Here is the start to my Red Indian Gas station I built a few years ago in my double car garage back wall. It was a blank canvas and I got my inspiration from one photo of a Red Indian gas station photograph I found on the internet. Please follow along and I hope you enjoy. Will be adding a lot more pictures of it’s progress. It started with my Wayne 866 rough pump I was very fortunate to buy.

Pump I planned on rough restoring, decided it was going to be Red Indian on one side of the pump and White Flash on the other side of the pump as I had two White Flash porcelain panels already in my collection, and they fit the Wayne 866 or 60 pump perfectly. From the pictures, you can see very bad fading and will require reproduction parts.

Here is a picture of the extra White Flash panel I had to use. It’s in better shape. I have included a picture of a reproduction decal I’m going to use on the pump. I aged it by spraying paint stripper very lightly on it. Last picture I could see under the old red painted panel some lettering and a date.

Pump is starting to come along nicely now. Both sides going to be totally different. I was really pleased after sanding the red panel and finding this name and date under the paint, being careful not to fully remove any lettering or numbers, and with the aged decal added, I was very pleased with the progress.

Now after fitting the panels, it was time to take the pump apart to get ready for the new parts, and tap a lot of the rusty screw threads. Did all the wiring at this point as well for it to light up.

The sight glass I smeared with a little grease to make it look like the old gas had dried up and was dirty. I thought better looking than shiny new glass . Again I’m aging the pump to look old and well used. So now it’s time to work on the back concrete wall to look something similar to this picture I found on the internet.

Next I covered up my visible pump, so not to get any paint on it. I painted that back cinder block wall in the back of my garage a creamy off white color. Going white would be to clean and bright. I taped up a fake window on my solid door to give it that old gas station looking door.

Came up with this modern outdoor pole to use as a station lighter to put beside the Wayne 866 pump. Painted a pile of wood trim to add to my cinder block wall and painted the sides of my steps going to the door in the Red Indian red paint. I’m going to incorporate my Gilbarco air meter into this project somehow.

Painted the door trim black, changed the door handle and lock to black as well. I experimented with a picture of the inside of a general store, had it blown up to window size picture, 2 way taped it to my door and made a wooden frame painted black that i attached over top of it to hopefully give the visual affect of looking through straight into a gas station convenience store. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Visible pump lit up now.

First, thank you for all the kind words. This is a labor of love for me. I’m having a blast building this wall. Things are working in my favour on this project too. At this point I realized to make this look like a gas station, I would need another pump. I was very fortunate to come across a fellow petroliana member selling a rough rusty Wayne 866 close to North Bay, about 4.5 hour drive. Timing was perfect, so here is my new addition. I added Oil and Gas lettering on the wall now. This is not a true showcase 866, someone at sometime added the display opening on one side with hinged door, the other side has a steel panel. I’m still thrilled to have it and will work with it.

More pictures of the new addition. Sheet metal sides are pitted so bad in some areas, you can see right through. A few more Canadian winters outside and this pump might have been a parts pump. It’s a perfect candidate for rough restoring.

Moving on, I decided I wanted light up globes on these pumps. I realize they are globe delete pumps and have no 5 inch, or whatever the size hole in the top. So I figured if I only drill a 3/8 inch hole in the top of them to accommodate the light bulb housing and a couple of 1/4 inch holes to securely mount the globe holder casting, it’s not a major modification. So at this point I decided to order 2 metal globes, 1 Red Indian glass lens, 1 Red Indian Marathon Blue lens and 2 White Flash Lenses for the backs of the pumps and 2 aluminum globe holder castings from Jim’s garage website.

When parts arrived, I had a little problem to deal with, these castings are formed exactly to accommodate a large hole in the center. I wasn’t going to modify my pump to fix, so I had a lot of grinding of the globe holder castings to fit the Wayne 866 curve.

Thanks for joining me on this project I thoroughly enjoyed. Please continue to follow this link as I will soon be adding a Seloil display cabinet and a few more signs. Also I plan to hook up some headlights to that old Essex Super six radiator on the wall.

I disagree, looks great. The whole display is neat. Like the lit headlights.

I picked up this Seloil display cabinet to rough restore into Red Indian to go with my Red Indian gas station inside my garage. Lots of degreasing to do, sand and rough paint. Plan on lighting it up and adding a Red Indian globe. Not original, but I have seen pictures of other people adding a globe to this style of display cabinet.

