Does anybody know what the world's oldest operating gas station might be? I got an email from a guy in Australia that has a house from 1913 that was turned into a gas station in 1923 and is still in operation. I'm also curious about any other oldies that might be great for including at my website.

Thanks,
Debra Jane Seltzer http://www.agilitynut.com/gas/1a.html

Debra,

Welcome to Oldgas! I think that I am speaking for everyone here when I say that we all love your website, and reference it quite often.

I hope you find the answer you're looking for. The oldest station I've seen that was still in operation was a 40s Gulf, so I can't be much help here... Hey - at least it is still full service only

Wes

Glad that you finally made it here Debra.... I've sent people your way more time than I can count. I think it's kinda ironic though, this is a question that I would be asking you.... Welcome aboard....

Thanks guys for the warm welcome! As much as I love old gas stations, and that's a LOT, I still have much to learn and see. Feel free to send me photos & suggestions re: stations that might be good for my site. I have been a fan of oldgas for years & include lots of links to it at my site.

As for the oldest station -- I've poked around in all the books and while there is lots of historical talk & old photos, and lots of pix of stations still around from the 1920s, there doesn't seem to be mention of still-existing older ones. Please let me know if you are able to find anything out. While the Perley-Burrill claims to be the oldest (a big sign out front), I don't know what year that is:

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the site Debra, There is a station in Zilla, Washington that just reopened. Last time I drove by the Teapot dome station in Michael Witzel book Gas Station Memories page 16 was open. The visible pumps were gone but some new ones where there and it looked like they were open. I believe that station was opened in 1926, but not sure. Richard
