Hi Everyone!

Tonight is the official start of Globe of the Month. If you did not already know there have been a few minor changes. Aaron and myself are the new hosts and we will be switching to a bi-monthly format. We have been collecting globes and pictures of globes for over 20 years. With everyones help we feel we can keep the post fresh for two months.

The topic for January/February is going to be "your first globe". Obviously this is a topic that anyone with one globe or more can contribute to! One of the things we would like to see is more people involved in the topic. If you no longer have your first globe then post a picture of the globe that you have owned the longest. If possible post a picture of yourself with your globe, that way we can put some faces with the names we see here. Hopefully that part of the feature won't scare to many people off!

If you want you can post a few sentences about what led you to make that first purchase. Every collection out there, no matter how large started with first purchase. Lets have some fun with this!

Thanks for your participation!

My first globe purchase was way back in 1984. I had been collecting Michigan license plates for several years and had also picked up several pump plates that looked good with the license plates. In my search for license plates I met well known pump and globe dealer Walt Feiger from Traverse City, Michigan. Walt always had some pumps and globes for sale along with license plates and I got thinking "How cool would it be to have an old pump with a globe in front of my garage"?

My wife and I also collected general antiques and country store items so we went to antique shops on a regualar basis. One day we were down in central Illinois at a shop and the guy must have had at least 15 globes for sale. Unbelievable to see that many globes for sale in one place back in that day! The one that struck me the most was a Sinclair HC with one lense on a glass body. When I grew up there was a Sinclair station just down the road from my house and I just had to have ithat globe. I paid the significant sum of $80 for it, which was all the money at that time. That one purchase led to another globe purchase a few months later and a third one a year later and I have been collecting ever since! I did eventually get a pump for my garage but since that day globes have been my main focus!

Some of the best friends I have today I have met through the Petroliana hobby. Its been lots of fun and we are looking forward to seeing your globes and hearing your stories!

Thanks!

Lonnie & Aaron

This is Lonnie with the HC globe. Aaron will post a photo of his first globe later.

Here is a Picture of me and my first Origianal globe, I have always bought reproduction globes for my Gas Pumps. But I wanted to do one in Imperial Refineries because there was a Imperial Refineries station here in my Hometown of Janesville, Minnesota that still pumped gas until this past June then went out of Business do to a HWY Bypass. The sign you see behind me used to be the stations sign. I got ahold of the guy that owned the station and ask if he would sell it he said sure but I would have to take it down. I told him no problem then he told me he still owned another old station that was shut down and I could have that sign for the same deal as the other one so I ended up with 2 of these on 15' poles they were 2 sided with a porcelain can. I took one apart and hung one side in My Garage and My dad took the other side for his Garage, The other sign is complete and a buddy of mine is going to put the pole and sign up in his yard with a gas station display. So anyway Back to the Globe. I wanted a Pump to match the sign and couldn't locate a reproduction globe for this company so I started to look around, then I found one and Bought it about a Month ago from Lonnie Hop. Since then I have bought 2 other Imperial Refineries globes Ethyl and a No Lead. I allways liked Gas Pumps and Oil Cans but I think I am Getting hooked on Globes now also. Have a good Day Everybody, Jason.

My very first globe purchase was actually a threesome. I went to the grand opening of the Brass Armadillo antique mall in 1998 in the Kansas City area and found the Phillips 66 shields $200 for the pair and a Sinclair Dino Supreme for $125. I don't have a picture of me holding the globes but here is a picture of me and my wife Janet.

I agree with you Lonnie, some of my very best friends I have met in the hobby. Part of the fun for me is going to the shows is to chat with the guys I have met through this website or at the shows including your son Aaron.

My first gas pump had a colorful Skelly ad glass on it. It came from a Catholic Convent farm here in Missouri. I get a kick out of picturing nuns filling up the tractor with it. Anyway, I saw a Skelly globe with the same design for sale at the Shell Wood River Refinery History Museum swap meet years ago. I had to have it to match that ad glass, right?

My plans to restore the pump haven't materialized yet, but I enjoy seeing it every time I go in or out of the driveway.

Come on and take those pictures with your globes. Let's see 'em and hear your stories.

My first globe was a 3fer.I traded a bunch of beer knob tap handles for these 3 globes:

Single lens on glass body

NOS lenses on repro capco

Lenses on original capco

Unfortunately I do not have any of the globes anymore
I wish I still did but when I got these I was more interested in cash than globes, my how times change now I want the globes back!I have since gotten another HC globe but No pemco or Kanotex maybe someday I will.

