My name is Ric Esgar from Pueblo Colorado and I collect CONOCO memorabilia. I am not a Conoco expert by any means. I go by the name Ducecpe on OLDGAS, I use that name as I use to have a blown 32 Ford Hi-Boy 3 window coupe. My son is Brandon, Besgar on OLDGAS. He and I use to race & build Sprint Cars and Street Rods. That was before we got hooked on GAS n OIL!! Thanks to my wife who bought me my first gas pump and oil lubester for my 48th birthday. She did not know it but she had great taste, it was a Wayne 60 done in Conoco! I am sure she didn’t have a clue what she was starting.. My grandfather owned a Ford Dealership in 1937 in Las Animas, Colorado. Along with cars he also sold Texaco gas. He then opened a Conoco Gas Station in the 40’s and 50’s in Wiley Colorado. I remember going to his station as a little kid and just hanging around listening to the old bell every time a car pulled up to the pump! I can still smell those gas and grease smells. So I guess that is why I started to collect gas n oil, mainly Conoco in 2000, in memory of him.

Now for a little history.

Rocky Mountain Oil: 1875 - 1913

The company millions called Conoco began in 1875 as the Continental Oil and Transportation Co., one of the first petroleum marketers in the West. Isaac Elder Blake, Conoco's founder, observed that townspeople in Ogden, Utah, still used candles and whale oil to light their homes. Although kerosene was available, hauled by the case from a primitive refinery in Colorado, it was too expensive for the thrifty pioneers. Blake figured if kerosene were imported from eastern refineries by railroad tank cars and sold in bulk, prices would drop and demand would rise. Continental was formed to capitalize on this idea. On November 25, 1875, the Continental Oil and Transportation Company was born.
Two tank cars were purchased to transport refined kerosene to Ogden, and, later, to oil storage stations built along rail lines in several Western states. At the stations, the kerosene was measured into barrels, hoisted upon horse-drawn wagons and delivered to area general stores for sale. Business was brisk, and Blake invested the profits into more tank cars, wagons and bulk stations.
Looking for a way to sell kerosene in bustling San Francisco, Blake directed the construction of the first pipeline in California, from a railroad station in Pico (near Santa Clarita) to Ventura, where the oil was loaded onto steamers sailing to the Golden Gate. New products were introduced, including benzene to clean stoves, candles, ready-mixed paints, hoof oil for horses and even a popular medicinal ointment.
Continental later sold birthday candles, beaded and fringed kerosene lamps and paraffin chewing wax, bubblegum having yet to be invented. Blake was blessed with unmatched ingenuity. He even patented a five-gallon oilcan positioned on a rocker so customers needn't lift the heavy container - the first ergonomically designed dispenser!
Standard Oil took control of Continental in 1885, relinquishing it in 1913 upon order by the U.S. Supreme Court. By then, Continental was the top marketer of petroleum products in the Rocky Mountain region, much of its output refined into gasoline as automobiles took to the road in greater number. Continental built the West's first filling station in 1909, and invested in a fleet of delivery trucks, each with three tanks to deliver different types of fuel. Later fuel facilities even sported glass cylinders so customers could see the fuel as it was pumped.
Over the next 20 years, the company built more than 1,000 service stations in 15 states, each emblazoned with the trademark Continental soldier. It eased its way into the production and refining of crude oil, merging with several other producers, but always retaining the name, Continental Oil. One of them was an upstart company in the unlikeliest of places - Ponca City, Oklahoma. Together, they would take on the whole industry.

Most of the pictures I will post are from my collection. I know there are a lot of OLDGASSERS out there that have a lot of great Conoco items to show us all.. So PLEASE post em all even if it is a duplicate picture! I don't have a lot of Minuteman items so I will start with those.. Marland's Oil: 1913 - 1928
E.W. Marland was the antithesis of a rugged Oklahoma cowboy - an anglophile favoring English fox hunting, Norfolk jackets and knickers. But, these refined duds and pastimes did little to conceal Marland's true nature, a rough and tumble oil explorer with a penchant for risks, the bigger the better.
After losing his luck in the oilfields of Pennsylvania, Marland headed west to Ponca City, a small Oklahoma trading town "no more than a wide place in the road," an early company employee recalled. Marland made several excursions to the famed 101 Miller Bros. Ranch in search of oil, convinced immense deposits lay beneath. Geology was his divining rod, he said, a science yet to be proven in the hunt for crude.
On nearby land, Marland secured a lease from the Ponca Indian tribe to drill at the base of a sacred burial plot. After a few failures, the first well struck oil in 1911. The gusher provided the first real evidence of oil in the mid-continental region, sparking the equivalent of a Gold Rush for oil.
Marland quickly built a small refinery to process the crude, and incorporated the Marland Oil Company to market the refined output. Hundreds of service stations were built, many drawing from Marland's personal taste in architecture -- they looked like tiny English cottages.
His "Midas Touch" brought in one well after another, including the giant Burbank and Tonkawa fields. As money flowed like the oil beneath, Marland invested the proceeds in the industry's first research division, which developed seismography techniques and new drilling methods to discover even more oil.
Soon Marland was dubbed the "millionaire producer of Ponca City." He lived the high life, playing polo on his formal estate in Ponca City with many luminaries of the day, such as humorist Will Rogers. But he was equally generous to his adopted city, endowing schools, libraries and public art.
In the late-1920s, the financier J.P. Morgan, Jr., obtained control of the Marland Oil board upon providing a $5 million line of credit to the company. When profits fell in 1928, the board replaced E.W. Marland as president with Dan Moran, a hard-boiled Texaco vice president. Not one to be down for long, Marland later resurfaced as the Governor of Oklahoma.
Moran oversaw the merger of Marland Oil with Continental Oil in 1929. It was a logical fit: Continental needed a steady supply of crude oil (Marland's strength), while Marland Oil needed more marketing outlets (Continental's strength).
The new corporation, based in Ponca City, was named the Continental Oil Company (legend has it that J.P. Morgan, Jr., couldn't wait to do away with the Marland name). It was a reckoning force, owning nearly 3,000 wells and thousands of retail outlets in 30 states.
Conoco was on its way.

As a result of this merger, the Continental Oil Company was born. The old Continental Oil company headquarters were in Denver, Colorado and the Marland headquarters were in New York City. Ponca City,Oklahoma was chosen to be the new company headquarters. The trademark of the new company became the combination of the Marland red triangle logo with the Conoco name attached. This new symbol was used by Conoco from 1929 through the middle 1970’s, when the Conoco's round capsule was adopted. Like so many other oil companies of the time, Conoco grew by expansion and the purchase of other regional companies. During the 1950’s Conoco bought Western Oil of Minneapolis, F.P. Kendall and Company (Kayo) of Chattanooga, and Douglas Oil Company of Los Angeles, California.On September 30, 1981 DuPont acquired 100 percent of Conoco's stock in a transaction worth about $7.4 billion -- the largest merger in U.S. history at the time., Conoco became a wholly owned DuPont subsidiary. On October 22, 1998, Conoco stock began trading again at the New York Stock Exchange, using a new symbol, "COC," honoring the name it had held for so many years - Continental Oil Company.

Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum Company grew and prospered, becoming leaders in the global energy industry. On August 30, 2002, they combined their complementary strengths and shared values to create ConocoPhillips as we know them today.
