I'm a member of the HAMB and they have a thread that is called Vintage shots from days gone by! A few pics are oil and gas related. You can loose many hours looking at all the pics. It has over 2.7 million views. Here's a few pics. If these pics have been posted before I'm truly sorry.

Nice pic's.
Firestone Service Center w/ Wayne 50 showcases & Erie 753's selling Texaco Fire-Chief & Ethyl.
16.5" Atlantic globes on 5gal Fry 17's
I just seen those. I check every few days. There are over 1030 pages.
Same here check every other day. Great stuff!
Love the old photos! Keep'em come'in!!!!!
Anyone have a link please.
Thanks
Cool pics
What kinda pumps are these now?

WOW!!!!Thanks for the link....
They look like Gilbarco 804s to me.
I have been following that thread for the last few months,it's very addicting and time consuming!!
Joe
Very cool and I can see where you would lose hours looking through them!

That Texaco Fire Chief Ethyl sign is a nice piece.
What kinda pumps are these now?
Tokheim Vanguard.
I'd like to have one
Not that old but just a little different
Larry
The H.A.M.B. is neat
Great pictures! I wonder what the 6/98 banners mean on the Texaco pumps?
Jamie
Pricer on pump says 18.2, but canvas banner has 6gal for 98c = 16 3/10 gal
Gas on sale at 11.2 cents and TAX at 4 cents per gallon...isn't that like 35% tax on gas, as bad as todays tax on gas
An old 6 foot Ford V-8 sign with not a car in sight.
One of the greatest sites I've been too. You can sit for hours going thur this and find signs you never seen before. Another plus, there's no one selling fake aircraft signs.... : )
Chad, Your the Tydol collector... you need that blimp in your collection! He,He,He
Would like to have a minature blimp like that. Its bigger than my house! Ill settle for a Tydol globe or 2,3,4.........Chad
More

In the truck stop, is that neon in the canopy bases?
Good times

Hey it's free parking when you buy 10 gallons of gas!
You got good eyes..your right..as many cars that are there he might be out of gas
Dalmatians in car are looking at GILMORE FIELD!

John

Home to the Hollywood Stars of the old PCL.
Shawn, it looks you have a new item to chase for the collection. lol
I've seen this on the HAMB, absolutely great thread! I agree i can sit here for hours looking! I wish i could have lived in the era!
Four stations on a corner..your lucky to find one now
Thanks for the great pics. What are those big, round Cities Service pumps?
John
does anyone know? they have a great look
The Cities Service pumps are Bennett 700 series.
Now we need to post pics of that globe to tease you with Shawn
My luck you or Jarvis would find the globe and hold it your collections just to jack with me.lol man I love this hobby there is just so much love
WOW! THAT IS A REALLY COOL ART DECO GULF STATION. WOULD LIKE TO SEE OTHER VIEWS OF THAT ONE!
I aim to please!

Wow Kenny you do aim to please, that has truly got to be an icon in gas station architecture. after 27 years of collecting, i've never seen that one before! any knowledge of where it was located and if there were others? looks to be south of the border! (US southern states?)thanks!
The funky Phillips 66 station on the first page of this forum(not HAMB) was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
That Tydol blimp rocks. How long did it take to paint that monstrosity?
The Fire Chief Ethyl sign. Anyone have a closer pic of it?
it looks like part sign part decal in the pic.
This had become an awesome thread to look through. Modern day had nothing on yesteryear. Truely a spectacle.
Sorry I have no knowledge of the pics but it is very cool!
hmmmmmm.

The Lighthouse Gulf station was built in 1938 in Miami Beach.
Here is a link to a site that has a little more info;
http://www.agilitynut.com/gas/fldeco.html
Shame such creative architecture is taken for granted and doesn't exist anymore!
Hi,

Fantastic pics Guido! Keep them coming!
Guido,
Thanks for sharing!
What is that vehicle in your first pic?
Does the second pic mean that the station was accepting Austrailian pounds and Americal dollars? Was it just during that era? I am assuming that a station like that would now just accept Austrailian dollars.
BTW Austrailian currency is beautiful! Tho I guess any currency if you have enough of it is beautiful... : )
WOW! Those Cities Service Stations & Signs are on Steroids! LOL!
I posted this in another thread a while back...
Could you have a better name for a company? I think not! Thanks for posting!
Try to find a Pegasus like that. Flat and curved!
Can anyone "more from the era