Here's the first globes I bought & still own & will never sell. The socony was technically first.I aquired it from Rex thru his auction.

I had to think which one was my first. I had to go and look it up and i was this Skychief. It is N.O.S. and i bought it to display on my shelf. Few years back i decided to sell the repop globe and disply it on my pump. I ended up buying another single lens and a Texaco also from the same guy a few days later.

I got interested in globes after I discovered Old Gas. I went to the site to learn how to restore a Tok 300 that came with my property. I wound up buying Jack's book and the Benjamin books because I thought some of the globes I saw were works of art. I am convinced they are a real piece of Americana art that should be preserved.
I studied the prices on ebay, here and other auctions and bought this White Flash globe because I could afford it and I liked it. This was about a year ago and I have bought one other globe. I look everyday for my next one. I would have a awesome collection if only I was a Rockefeller!

about 12 years ago I recieved a call from a guy who "had heard" that I collected GULF, he would not tell me who told him, he said he had 2 lenses that said Gulf Marine White, I told him I was interested, He said he was in NEW YORK and I would have to come pick them up, he wanted $450.00. I thought about it for a couple weeks and called him back to see if he would take less, NO WAY he said. I decided to bite the bullet and make the trip to buy the 2 lenses. After a 3 hour ride I arrived and immediatly saw 2 COMPLETE MARINE WHITE GLOBES, I asked about the 2nd one and he replied I TOLD YOU I HAD 2 LENSES, (his 2 lenses was actually 2 complete NOS globes), Yes the price was still $450.00 for the 2 globes, Sadly they are both gone, I immediatly sold one for the $450.00, the 2nd went around 8 years ago when I sold my entire GULF collection to Rich Gannon, at the time the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. Now I do not own a single globe, Just tons of signs and 18 pumps

I KNOW SOME OF YOU WILL REMEMBER THIS STORY, BUT IN A NUTSHELL FOR THE NEW GUYS AND GALS:

A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME ABOUT HIS UNCLE HAVING AN OLD GAS GLOBE ABOUT 4 YEARS BEFORE I ACTUALLY PURCHASED IT. I HOOKED UP WITH HIS UNCLE UP THE ROAD FROM ME AND RAY (THE UNCLE) SHOWED ME THIS REALLY NICE GLOBE AT WHICH TIME I KNEW OF NO VALUE. HE KEPT SAYING THROW SOMETHING AT ME SINCE I PAID ONLY $2 FOR IT WAY BACK IN 1971! I THINK I OFFERED A COUPLE HUNDRED FOR IT BUT HE DIDN'T SEEM TOO MOVED. I KEPT BUMPING INTO THE GUY IN TOWN FROM TIME TO TIME AND KEPT BRINGING UP THE GLOBE SUBJECT AND ADDING TEN OR TWENTY DOLLARS TO MY OFFER, BUT GOT NOWHERE REALLY. THEN AROUND THE TIME THAT I BOUGHT THE GLOBE FROM HIM (OR JUST BEFORE), I OFFERED A GOOD SOLID PRICE WHICH RAISED HIS BROW!
I LOOKED AT IT AGAIN, WE SETTLED ON THE PRICE THAT I OFFERED AND GAVE A SHAKE OF HANDS. THIS WOULD BE MY FIRST GLOBE:

RAY ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT CAME FROM A LOCAL STATION/REPAIR SHOP A TOWN OVER THAT WAS BOUGHT UP IN THE LATE 40'S AND CONVERTED INTO A ROADSIDE EATERY WHICH TO THIS DAY HAS GROWN AND IS STILL IN BUSINESS! THE OWNERS OF THE MODERN SNACK BAR STILL HAVE ONE OF THE 6' D/S PORC SIGNS LOCATED IN THE FAMILIES BASEMENT GAMEROOM!

I'm not sure this is the first but it's the one I still have that I have owned the longest. I bought this globe along with a Kanotex on glass from an antique mall in Albuquerque, NM in about 1988. I think I paid about $175-$200 for each one.

