LEONARD REFINERIES WAS FOUNDED IN 1936 FROM THE FAILED McCLANAHAN REFINERY THAT HAD STARTED IN 1933 IN ALMA, MICHIGAN. JAMES LEONARD (WALTER'S BROTHER)OF LEONARD DRILLING CO. BROUGHT IN THE FIRST WELL IN THE NEARBY CRYSTAL FIELD IN THE SPRING OF 1935.
LEONARD BOUGHT THE ROOSEVELT REFINERY OF MT. PLEASANT, MI IN THE VERY EARLY 1950's AND THE MID-WEST REFINERIES IN 1955.
MID-WEST HAD REFINERIES AT ALMA AND GRAND RAPIDS, MI. LEONARD DISMANTLED THE BRIDGE ST. ALMA REFINERY IN 1966.
LEONARD BOUGHT FROM BARNEY SHERMAN OF FLINT, MI HIS CAVALIER STATIONS IN 1967 AND IN 1968 THE CAVALIER BRAND WAS CONVERTED TO BEST.
UNUSUAL FOR AN OIL COMPANY TO OWN BUT LEONARD DID WAS LEONARD OUTDOORS INC. WHICH WAS MICHIGAN OUTDOORS TV PROGRAM WITH MORT NEFF AND THE GREATER MICHIGAN BOAT SHOW INC.
IN 1953 LEONARD WAS THE FIRST REFINERY TO OFFER A 96 OCTANE GASOLINE AND BY 1957 HAD THE EQUIPMENT TO PRODUCE OVER 105 OCTANE GASOLINE.
TOTAL BOUGHT A STAKE OF LEONARD IN 1966 AND TOOK OVER LEONARD IN 1970 AND THEN CLOSED THE REFINERY IN 1999.
THE BRANDS THAT I KNOW OF CONNECTED TO LEONARD ARE LEONARD OF COURSE AS WELL AS McCLANAHAN GOLD SEAL, MID-WEST, ROC, POWER FLIGHT, CAVALIER AND BEST.

LEONARD STATION LOCATIONS AS OF JUNE 1958
AS OF THIS DATE THEY DIDN'T SHOW ANY STATIONS IN THE UPPER PENINSULA.
I HAVE A PICTURE OF A LEONARD MARINA LOCATION IN THE "U P"
MAYBE A "YOOPER" CAN TELL US IF THEY HAD MANY STATIONS IN THE "U P" ?

JAN. 8, 1960 ARTICLE IN THE MICHIGAN OIL & GAS NEWS:

FEDERAL SUIT TIES-UP BIG SOHIO-LEONARD MERGER. THE SUIT CHARGES THAT THE MAJORS WOULD CONTROL 90% OF THE GASOLINE MARKET IN MICHIGAN IF THE DEAL GOES THROUGH.

THE OTHER DEAL THAT PRECEDED THIS FAILED ONE WAS THE AURORA (SPEEDWAY 79) AND THE OHIO OIL CO (MARATHON)

WHAT WOULD OUR LEONARD COLLECTIBLES LOOK LIKE IF THIS DEAL HAD GONE THROUGH ?