" tell my why the car in the Mobil station pic has a full tarp or covering on it? That's one heck of a stone guard, lol.
I think the Hillsdale Mobil station had the same "curved" Pegasus on it from the one pic I've been able to find of it. You can barely see the front end in my photo, but it looks like it curved as well. Do you think they took the flat version with back bracket mounts, and since the curve is so slight on the building that they were just able to mount them and it didn't crack the porcelain? I would guess with a larger sign there is a bit of bend in the sign due to the size? I've never seen a curved one but I haven't seen it all.
Darin
Darin, mostlikely, it was a "Test - Mule " from Detroit . Back in the Day, General Motors and Ford and too many times Chrysler would wrap a car in canvas so as to discuise the Sheet metal from the competition . I remember here in Richmond Va. , Chrysler had a couple of Test - Mules here .I think it was around 1961. I had somewhat of an inside as I knew the owners of both a Chevrolet dealership and a Plymouth dealer too. Ed Shaver
They still do that today, even at their own test tracks.
disguised Ferrari
As a driver, it is one thing to see photos of a "test mule" on a test track, owned by a Major Car Company. But can you imagine driving down the highway and either being passed or passing a car all draped in canvas or cloth? (and being startled to the point of almost losing control) The curiosity of what is/was underneath the tarp would drive me crazy,............... okay crazier.
Thanks for the info Ed. I didn't even think about that as the reason.
Darin
The car that's covered is a late 50s Lincoln.
Is that last one foreign? Looks like the St. Louis arch and the pumps look domestic.
I don't know if it is or not! They must not get alot of snow is all i know!!! Anyone ever hear of DEA?
I'm told that gasoline brand is sold in Ireland . As to where the station was , I haven't a clue. I'm also a H. A. M. B. member too. Ed Shaver
IMO it is a German brand (could have sold elseware I suppose), I have a link to a gas pump site in Germany and the DEA is spelled out Deutche Erdöl AG, wich means something like "German Earth Oil LTD".
Please check
www.alte-tanksaeulen.de and you will find many nice pictures of Gilbarco-Schwelm pumps restored to DEA brand - and also lots of other nice pumps :-)
br
Claes
Very cool Claes, seems the European community can be just as "obsessed" with the hobby as we North American's!!
Anyone know if that 5th pic down from the top of this page 6 is from NYC? I swear it looks like where I park when I go into Manhattan 31st and Broadway!
That Firestone car...think it was a mechanic sent out to change peoples tires? Or an early Ad car?
Sadly none of the pics I have been getting have any info. The firestone car looks to belong to some "buffalo bill" type caracter! I love the lubication stall with the lights in the floor and the ladies sitting in lawn chairs watching!
I try to wait two days in between posts but this one is cool!
The 3 Stooges meet Abbott & Costello! (& try to fix a twin pump) LOL!
I like that one! Not your're typical pump scene. 4 guys who just pump the gas and one who fixes it!
Sure it's not four old gassers getting a tutorial on how to do a great restoration? : o
You know, a how to on gutting the thing!
Awesome rat ride!
I wonder what the restrooms looks like at the first station in your last post! LOL!
nice gilmore station picture!!!
Can you imagine all the bells ringing at the gilmore when there is a car at every pump!
The Texaco station with the four or five story parking garage, I was there when I was a kid going downtown everyday in the summer. Always wondered if someone ever backed one of the cars off, but no one did.
Someone check my count.......I believe there's 24 pumps lined up in that pic with 16 of 'em having lights! That's impressive.
You are correct with your math! NOW, how many oil bottles are their?
The 3 Stooges meet Abbott & Costello!
LOL
____________________________________
5c a gallon savings, that's a lot when you figure gas was what - 18c/gal?
No globes or even pump places/decals and all pumps were Ethyl.
I believe 192 bottles of oil! That place must have moved some petroleum products.
I will sing, "192 oil bottles in the racks,192 bottles! Take one out, pass it around,192 oil bottles in the racks"! OK, it needs a little work.....
I want one of those little cars!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll take the pumps in the top photo, they are very rare Boyle Dayton 1950's!
I have never seen the boyles before this pic!
Would they really have pulled a prop plane that close to the gas pump? I once oversaw a helicoptor being loaded with gas and the truck came to it and the hose was verrrrrry long.
Or is that a decommissioned plane turned into a gas stations--of course Nicole--D'oh!
Nicole, That is a fancy re-use of a decommissioned airplane! I have seen several stations with an airplane theme from back in the day...very creative if you ask me! Wings as an overhang!
The last pic is from the movie, "I.Q.". A great movie!
UMPH! COLOR PICTURES...HARD ON THE EYES....LOL! ONCE AGAIN GREAT SELECTION!
At least 10 different Smithway L-1 pumps in that Cities Service pick. All need is one door and the decorative door latch/lock! Think they could send me one?!
The second picture. The 41 Chevy hotrod that everybody is looking at. Leaded in deck lid, wingtips on the bumper, lowered rear and raised front. Typical 50's teenage hotrod. Bin there done that. Mitch

