Hey everyone. I've lost access to the paint booth I used to use to paint the few pumps that I do. Has anyone ever painted outside with decent results? I don't aim to do museum quality restoration as I just keep my pumps for my own pleasure. I'll probably use a single stage system from Sherwin Williams.

Thanks
Chris

I've painted a few pumps outside with great results.Just try to pick a day thats not windy and I try to spray in the shade and once they tack up I move them into the sunlight and bake them.My pumps look great and only require a little wet sanding to knock the nibs out of them.I use simular prouducts like Dupount centari or ppg delstar.I like single stage better than base clear as it looks more factory than the base clear, and it's cheaper.

Any problems with dust, etc in the air? Also, temperature may be of concern to me. I'd like to paint this weekend, but I'm looking at 50F max. Really don't want to have a 48hr dry time. Don't wanna wait til May though! Ahhh it was nice to have a heated paint shop at my disposal.

Painting outdoors is like Track & Field practice for me. It consists of painting the pumps panels and parts in an area where the paint won't get on anything you care about in your yard and frantically running the wet pieces into the bug free garage to dry. The faster you get each panel or piece into the garage the less chance you will have of getting knats and other little bugs stuck in your paint. I've done a G&B 176 Visible, Wayne 60, & Tokheim 39 short all with base/clear using this "sprinting to the garage" method. The only problem I see with base/clear is that you have twice as many sprints to the garage. I knew that track & field and cross country in high school would pay off for something. Good Luck. ~Jason

I forgot to mention, I have only painted in temps above 65 degrees. It might be a good idea to have a heater running in your garage where the panels will be drying to get the temp in garage a little higher than 50 degrees. Just a thought. I never had problems with dust as long as it wasn't windy. Hope that helps.

It's going to dry SLOOOW in those temps, you can get reducer for cooler temps which will help. You are spoilled from that spray booth.LOL I never really had a problem with dust,if you could get your garage a little warmer to dry the panels you would be fine.It is nice to have the sheetmetal warm when you spray it falshes the paint quicker which helps prevent runs.

I paint outside all the time. IF you are using auto paint they can get you set up for cold temp painting. I usually paint when it is 70+ outside ALL NIGHT and like to use rustolem quarts sprayed with my hvlp gun. Then when I buff it out after putting everything back together I get a nice clear coat look.

One thing about it, Out side you don't get shadows where you may get a little thin on paint. Some booths I have been in you have to almost stand on your head to see every angle.

Many auto paints have hardeners that are added to the mix. They require a certain minimum temperature to do their job. Check on the specs for the paint you are using. The ones I'm familiar with need at least 60 degrees to cure the mix. Below that the product just sits there and won't cure.

You can find fast (low temp) hardeners and fast reducers but be sure you are within the recommended temperature range for the product. The stuff is too expensive to waste it by not having it set up right.
