I was in a discussion the other day and they asked why they started the 1/10th digit and I could not answer him. Today they only use 9/10 but I have gotten pumps in the past that were set all diff. like 4/10 and 7/10.
I told him I would find out so, I'm asking for your help. Can someone explain the history on this.
Thanks, Allsho80

They have to do this because of the Tax's.

Like when they up the tax 1/4 of a cent on gasoline - that will effect the 9/10 setting on the gas pump so it all evens out to an even cent.

If you ever took a course in advertisement you will learn that this is all hype. People don't want to spend $100.00 for something, but they will buy it for $99.00. Gas sold at 1.99 9/10 is a lot less than $2.00 per gallon.

YEAH, BUT WHEN I SEE A SIGN FOR GAS PRICE OF $1.999, I SAY 2 DOLLARS. I ALWAYS ROUND IT UP. 1/10 OF 1 CENT ISN'T WORTH GETTING A MENTION! LOL!!

Well I'm no expert, but I have NEVER seen a tax decal stating that the taxes equalled a fraction of a cent....

The fraction dates back to the competetive nature of the first gasolEne sales outlets. The fraction was added or subtracted for "pricing" reasons..... It has been since the beginning of gasoline sales, and has been an accepted form of pricing.

How about those tax's on the gas today, last time I was in Denver at the oil marketers trade show they had those tax stickers, I am not sure but they were like 53 cents + per gallon.

Here in Topeka they just raised the state road tax 1/10 of a cent... It seems everyday they are raising taxs on something.

Trust me on this, I do know people like this.

If most of the town is selling at say 1.59.9 and someone puts theirs at 1.59.4, some folks will drive across town and burn more gas than they are saving, to get the deal...

maybe it was dolts, not folks...

There is pending legislation in several states to eliminate the partial cents. It seems to make sense, as 1 cent per gallon in todays prices is about equal to 1/10 cent per gallon 50 years ago.

I agree with Jack Sim. There may have been pricing with a fraction of less than 9/10 in the early days of gasoline marketing. However, in the modern era all gasoline is sold with the 9/10 of a cent for marketing reasons. Just as Jack explained, the intend is to fool you into thinking it's a little cheaper (i.e., $1.99 9/10 vs. $2.00). Some may think it's misguided but it's still a valid marketing ploy. Any station would be foolish to buck the practice by using whole cents. Most consumers will only notice the price without the fraction.

That's my 1 9/10 cents!!

Just back from a trip from California to Oklahoma and back through Colorado. Here you go: California 2.69.9, Arizona 2.49.9, New Mexico same as Arizona, now we get to Oklahoma at 2.29.9 and Oklahoma City 2.06.9, Kansas 2.42.9, Colorado back up to 2.49.9, didn't check Utah, Nevada 2.39.9 and back to being screwed in California. I read an article in USA Today and it said that gas was going to drop below 2.00 this past week. Well we sure didn't see it