I love the stop light in that pic. You always see that type in the Bugs Bunny cartoons!
And it doesn't look like the stop light worked too well either, lol! Maybe that's why they changed the design!
Darin
I shorted you guys and girls one pic!
What I find interesting in the last set is the interior shot of the gas station is the exact same set up as a Texaco station. There have been several Texaco interior pics posted here.
SUPER! That 2nd one shows a white Coca-Cola bottle only Button....and you don't see those too often...A RARITY!
Now this was posted on the HAMB about their site.
http://theoldmotor.com/ They have excellant photos with a little background on them!
This one's for PogoGas!
cool pics. i've seen that clock somwhere......
Lubritorium! Now that is a word! Fantastic pics!!!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Does anyone store their spare tires like this man does?
Fill up my tank with salvation!!! Great pics!!!
I really need one of those pumps, thanks for the pics Kenny, they are awesome!
RARE color shot of a Gilmore station.
Please keep it on oldgas only and don't post it over at HAMB or elsewhere.

All right, who's got one of those Gilmore neons?
NICE PICS ,KEEP EM COMING.
I only post pics here. I see your gilmore neon and raise you one!
post wherever YOU like!!! still nice to see them on here...
Here is one, but I had to recreate the top lion. Love this sign, but now no where to hang it.

I see your gilmore neon and raise you one!
I see your Gilmore neon tanker and raise you two...

A little info on it... designed by W.C. James, who was head of the special effects department at Twentieth Century Pictures Studio. The truck was illuminated with 600 feet of neon tubing. Blue neon was used for the outline and side lettering. Gold neon for the radiator shell. Red neon for the cab lettering and the Red Lion and "Roar ..." slogan at the rear. Fifteen thousand volts was used to light it. Power was created by four generators mounted on the left side of the engine and driven from the fan belt.
Here is one, but I had to recreate the top lion. Love this sign, but now no where to hang it.
Craig, have you seen these pics before?...

This is all I have of Cosden, believe pump on the right is HO...

WOW, I do remember seeing it years ago. Beautiful Job, makes me just want to find a place for mine.
Thanks for the pictures.
Ran across this old thread from Dec. 2007 by Curt Cragg, some of the photos still on it.
http://www.oldgas.com/shoptalk/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002005.htmlI am enjoying the photos in this current thread very much!
I thought everyone might also enjoy this look into photos that were posted a few years ago.
You guys are doing a great job and these photos are just awesome to look at. Please keep up the good work. If I had any old photos I'd add 'em myself. Thanks to all who have contributed thus far.
I bow down to master of gilmore neon! I can only offer a gilmore girl!
I wish I had that Powerwine neon sign in that old thread, imagine the colors on that.
Dose anyone have a picture of a Cosden station or photograph of a pump done in higher octane pump plates ,i would like to see what color combos they did?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PULLING THIS ONE OUT OF YOUR STASH,THAT PHOTO HAS HELPED ME OUT ALOT & THANKS AGAIN GILMORE!
can anyone read what type of gasoline is on the sign to the right of the word "Fordson"
"Gilmore" is correct, it is Hercules.
Dennis have you ever seen a Hercules globe like that??? Would be a dandy!!!
I'm curious.....in the Sinclair pic (which is totally awesome) In front of the builing there appears to be some kind of cut-out of a woman holding what looks to be an oil can. Is this card board or metal and does anyone have one of these? I've never seen one.....whatever it is.
Just having that curb sign would be a Dandy!!!
Truck looks like it had been in a Parade, note small building in rear.
Dennis have you ever seen a Hercules globe like that??? Would be a dandy!!!
I have not seen a globe with the mule. Another one to hope for though! The same company also used a logo with the character "Hercules", the strong man.It pictures him from the shoulders up holding a wooden club.