Here is a picture of my first globe, a Sinclair Dino Supreme. I believe it was used on pumps from about 1962 to 1970. I got it at Iowa Gas a few years ago from a father and his son that had a nice display of globes for sale. I was just starting to collect Sinclair signs and was having trouble forking over the money for the stuff as I was not a rich GI. My dad and brother both have several nice globes and I liked the way the looked lit up. So I picked out the one I wanted and Lonnie even cut me a break on the price and I had my first globe. I also split a Sinclair Power X globe with my brother on that trip, I got the body and one lens, he got the second lens to complete a globe he already had. I now have about 10 original globes and one repo Sinclair aircraft globe that came with a pump I bought and one fantasy Corvette globe. I still like metal signs as I am afraid I will Jarvis something made of glass some day.

Here is my first globe I got 20 years ago. The lenses were sitting in a box at an antique mall and marked $30.00 for the pair. I had to think about that one. I knew about Hy-Flash gas stations because I used to stop at them in the early seventies. After I bought the pair, I put them away because I did not have a body for them. Ten years later I found a body for them and decided to mount them in. That started my interest in Hy-Flash Gas/Miller Oil from Toledo, Ohio. I have finding old pictures of stations and been working on finding the locations of them. If anybody has any pictures of Hy-Flash/Miller Oil stations in Ohio and Michigan' Let me know maybe I could get a copy of them. I’m also working on a small history of the company.

My second was Hi-Speed Gas....next time. I think I like the letter H or something!!!

Don't remember the first one, but about 15 years ago I bought a SkyTrak from a great guy, Dave, in NJ. Never really liked globes because of breakage paranoia, but I liked it because it was from a local Wayne NJ company that had a few local stations and provided fuel for the local airfields.
Lonnie, please add "the rest of the story" about this find of SkyTraks.
Posted By: olddutchgas Re: Globe of the Month starts - Your first globe - Tue Jan 29 2008 03:52 PM
Thanks MetroPetro for reminding me of the "Skytrak" event. Dave (I can't remember his last name) kept one of the Skytrack globes with the plane and I assume that is the one you got from him.

As Paul Harvey says "and now the rest of the story." It will be 18 years ago this February that I got a call from a guy in New Jersey with some globes for sale. I had been running an ad in CTO! Magazine looking for Dixie globes and he called in response to that ad. The only thing was that I was one of those collectors that never sold anything and was only looking for globes for my collection. The thought of buying a whole load of globes was a little overwhelming. He had at least 25 complete globes, with many of them being duplicates. He had a few Flying A, a few different Crown Oil & Gas and several Skytrak globes with the little airplane on it as well as dozens of miscellaneous lenses and 50 sets of Skytrak lenses with just the word and no plane. He wanted $3000 for the whole group (remember this was 18 years ago) but they had to be picked up in New Jersey. My head was spinning just a little, I had never intended to be a globe dealer but as I looked at the numbers I said to myself "Hey, if I sell off most of the stuff I can add several globes to my collection for free for the effort."

I committed to buying the group and a few weeks later (after borrowing the money and assuring my wife I knew what I was doing!)I started out early in the morning for the 710 mile drive to the guys place. When I got there he showed me the globes, they were in the back of his paint shop and they were packed in newspaper from 1964. They had 26 years worth of dust but it was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me in the globe hobby. Dave had got them out of a local bulk plant a number of years before and was always going to do something with globes but had just never got around to it. One day he decided he could make beter use of the space for something else and made the decision to sell. Dave was a super nice guy and we chatted awhile, then I paid him and loaded the stuff up for the long drive home.

It took a couple of years to sell off the duplicate items but one thing I learned is that it is fun to set up and sell at shows! The only globe I have left today from the group is one of the Skytrak globes with the plane and I will probably always keep it just for the memory.

Here is the lesson I learned back then that I am going to share with some of the newer collectors. As you gain knowledge don't be afraid to buy duplicate things or items that are reasonably priced. It costs very little to set up at a gas show and it is a great way to finance your collection/addiction! Selling is also a great way to meet other collectors and to build the network of people out there that will call you when they have something for sale.

As I have said in the past, the vast majority of collectors are super nice people and there is a huge group of new friends out there in this hobby that are just waiting to be met. Hope everyone is having a great day!

Thanks!

Lonnie

Thanks Lonnie & Aaron for hosting the OTM, this is and will be a fun one.
Great stories and pictures so far, keep on posting!

Here is my first globe. A customer/friend gave it to me nos along with my first pump, the short 39 it's on which I had "spiffed up" to go with. Only have one other original globe, an American from the same guy, plus a few lenses and a repop Harley. Globes scare me actually as I watch the guys I went to college with in my petro area with pool sticks and beer bottles and flying cue balls and the Wii...

