Seeing Cheese's shorty 50 brings up an issue I've wondered about. Ever since acquiring my 50 display I was sure it was originally a display and was hacked off into a short pump by someone who couldn't be bothered with all that glass. I recently acquired a 50A model wayne (based on a 40A pump with external sight glass) and it was like the one Cheese has pictured. I have always been told that they were cut down display models but this one is a shorty and looks factory. It definitely is not an acetylene torch hack job. It appears to have been done at the factory or a talented jobber. Whats your opinion on this ? Did "airport" pumps really exist or were they made ? I would personally like to know since if original, I might leave this one short rather than raising it back up into a display.
thanks
Larry

I believe that's how they were supposed to be. Firestone seemed to like to use stubby pumps -- like yours, Cheese's and the 72R. Not sure why, but it was definitely the case. I know all the 72R were apparently for Firestone. Going out on a limb, esp. after seeing Cheese's short 50, I am going to say that the short 50 was probably just ffor firestone too. Does yours have any dark blue paint?

I think the firestone pumps have porcelain sides on them, mine is just painted sheetmetal. It looks to have been school bus yellow at one time. I know several guys like Scobie have display models that are firestone.

Maybe someone has some photos of early firestone stores/stations that could shed some light on the firestone gas saga.
