just got back from a small town in southeast Texas and got these two signs.
Can anyone tell me what they are worth and the time period that these were made? Also what does Terraplane mean on the Hudson sign.........I didn't pay much for them, but counting wet feet for most of the day (rained the whole time)and knocking on doors I feel that it was worth it.....

Hudson 42 inch Dia....double sided

goodyear....24" X 70"

thanks, Paddy

Hey paddy...

The terraplane was a model of car made by Hudson..it was supposed to evoke the styling of an aircraft, but the use of a car...Remember bluesman Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues"?? It was a 30's era car but i dont know exactly when it wouuld have been marketed...Great sign, BTW!!

I am not 100 % sure but I am thinking 800 is a low price on the Hudson and 300 on the Goodyear..

You had a good day from what I can see!!

Paddy, I figured you would have called and said "Hey Brent I know where some signs are that I really don't want, you can have them"...some friend you are! I think the Hudson sign could be a real sleeper. There can't be many of those. Great finds!

Send them to me, I'll hange them on MY FENCE !
Your a BILLUPS collector, NOT a sign collector.
Don't worry about what they are worth till your ready to SELL.
I Don't understand why EVERYONE wants to know IF THEY GOT A GOOD DEAL when they have ALREADY BOUGHT THE SIGNS, GLOBE, CAN, PUMP ETC. !
IF the economy takes a dump, so does this stuff. Enjoy them till it's time to pass them off for someone else to preserve the past.
WE never really own these items, WE are just the present
CUSTODIANS OF THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Well stated professor; all we're doing is keeping them out of the dump & recycle piles.

well db....I am still new to this sign collecting and am learning everday. There has been a few that I have paid too much for. Thought I could get some advice from members on this site that have alot more expertise than I. If I were collecting cans I would value yours and some one like Scott (quartcans) thoughts. As far as not owning them, your wrong! I paid for them and they are in my shop....will I own them forever? No. Someone will own them in the future and hopefully not in the near future....

Own it or not..that is the question...
and a fine philosophical debate as well, preferrably over a cold beverage and a good time spent with good friends. Either viewpoint is valid, I believe, but each of us has our own motivations and needs which are met by old petro items. Myself..I got into the hobby having grown up an oil field brat, who's father worked for Humble as a petroleum landman (there's a lost profession), and having memories of the gas stations, cars and advertisements of the late 60's and 70's. I also take it as a point of pride when a friend or acquaintence notices one of the items I have restored or collected, and the light suddenly dawns in their head...BOOM..another collector is born. I feel a certain 'custodial' sense of my collection, as it is as ephemeral as life itself...I had a collection of nearly 20K value disposed of by my ex wife while i was out of state and no chance at all to recover any of it, so I just try to enjoy old gas stuff, and hopefully pass along their sense of heritage, history and "American-ship". Thank you for the soap box.

Yep, you paid to display them in your shop. BUT this STUFF will still be here when WE are gone.
Re: GENERAL PETROLEUM MUSEUM in Washington state, Jeff Peterson saved it from going to a landfill, now he's gone & it has many New CUSTODIANS.

"I Don't understand why EVERYONE wants to know IF THEY GOT A GOOD DEAL when they have ALREADY BOUGHT THE SIGNS, GLOBE, CAN, PUMP ETC."

I agree.
If you bought them to keep and you can enjoy them at the price you paid then you got a good deal.

Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros.

NICE FIND ON THE SIGNS,,,BOTH SIGNS WOULD DATE IN THE 1934 THRU 1939 TIME FRAME. EVEN WITH SOME DINGS, I WOULD GUESS $800 FOR THE HUDSON AND $500 FOR THE GOODYEAR, BUT WHO KNOWS, I AM AMAZED EVERY DAY AT THE PRICES SOME BRING..I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM AS THEY ARE, I DO NOT LIKE PAINTED OVER PORCELIAN SIGNS, THAT ARE CALLED "RESTORED" GIVE ME SIGNS WITH A FEW FLAWS ANY DAY...RD
