I use the 15 amp setting on my charger. If the water is 65 degrees or warmer you should start seeing little bubbling near the metal and later some foam. This is a sign it's working. If you don't, the water might be too cold or you might not be getting a good connection at the alligator clips. I did learn to unplug the charger when touching the alligator clips. One very calm morning, while removing a door for my barrel, I removed one of the clips causing a spark. Evidently I had made enough hydrogen to be "set off" by the spark. It sounded like a shotgun going off. Not to mention giving me the feeling I'd just been shot at. I had messed with the connectors many times w/o unplugging the charger first with no worries but I don't do it now without unplugging. You would think if I can make hydrogen this easy, someone ought to be able to make it run my vehicle down the road pretty cheap. LOL I also put a cement block inside the plastic barrel to keep the door/panel from contacting the stainless. This would be like the + and - clips touching each other. Good luck! Still going very slowly, not sure whats wrong. Its been in all day and the paint has bubbled, but not even to the extent that was shown here after 20 minutes. The water has stayed warm. I did, however, use Oxyclean instead of the Arm & Hammer brand stuff. After looking around online I was given the impression that they're pretty much the same, but I could be way wrong. Couldn't find the Arm & Hammer so I went with this. IP: Logged |

Chris, I followed this thread when it was new. And like you, DID not get the stated results. BUT, it does work only alot slower than most think. Walk away, forget about stated results. Lots of things effect time in this process. For me, it takes AT LEAST 24 hours. I don't know why. Altitude, I'm at 5280. Temperature, I tried it in a cold garage. Fact is it works and is almost FREE. I did figure out that the warmer the water the better. Larry IP: Logged |

Well, I just added some Borax (see if that does better than the Oxyclean) and switched the charger from 15a/6v manual to 15a automatic. So, I'll check it in the morning. I didn't notice that my 15a manual setting was for 6v, maybe that had something to do with it? I was tempted to stick it on 110a engine start, but that just didn't seem like a good idea ![]() IP: Logged |

Well, I let the panel sit overnight. I scraped off an area for better contact with the alligator clip and it definitely improved things. You could see the bubbles coming off the panel and it stripped a lot more paint. Still didn't really touch the rust unfortunately. I looked in a couple different stores around here yesterday. Couldn't find the Arm & Hammer brand washing soda, so I settled on Borax which seems to be close. Its working way better than the Oxyclean. Not sure what else to try though. IP: Logged |

...I thought this was a GREAT topic, and wanted to bring it back up with some new (and hopefully useful) info...look here for Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (click on the links): http://www.soapsgonebuy.com/product_p/ah1001.htm http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006M64XE/103-2267374-7273404 http://store.43folders.com/kitchen-15755921-B0006M64XE-Arm_Hammer_Super_Washing_Soda _55_oz ...ONE of these should be able to get you some Arm & Hammer Washing Soda...and supposedly Shop and Save has a house brand... ...ain't Google a wonderful thing? TIP = you can get a FREE 55 gallon plastic drum at most car wash places, just stop in and ask the attendent. The cleaners they get come in these drums and they will usually give them to you for free.

Just a point of info! Any metal can be used as the 'sacrificial piece'. Just type in 'Electrolysis paint removal' on your home page. One guy uses rebar! Does not matter. Stainless just lasts the longest. Even a mention about someone who built a 2X4 frame and lined it in plastic and did a truck frame!! You're imagine is the limit. A kiddie swimming pool is large enough to do a car fender. Does work well and ALMOST free. Larry IP: Logged |

Yea, I used rebar first - pain the the butttttttttttttttttt.... I spent more time cleaning the rebar then it was worth. I will be lining one drum with stainless, and then cutting down another with 1 inch holes all over it, I mean all over it - the second will be put inside the outer barrel with about a 1 inch gap between the two. This will be an insulating barrel.

I'll have to check out the local carwash place, see if they can hook me up. I still don't know whether one of those 55 gallon drums will be tall enough to do 1/2 of a Wayne 70 skin. We'll see I guess. IP: Logged |

Hmm, not sure about the soft drink bottler. I'll have to look around. I've pretty much resigned myself to having the stripes in the middle and having to blast the rest. Oh well, less blasting I guess ![]() IP: Logged |