- is the freaking lens in there crooked?? Blast never noticed that before.

This isn't my first globe , it's my second and oldest. my first was a capco dino. I bought this globe around 1990. the guy had it in the bed of his truck at a swap meet. I asked how much and could I get a better look at it and he dropped it on the pavement. the thing exploded and the lenses rolled around like when you would spin a coin and laid down undamaged. I stood there in shock. Needless to say he was pi;;ed off and I bought it for pennies on the dollar by todays prices. By the way I'm 52 yrs. old;;;;;;;18 on viagra'''''''''Ron

Here is a picture of my first globe. I bought an entire building of pumps and parts from an old oil jobber. The building was in bad shape, the roof had several leaks and kids had broken in over the years and broken several old globes. This old VS globe was the only one I found, it was still in its original, half moth eaten box from 1949.

I bought this globe from a store called "The Gas Pump" in Riverside, CA about 1985. In spite of working for Union Oil, I had always liked the Shell logo. My wife's grandfather had been an oilman, so buying this was not a problem. I didn't get my second globe for about 15 years. My 50th was just delivered last week. My kids think I'm crazy, but my wife still likes them ---- she just wants them displayed a little better than they are now.

The story of my first globe starts with my first sign discovery. I have been collecting for about 6 months now, and am concentrating on Mobil items. My brother works as a delivery man for a local oil distributer. I had asked him to "keep an eye out" for old gas signs and collectibles, since he has the opportunity to visit lots of old farms delivering fuel. He called me a couple weeks later and explained he had found an old Red Crown thermometer in this guys barn, and he was interested in selling it. I wasn't too thrilled at first, thinking this was some little dinky 10" give-away thermometer. He said, NO, this is porcelain and it's about 6 feet tall! He wants $300 for it and that's the least he'll take. You bet I was in the car that evening and it was in my house that night! I was new to this but not dumb! I couldn't believe the sign after it was cleaned up. It still works fine, and has day one gloss and shine after my soft scrub bath. My brother was telling his Boss about the find when his Dad who used to own the company said, I've got an old Red Crown globe out in my barn, he's welcomed to have it if he wants it! SO, my long story long, I had an instant Red Crown collection within 3 days! I have since added a Mobilgas and a Metro globe to my collection. Not much, but I'm just starting. You would think the days of finding this stuff cheap or for FREE are gone, but it's still out there folks. Happy hunting.

If you've ever seen Randy Souders artwork, you'll notice this globe in several of his paintings. I purchased it from him a few years back and it was my first "real" globe.

Posted By: 59fairlane Re: Globe of the Month starts - Your first globe - Mon Feb 04 2008 10:15 PM
This my first globe!!! Not that I have many. This is my only complete original. I have a set of original 15" lenses i need to get a body for. I have a couple repops. This is 16 or 16.5 inch. I think it's on a low profile metal body. Two lenses, completely original.

Anyway my dad gave it to me for Christmas maybe 5 years ago. He was doing some painting work for a man that used to be a Mobil Bulk dealer and he had this in his garage. He traded some labor from the job for it. He had more, but sadly it's all gone. But I have this, and it was a gift from my dad!!!

Back in 2000 I was reading Check The Oil and I came across Lonnie Hop's Top O' The Pump. He was doing a project called globes on a budget, where he set aside $25 a week to buy 25-30 entry level globes averaging about $130. Up untill this time I figured globes where to expensive for me. I decided to give it a try and pickup 10 or so globes. So the madness began. My first buy was this single lens Cities. Last count was over 200 globes or single lenses, with average cost at $121. So Lonnie all this madness is your fault. Richard

Thans to Mick(oldnfuelish) for posting the pic. This Pioneer High was purchased with absolutely no knowledge of globes. I had been recently looking at an old Corvair for parts and in the barn was the shell of an old gas pump. I thought it would look cool with my old cars so a deal was made for both. As beginners luck struck I found out it sas a Tokheim 850. Al;l I knew was that it was very heavy. While visiting an antuque mall shortly after that, I spotted this globe and just had to have it. It sat in my bedroom for a while and then I thought another would be nice and you know the rest of the story. That was over 15 yrs ago and now I have somehow aquired somewhat over 120 of these beauties. Some common, some rare but all loved. I don't have much more room to display so now to get a new one, I sell one or trade one of the others. Can't stand to have them packed in boxes but I am still looking.

