I've been dying to have. We call leave the message for a call back, first time ever he calls back with in a day. Now this is becoming a first for me: the man "EXCITED to sell the item" & states he's got 5 more buildings that are full & we may make offer on any or all items & that he's shocked that someone would want used old advertising items-HELLO! I now think differently, I will take 100 door shuts if it means 1 door opens like this. "KEEP ON KNOCKING"

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I was taught to treat people the way I wanted to be treated. Surely with respect and dignity. Manners are a must as well. I for one do not find this post amusing at all! Do not see why anyone would be proud enough to brag about this? As always, just me talking.

Did this happen before the SlitheringSnakePump episode???

If it did the snake might have been Karma..

I got to say I would be the first to laugh if she got your license # and her boys came to visit!!

Its not that we never thought of doing something like that, we just control ourselves..
