Looks like a grease can. I can't read the type of grease.

Was this used to re-fill grease guns?

It's NOT for the Typewriter next to it! Was this used to re-fill grease guns? YES, before they were replaced w/ Grease Cartridges.

The cartridges haven't replaced the bucket yet...... you can still get grease in 35lb. buckets or 120lb. drums. Here is a link to a picture of a gear lube pump and the grease gun pumps would be just like this one except in place of the hose there would be an adapter to hook up to the gun and there would also be round follower plate that went inside the bucket. http://oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=325828#Post325828
