Thank you. Sorry about the bad pictures
Can somebody tell me why the mobilgas sign a is not like most mobilgas signs? Most I see don't have the a is gas like mine. Please references pic from above.
Scott,
It’s the entire font, not just the “a”. I believe it’s a date change around 1945 or 46. But I’m no expert.
I’m sure a Mobil expert will be able to help. Here are a few of mine...
My White Stars are 1933, 34 and 35. My Socony is a 46. So I may be comparing apples to oranges, but they definitely make your sign in both versions.

I've watched the IR dating on larger Mobilgas shields for years, and have tried to keep images of all of the different years I come across in my Mobil files.
Steve is pretty darn close from what I've found. In 1946 you will see both versions of the "a" used, the open hook serif A as it's known to Mobil collectors, or the more standard closed A. I believe after 1946 though, only the standard closed A version was used. Previous to 1946, only the serif A was used on pole shields which I've seen dated up to IR40, or 1940. I have personally not seen any shields dated from 1941 to 1945, and my feelings are they were not produced during the war. If anyone has a shield dated during these years, I would like to see a photo of it.

Thank you guys. Now I need the weather to get better and go look at the date on mine. The funny part is I never saw it tell the other day and have looked at it for years lol. I'mwill post the date on mine as soon as Incan get to it. Always leaning. Thanks again Scott