Richard;

I am not going to apoligize for getting you started in the globe hobby! I know that it is addictive, but it is also loads of fun! You don't need a lot of high priced globes to make a great collection. If you have 200 items of any type of collectible it will be pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing your story. I know there are many other Oldgas members out there with globes. We have several weeks left on this feature, why not take a few minutes and share your first globe with the rest of us. Thanks!

My first globe was this Economy, of which I've only seen one other to date. I'm not sure what company it came from, but it is possible that it's from Carl Bolch Oil Co. of St. Louis.

I got it at the Iola swap meet in 2005. At that swap meet, I knew I wanted to buy a globe, and made the choice between this one and a gold crown.

Shot with KODAK DC3200 DIGITAL CAMERA at 2008-02-09

I started working for a Marathon jobber in the late 1960's. During the slow times in the 1970's I would get the job of dismantling a closed bulk plant. Bringing back the dock pumps, loading arms, meters, registers and etc. Also loading up the dumpster with warehouse trash. So my first globe comes from one of those salvage jobs.
I had my wife take a couple pictures of me holding the globe but they didn't turn out. She said it was something to do with the subject matter??

This is a shot of my first globe, which is also my favorite.
I stopped at an old bait shot about 6 miles from my house, which I knew had been a filling station for many years. Since I do not fish all I really wanted was a six pack of Old Milwaukee. On a hunch, I asked the owner if he had ever checked out the crawl space attic for any gas stuff. Sure enough he had. He dug through the back room, and showed me this Bonded, globe. He had broken one of the ad. glasses getting it out. however all the pieces were there. He said if it was not broken he would need $100.00 for it, but I could have it for $50.00. so I glued all the pieces together and keep that side to the wall, and it displays very well.I still look for globes from the smaller companies and have found a few, but this was my first. Norm.

Looking good so far, lotsa good stories! We have two more weeks left on this topic and I know there are many oldgas members out there that have at least one globe. Please take a few minutes and share them! Aaron is out of town but will be posting his first globe next week and telling you his story. Hi Everyone!

As many of you know there is an ongoing debate on one of the other oldgas forums about the "borrowing" of images that are posted on the oldgas site. I am going to take a moment here to ask that anyone looking at the globe of the month posts to please respect the images that are used and not use them without permission to make reproductions. Obviuosly anyone who does this hurts the site and the hobby.

You will NEVER hear me bashing or finding fault with anyone on this site and I ask for the same consideration from anyone who adds to my posts. Lets not let the fraction of 1% of the people ruin our fun.

I will continue to post photos and quite honestly will post phtotos in the coming months of globes that many of you have never seen before. I ask and encourage others to do the same and lets not get caught up in the petty things that some people like to do.

So please take moment and post a photo of your first globe. If anyone has anything positive to contribute to this post, please do. If you have anything negative to say, please start you own post. Thanks and lets enjoy this great hobby!

Lonnie

Jack, I believe Lonnie had a Champlin globe for sale at the show in Columbia MO in January.

It all started at birth really, when my dad dragged me to my first flea market at 5 weeks of age (I blame him for my addiction to this gas and oil stuff). A year or so later I uttered my first word of "Dino" (honest to goodness truth, most normal babies would say "mamma" or "dadda", apparently I'm not normal). My first globe didn't roll around until some time after that, when I was a few days shy of my third birthday in 1988. One afternoon my dad and I went for a ride up to Traverse City, MI to visit friend and globe/pump dealer Walt Feiger to pick a five gallon Fry Mae West my dad had bought over the phone. Walt always had nice selection of globes and when we arrived and had loaded the pump we went into his house to see what he had for sale. Walt had just recently picked up two sets lenses, a pair of Kanotex Aviation lenses in the original wooden shipping crate for the tidy sum of $800 (things have changed a little bit since then price wise...). The other pair of lenses Walt had were this pair of Buffalo Gasoline lenses that he put on a screw base glass body and was asking $450. My dad was leaning towards the Kanotex Aviation lenses, but only as a three year old can I said "No, no, we need the Buffalo!" My dad (being the cool guy that he was) relented and purchased the Buffalo globe. Needless to say I was quite geeked out over the purchase of the globe on our three hour ride home to Holland, MI. Upon arriving home I ran into the house and hollered "Mom, Mom, I got a Buffalo globe!" I'm sure she rolled her eyes and said "thats nice" as mothers (or wives) sometimes do when their men arrive home with that cool new purchase. In my three year old mind that Buffalo globe became my globe and has always been my globe and always will be my globe, even if I didn't pay for it then. I loved this globe as child and it is still one of my favorites to this day, 19 years later.