There's also one on the side of the building to the left.
We went over 10,000 views today! This one's from my friend over at

Love the calpet picture! It's so surreal! What kinda pumps are those?
THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE LONGEST THREADS , AWESOME PICTURES KEEP EM COMING!!!!!!
Those Boyle Dayton Gas and oil Pumps in that station are just beautiful. Wish I had one and the Associated neon and chicken wing are another on the wish list. Great pictures, keep them coming.
I didn't think the photos could get better, but they are!!!!!
Thank you Dennis and the others who have been keeping this fantastic thread going.
Thought i'd share this British photo of a London filling station,
Outstanding pics!!!!I wonder if my neighborhood would let me paint "gilmore lion head motor oil " on the side of my house?
I love the pumps with women's names!!!!!!!!!
I love the pumps with women's names!!!!!!!!!
They are named after the famous Dionne Quintuplets
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/fts/wichita_200803A12.html
My wife and I looked through all the pics. Very cool. We were born in the early 70s so these pics were before our time. The pics really share the feel of the early gas station vs. what they are today. Keep the old pics coming. Especially Sinclair stuff from the 50s-60s :-)
How about that Fry with the totalizer, that's got to be rare?
Just sold the GLM totalizer I had.
Lot's of signs and globes, that I never knew existed from these old photos.
I know one of you good poeple probably have a conoco minuteman sign. Well, have you met his big brother? Anyone have this in your garage?
Few more shots of it...

I know one of you good poeple probably have a conoco minuteman sign. Well, have you met his big brother? Anyone have this in your garage?
Might have a problem fitting these in the garage too...

Must be common practice to take pics when hanging signs at White Eagle stations...
ROSEBUD...

Always liked the design of this Teepee station...

OMG! I MISSED 3 PAGES OF PHOTOS!
I was only gone a few days but I feel like Rip-Van-Winkle on this thread... : o
I don't know, maybe a dozen pic's ago, but what was the London Brand with the arrow shaped globe? Any pic's of the globe? I know, it might be too many pages ago to ask...
So many really cool old pic's over just a couple of days--it's just much for this gal to take in all at once! : )
WOW, great photos!!! Wasn't sure if I was going to get into this thread, but boy was I wrong!!! In looking at them you can really tell they are old - there are people at the service stations that:
1) look like they care about you as a customer
2) speak english
3) take pride in their work
See if you can find any of the above nowadays. Good luck.
Ethyl was always the bright, shining beacon of fun everywhere she went.
she looks like she would be fun

Ethyl was always the bright, shining beacon of fun everywhere she went.
WOWSERS!!! THAT'S pretty racey for the 20's-30's era. I believe I would've bought Miss Ethyl a drink.
There are some really cool photos in here. Love the jeweled metal body globes on top of the Fry's a way back......That and I'm still laughing about Ethyl! Oh my stomach hurts LOL !!

Bet they made more off selling Tires than station operators made selling gas & service etc.
We all love seeing photos of old gas stations, but ...

hi
a few more from Downunder

I'm sorry Ladies but we only have a one size fits ALL for glasses today...LOL
Why not just post a link to HAMB site, instead of copying & pasting here?
Well there are 1233 pages and 24660 posts on the vintage pic page. Now gas station pics can be few and far between, so I thought why not copy and paste here. I do a few every other day and you get something new to enjoy.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=428585
LOL! Obviously that last American Station hasn't had a review by the company in a couple decades. I can't imagine what the restrooms look like!
LOL! Obviously that last American Station hasn't had a review by the company in a couple decades. I can't imagine what the restrooms look like!
Dont be so hasty, just like the camera adds 20-30 lbs; it also adds 20-30 layers of grime to buildings AND 100-150 grease/oil spots on driveways. Makes sense to me, I'm sure the restroom floors are clean enough to eat off of.
Looking at the sign above pump, picture was taken of a closed down station.

An obvious answer and I for one greatly appreciated you doing this for us.
Nice "Bumperettes" in that last picture!
Great post, thanks for taking the time to do this.
Sinclar hub caps on the truck. need a set.
One more from "Bills".
Man, these images sure do conjure up dreams of what roadtrips may have been like 50+ years ago.
KEEP 'EM COMIN'!
Man, these images sure do conjure up dreams of what roadtrips may have been like 50+ years ago.
KEEP 'EM COMIN'!
It makes me a little melancholy to think of "those days" and the road trips. My first roadie was when I was in my teens (mid 1980's), my dad HATED driving, so no road trips when I was a kid. :'( I wear my vehicles out with my kids these days, we drive A LOT!!!
Here are a couple that I have purchased off of ebay, lately.
This first one is a B&W "oldie, but goodie"; that has been tinted.

I can't remember if I shared this one before? So if I have, sorry about that;

Of course can't forget where all of this started, a man and his cart;
That Texaco cart is absolutely priceless !!!!!!!! Ed Shaver
It took me forever staring at the cart to realize that there is a dog under the cart!!! Great pictures!!!
nice love that shell truck an john deere
RETRO PETRO HEAVEN!
That old John Deere is killer!
Why o Why can't I find one of those BOYLE-DAYTON oil and pump station gas pumps. Man would I love to find one.
That outdoor Mobilubrication bay is impressive. Clean as a whistle and all that porcelain! Leaves quite an impression even by todays standards.

