Congratulations! Very old and very rare Fry 17! Should have an external pump. Base is cast as are globe and light holder at top. Someone has taken the pump off and replumbed it to fill from the top with alternate plumbing. Heres a picture of what it should look like!Mine is a ten gallon and yours is the rarer yet 5 gallon!!

Ron Scobie might be able to re-cast the lower door panel[s] for you.

Yea a friend told me yesterday that it was not gonna be a easy task finding the lower door panel for the base , and the pump! We shall see? I'm really curious how thick the pour around the base is, i took a sledge and popped it a couple of times & there was some vibration, so i figured i was gonna be able to get the base loosened up ,then take the pry bar and try to wiggle loose, but that did not happen! that base is still connected underground! If anyone knows of these parts being around ,"SOLD" I want em,I need em & will look out $$ on a referral! thanks for the help!

Kevin,
The 5gal is correct to Fill from the Top as plumbed.
I see you are missing the selector handle [1-5 gal] & the external pump w/ handle, quick shut off gate valve &/or Totalizer [not all came w/ totalizer].

Chris--If you look at my pictures, you'll see that I'm misssing the same door as you and also the one above it that you still have! I'm pretty sure we can get Ron Scobie to cast us a reproduction door for the base.If I remember right, Ron also has one of these pumps! I would rally like some photos of the other small access door and measurements for it! I'm going to be satisfied if I can get these covers reproduced as I know I'll never find an original!

As far as your base--it looks like it should come free? Are there any bolts hidden under the dirt? There isn't anything on the inside to hold it down--its just bolts thru the base ring on the outside! If you keep working at it--it will come! Just remember that the thing is cast iron, so take care not to break it as you'll never find another! Finding the external pump might be possible but it ain't gonna happen overnight my friend!
Just to be sure, take a metal detector and check the area for a good distance around the pump, as it may have been removed many years ago and laid to one side and been covered over with dirt from the ages!

This is my 17 w/ ext. pump. Originally this sat on a concrete base, but found a steel base to mount it to.

What does it meas. center to center for pump mounting holes? Those pumps are not that hard to find.

Yea the threaded bolts were protruding out of the bottom of base "4 bolts" i popped those off with sledge! so where would have the totalizer been mounted originally ? or i should say dose it look like mine had a meter originally ,or was supposed to have a meter ? my id tag is missing! How was fuel calculated if there was no meter confused ? or is it the manual adjustment inside the access door "on pump" that would have selected the amount of fuel you were pumping?

Inside the tall access door on the there is a tube that extends up into the cylinder. There should be a handle that allows the tube to be moved up and down to set the level that the gas can be pumped up into the cylinder. The metal notched fingers allow for setting the tube to 5 one gallon increments. These tubes are usually frozen in place and many times cracked. The handle is available as a repro.

Tube can be set in 1gal increments [1-5].
Here is the Totalizer for the early G.L.M. pumps. Attached @ outlet & had a bracket bolted @ top to dome. I'm missing the shutoff wheel & cover flap for meter.

Page 173 2nd edition bottom right is a 17 like yours.

Neat picture Dick! I've never seen one of those totalizers before. Would the pump still have had the lever type shut off valve in conjunction with the totalizer?

Pic's in book don't show the Quick Shut-off being used w/ this totalizer or the Neptune Totalizer.

Oh wow.....thanks for posting that DB ,now on your 17 in pic, there is a 90 elbow coming out the top,is that the piece that would have attached the totalizer up top,& is that totalizer the one for the 17 in pic ! appreciate your input fellas ,i really am still high on this pump, absolutely thrilled to own it!! also there is eveidence of a small sign down low on pump, witch is the correct ethyl sign ? would it be the curved round one? "THE COOL LOOKING ONE" OR THE 6" X 7"

Not sure why it has the Street El on top except for a vent [was there when I got the pump & left it]. On backside top of Totalizer it has a cast ring for a bolt to bracket.

Just above the 4 bolts you removed to remove the upper section, there is an inspection plate/cover, is that what your asking about or are your asking about a 6" x 7" sign? A 6" x 7" would be a CONTAINS LEAD warning sign. ETHYL signs are Round & were added to pumps selling it after 1923. The earlier ones have ETHYL GASOLINE CORPORATION, NEW YORK, U.S.A. spelled out in banner @ bottom, later ones have ETHYL CORPORATION @ bottom.