I figured out how to access the large plastic oil catcher basket in the bottom of the oil rack. It’s cracked, broken and missing pieces, but still cleans up okay. Original to display cabinet as it says Seloil in the plastic.

Started degreasing both sides of the cabinet and sanding parts, so ready for paint.

Attaching a globe holder and all electrical installed in cabinet. Very tricky running the wires for globe lighting and lighting up both sides of can display areas and sliding drawer for oil pouring. Had to be wired in such a way as to opening and closing both oil display doors and not interfering with that operation. Priming globe and globe holder.

Very well done, impressive. Since I have my own oil-can Island merchandiser awaiting resto, I have 3 questions for you;

1. any tips/tricks in getting the correct angles for cutting the globe holder rang, to fit the ANGLED slope of the top? (not applicable to my own unit, since it has a flat top, just for my learning…)
2. how do you achieve the ‘vintage paint’ effect? I don’t mean using a vintage COLOR, but rather vintage EFFECT?
3. Can you tell us HOW you achieved lighting that worked WHILST drawers and sliders open & close? Curious!

Just f.y.I., I plan to put mine on CASTORS; gives it a BIT more height, and then super-easy to wheel around/move. I did this on my Wayne 505 & 605, and now plan to use castors on SEVERAL items, for ease of movement, a cheap solution to significantly improve its no ability, for me, anyway!

Love your mini forecourt!
Chris

So impressed by what your putting together here. I love how this will be jn your garage (and out of the snow) so you can enjoy it at any time. To be honest this reminds me of a Jason Shron out of Aurora who built the VIA car replica in his basement.

The Essex Super Six grille was such a good idea. I dont know what i liked better between the working headlights and the vintage 28 plate. I'm feeling like all you need to top it all off is a vintage highway navigation sign or highway sign (I'm a huge fan of the crown topped kings highway signs the province used to have in the 40/50s).

Hi Chris, the top of my particular Seloil cabinet tapers 10 degrees front and back. I contacted Jim’s Garage (buy my pump parts from) and asked for the closest fit pump globe holder. He suggested the Wayne 60 globe topper would be closest. He was correct, I just had to die grind the inner ring a little to accommodate fit within 1/8 inch. I added a home made gasket and that was close enough for me. Question 2, As the cabinet was already brown, I simply sanded it to remove finger dirt. The globe and holder I sprayed (Krylon spray can) brown primer. Then I simply brushed using a good exterior red paint, one coat, very fine to let some streaks of brown to show through, criss crossing strokes with the brush to give a rough, worn paint effect. Trick, before it fully cure dries, I spray can paint stripper on just some areas to lightly bubble and look like wear. If it bubbles to much, you can tamp it with a rag or paper towel to stop and flatten the bubbling. Will get back to you on the wiring, need to take some pictures.

Hi Chris, wiring a little tricky to explain. I will show you what I purchased from Amazon (choose warm white). I used a power bar inside cabinet.Top globe I used a wire with it’s own plug, easier to remove top and just plug in. Ran light pucks from either side starting from top inside cabinet, tie wrapped down the back of one aluminum rods, down through a drain hole by base of cans, then up to power bar.Ty wrap excess wiring so not to interfere with removal of oil catch basin. Used third light puck just under power bar to light across the spout drawer opening, it just lights up that area a bit too. Not really needed, but had a third light puck to use. The remote and holder I just stuck on the underside of the aluminum roller door, first section, sideways, so it will roll up with the roll door.

Good thinking, I will look out for some Kings Hwy signs the next time I go to Aberfoyle market...

Many thanks, for BOTH replies; that gives me a lot to go on, appreciated!

Side-bar question for ALL; re-reading my original post to Mccoll64, I see another 2 grammatical/syntax errors, but cannot re-find the EDIT button, after earlier doing an edit?

Thanks
Chris

The "Edit" button disappears after 10 hours from posting the message. It is hoped that any errors are noticed and revised within that time period. Before we had that restriction, we found that a few trouble makers would edit posts after a number of replies had been posted with the intent to change the content and make the replies look foolish or conflicting.

If you have an edit that really needs to be corrected, send me a PM message or email with a link to the post and an explanation of the correction.
