GOT THIS EMAIL FROM THE PHILIPPINES THIS MORNING:
-----------------末末末末末末末末末末末
Hi Mr. AG,
I saw your SOCONY post at the oldgas.com forum and need some assistance telling the exact age of a lead seal I found. The lead seal has the words SOCONY in a 5-pointed shield and was found in Manila, Philippines where I live. Unfortunately I cannot make out all the other small words on the shield even with a 20x loupe.
I know that SOCONY has been in use from 1911 to 1966(?) but would like to know if you can give me a more exact age.
Thanks for your help,
Douglas Wong

The only thing I can add is that it appears to be a crimped lead seal from off of a calibrated meter, from a gas pump, delivery truck or bulk plant perhaps. That could help narrow down the era depending on where it was found, what was nearby and when, etc.

At least in the US, SOCONY stopped as an independent company in 1931 when they merged with Vacuum oil co, to be Socony-Vacuum. THis is the time when they stopped using ths Socony shield. Maybe it continued in other parts of the world, but I don't think so.

What a neat little piece of history! It does look just like the lead seals and copper wire that we all would find on our water meters for example. Cool Larry