As my dad and I thought about this months feature we both reflected on the memories and the friendships that we have built over the last couple decades that would not have otherwise have happened if it were not for these silly globes. Growing up I really do not know any differently then going to shows, antique malls, flea markets, etc... and the people along the way ultimately have made this hobby the great thing that it is. Many familiar faces at the shows over the years can recall a story or two of me growing up running around with a globe or an oil can and have watched me grow up with this stuff and I in turn have watched their hairs gray as they too have gotten older. I encourage any of you out there to get your kids involved in this amazing hobby, because we need some new young blood in the ranks and I can honestly say you won't regret it.

I know there are more of you out there with stories to tell and pictures to share, so please do!

Years ago when I was collecting mostly Soda Pop I was at a Brinkman auction in Minneapolis when this cool globe came up for bid, something told me that I had to have it. That was the end of Soda Pop and beginning of Oil/Gas, I am still a freak about Midwest Oil stuff and anything from North Dakota and always will be!! To me, there is nothing better that the thrill of the chase.

Back in 1997 my wife and I were living in Texas, and as we often did back then we traveled to high school football games in support of our local team. We were doing just that in early December, traveling from Dallas west on interstate 20 toward Midland, when we exited to fill up with gas. As we headed back up the interstate entrance ramp, my wife shouted "Richard, STOP the car". I pulled over as quick as I could, wondering if she was ill or maybe just off her meds again. She pointed and said "Look over there in the ditch....see that shiny glass object in the weeds"? I finally saw what she was pointing at, so we both got out and headed toward the ditch. What we found was the globe pictured below. It was dusty and half covered with weed, but otherwise in excellent condition. At that time I had been collecting signs and cans for over ten years, but hadn't really been interested in globes. But I told my later that evening "if finding nice globes is going to be this easy, I think I'll start collecting them!!!" Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Now I know what you're thinkin'.......... "Nooooooo Waaaay.....that's the biggest bunch of BS I've ever heard!!!" Well.....you're right, but it sounds so much better than the truth, which is I got the globe off eBay.

Richard

Only have 5 globes but this was my first- Had only been collecting a few years when I heard of a lady selling off some of her husbands collection- about 1992-Went with my son - bought a few hundred dollars of cans - few signs etc- This globe was on a Fry Visable pump- I asked just offhand what she wanted for pump and globe- She said a lot of money- didnt know exactly what she thought a lot of money was-we kept on looking at other stuff- She said she wanted to remodel her kitchen- I asked what a lot of Money was- reply was that she would not take a cent less than 1000.00 for pump and Globe- took about a nano- second to decide- Didnt want to see too interested so we looked it over for a while and said OK- She was happy as all get out- The real mistake of the day was not taking a wooden curbside gas station with doors etc- era 1900- I had no idea till years later what it was-thanks Don

Here is one for the repro guys to do. My first globe was a Oriental Regular. This one is actually an upgrade from the first one that had some water damage. The story on how I got it is about as exciting as the globe itself. A friend bought it at an auction. I traded a few good oil cans for it. I was just happy to have a globe!

Hi Everyone!

Looks like this installment of globe of the month is winding down. I was at friends house a few days ago and took a picture of him with his first globe and will post that tonight. There is still plenty of time to post a phtoto of your first globe if you have not already done so. The next globe of the month will start the first week of March. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

