Just thought I'd post my story from this morning as I'm still bummed about it. I don't get many chances to find pumps still "in the wild" around my area, so when I drove by an old falling down house with a pump sitting beside the garage it got me excited. I decided to stop by and ask whether it was still in use/for sale as I couldn't tell without walking too far on the man's property. I knocked on the door and an grouchy old guy answered and just said "Whats your problem". I explained who I was and that I liked to collect old pumps. I had a few pictures of my small pump collection with me and showed him. He simply said "I still use that pump". He said I could look at it though, so I went over and took a look. It was a short Bennett, nothing special, but in decent shape. Except this thing hadn't been used in probably 25 years. It was all grown over and the hose was completely rotted off. Guess he just wanted to get rid of me!

Chris,

Go back there with some cash in hand. Maybe he'll be a little less grumpy. When I want something and get that kind of treatment, I've found that money seems to change people's mood. Take some cash with you, knock on his door and apologize for stopping by, tell him you want to buy it and offer him what you think is fair for the pump. The worst thing he could do is to tell you to get lost. You might end up leaving with the pump. If not, leave your name and phone number and tell him to give you a call if he changes his mind.

Mac

As they say money talks & bs walks. But when they see it it does change there mood somehow. Good luck on the pump.

Yeah I did offer to buy it from him, but he wasn't having any of it. Think I'll leave a note in his box with my number on it, and give him a plate to cap off the globe hole in the top, as it was open to the elements. Maybe he'll give me a ring.

Usually guys like that will take a liken to you if you stop by on non-cold sunny nice lazy days. He is probably thinking you are one of those antique scabs that want the pump for 10 bucks.

I have also run into that same thing from the wife - but the story goes the old man is in a care home and said not to sell anything because he will need it when he gets well again...

Good Luck - most of the time they will lighten to you - if not keep track of it and watch for an estate sale.

Donuts, pie (dont bring REX!!)

Dont hurt to just happen to have a sixpack or a bottle behind the tuck seat either. Nor does bringing along good-looking help hurt either..

Go the distance and get the goods.. can take years but oh so sweet when you finally bring-er-home......