One rainy fall evening around 1964 my Dad pulled the family station wagon up to the pumps at the Conoco station in Bradley,IL. As the attendant pumped the gas and checked the oil I remember sitting there looking up at the globes that were illuminated on top of the pumps. Thats my earliest reccolection of gas pump globes. I was probably 5 years old.
In 1978 my Dad and I built a new house for the eccentric old guy that had owned the Conoco station I remembered from my childhood. Our customer owned the property next to the new house we were building. His late wife had given music lessons in the house. CB had a garage built to look like a barn behind the house. There was a covered patio next to the barn. We would often sit on that patio at lunch time and listen to our customer tell about his experiences running his White Rose and later Conoco stations. In 1982 CB hired us to paint the house next to the one we had built a few years earlier. He told me he had some turpintine or thinner in the loft of his barn that I could use to clean my brushes. I went up there to get the thinner and saw four Conoco globes sitting there. Three had green plastic bodies, and the Ethyl globe had a red plastic body. I asked CB if he'd sell me one. He wasn't about to sell any but he told me he had gotten them in 1933 when he rebranded his station from White Rose to Conoco. He went on to tell me how fragile they were. The next few days I made a nuisance of myself asking CB if he was sure he didn't want to sell me a globe. The answer was always no. The last afternoon I was on the job I was painting the 2nd story overhang when I heard CB hollering that he needed to talk to me. As I was coming down the ladder I could see CB coming up the walk trying to hide a globe. I think I must have jumped rather than climb down the ladder. CB handed the globe to me and said "its yours".
Yes, my first globe is also the first globe I have ever seen.
It was several years before I was able to get another globe. A couple years after I got my 2nd globe CB passed away. I got the Conoco Ethyl globe at his estate auction.
My first globe is currently packed away but I still have it.
Sorry for the poor quality of the picture.

My 1st globe, complete pump & broken cylinder all happened in July 1978. I bought this pump from Bruce Davis [Kyle Moore's uncle], he had it in an antique shop in Gotebo, OK. for $450. Not knowing how to package the cylinder, I broke a large horse shoe shaped chunk out of it [it already had a couple of BB holes].
I traded the BELL globe back to him the next year after buying another stovepipe RUSH. Bruce took me to Kyle's that year & I was speechless. WOW ! Approx. 80 restored visibles, all different makes & company branded, plus a wall [floor to ceiling & wall to wall]of 1pc. globes. Also had stacks of globe lenses & bodies all over the floor.

Looking good!

I enjoy the stories as much as the globes! Great story Bob. Dick, until I saw the picture I didn't realize you were so young! It is interesting how a random event can lead to a lifelong passion for collecting a particular item!

A little while ago I was at Scott Benjamin's house and we got talking about first globe's and I took a photo of him with his first one. Scott is a household name to most collectors. He has co-authored numerous books and publishes Petroleum Collectibles Magazine.

Scott is a full time globe dealer and has owned thousands of globes over the years including some of the rarest and best. Yet his story starts simply over 34 years ago. He had been to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. with his parents had seen a full size gas station on display there. Scott though it was the neatest thing he had ever seen, especilly the visible pumps. He started watching the local For Sale paper and one week he saw an ad for a visible pump a guy had for sale. He went and looked at the pump and a deal was made on the pump. After the transaction the guy said "Let me get the globe for you". The guy had a barn full of boxes and junk and it took a better part of an hour to find the globe. It turned out to be a Texaco on a screw base body and the lenses were in poor condition. The guy handed him the globe as carefully as a new born baby and told Scott "Be very carefull with this, if you break it you will never find another one".

A few weeks went by and Scott had his pump home and he started thinking, "I had better see if I can find another globe in case the one I have ever gets broken". This was back in the 70s when you could still find globes on pumps in Northern Ohio. Well, as we all know that faded Texaco globe led to a liftime of globe collecting for him!

The moral of this story and the reason I am sharing it here is - If you are young, (or not so young), even if you can only afford inexpensive globes, it is still possible with time, ambition, and upgrading to build an impressive collection of anything!

Thanks for all you contributions to Globe of the Month and there is still plenty of time to share your story!

Lonnie

Hi. My first globe is a one-piece Shell. I got it almost 30 years ago. I needed a globe for my first pump and sought out a collector. The Shell was just one among many great globes he owned. He suggested I buy one of his 15" globes. I remember one was a Rainbow. It was a couple hundred dollars more than the Shell but I thought the Shell was better so I passed on it. (Hindsight is always 20/20.) I have many globes more desirable than the Shell, but there's nothing like your first globe, so I give it a place of honor.

So I stumbled upon this thread and thought it might be worth resuscitation some 13 years later. We have a lot of members who joined since that last post, me included. So here is my first. I wasn't going to get into globes. They were a bit too high end for me but soon found them to be easy to clean, display and when lit up they are really a great piece of advertising artwork. So I wanted something local to where I grew up in Winnipeg MB. And this is what Minuteman sold me, it was in fine form no cleaning required as good as new. And was from a local company whose refinery was just down the road from where we once lived. Perfect start. Just one fault it was one lens. 5 years later I found the other side for the whole globe. Well I am into it now with 35 globes including repops of impossible to get original globes. They are like all things petrolania, they are very addictive