Dig that Huge Coca-Cola Sign....It's larger than the Station I.D. sign LOL!
It says that it was located in San Antonio - I'd like to know where in SA it actually was. I'm sure there's nothing left of it at this point
Your pushing 40,000 views. This thread will soon be a web site within a site! Keep up the great work. It's really appreciated.
From Richmond Virginia :

Egglestons Garage shot 1989 . This was a Texaco dealer origionally. It was built sometime in 1934.

Built as The Harvey System in 1930, this outstanding piece of Greek revival is stil at Moore and West Broad street

I shot this with a 1944 Agfa 120 X 120 on Kodak Verichrome back in 1985 IOt was at one time a Socony/ Mobil at Allison and the 2300 blk of Cary street . It was razed in 1999.

Origionally, a Ford tractor dealer , gasoline was sold under the 1st floor areas. They were a Richfield dealer until becomming Capital garage in the late seventies . They then sold Phillips/ Little oil products . In 2000, Capital Garage became capital Garage apartments .
Ed Shaver
The station in the 1985 photo on Cary Street was originally the Gold Star Service Station, selling Amoco products. I have several mid-1930s photos, but don't know how to upload them.

SUNOCO & SHELL tankers...

STANDARD/RED CROWN/ZEROLENE tankers...

Take your pic- GULF, SINCLAIR, TEXACO, ESSO...
DOC, this one of your pics/models?...
NO, But it def looks more like the typical style that my Buddy Allan shoots!
BTW, that's a studio shot of a model mated with an outdoor shot....easily done.
Looks like the canopy on the poor Texaco station above was settling a little bit! Looks to be built on a little hill. Neat station though.
I like those old tire covers advertising the brands. Does anyone have any in thier collections? I would guess they are a scarce item with cross over appeal to car collectors.
Darin

antioch,where i live
On the photo with the two pumps, with two guys in between leaning on the tires...What kind of globes on those pumps?
Wayne Henderson
P.S. The Bryan-Cooper Oil Co photo (Atlantic) above is from Laurinburg, NC
Where was the picture taken with the blown out globe on the visible pump? Texas City? Looks like an explosion aftermath.
The last one had me going with the guy on the hood cleaning the windshield. Seriously? On the hood? Then I looked closer and realized who was working on the car.
DAWSON CREEK DISASTER: FEBRUARY 13, 1943
DAWSON CREEK DISASTER: FEBRUARY 13, 1943
I've heard of that in passing, but knew nothing about it. Looked it up on the internet and learned quite a bit.
KS 82 GT,
If you haven't watched that Stooge short, you should! I've watched the beginning of that one over and over looking at the great Mobil advertising all over the place! I crack up every time I see it....SUPER SERVICE!
"Violent is the Word for Curly Part 1 (1938)(in color)" is what it is under in my favorites on Youtube.
Take a look!

Couple Crowns at a gas and grocery...
Cool old station/garage that sold Gilmore as well as many other brands through the years. Still exists and is now a french restaurant.

I love the gilmore globes in the last shot! Sometimes it hard to understand just how old they are till you see them in a picture! Thanks for the great pics Gilmore!!!
Not oil and gas related but cool just the same.
Cool old station/garage that sold Gilmore as well as many other brands through the years. Still exists and is now a french restaurant.
Man, that's a cool place - is the tree still there or was it chopped?
Unfortunately, the tree is no longer there. Here's the history page on the restaurant's website...
http://www.lechene.com/about/historyAs an eye-catching feature, they incorporated the large oak tree that used to shade the old refreshment stand into the front stone wall of the new building. It stood majestically between the garage on the right, and the new cafe on the left. A drinking fountain was installed at the base of this signature oak tree. Unfortunately, this oak was damaged by a truck in the 1960’s and did not survive. It remained standing as a dead trunk until the end of 1980, when the last remnants were finally removed.
What brand is that visible pump with the diamond shape next to the Gilmore?
Both are Gilmore- the first/closest one is Blu-Green and the next one with the "Roar with Gilmore" globe is most likely Red Lion. Is that what you were asking, Craig?
Right to Left; Blu-Green, Roar, Economy, Union & maybe BEACON.
There are only three pumps though ! The Gilmore on the left side and the one next to it is the one I am referring to.
Sorry, I was referring to post # 255465 & now I'm guessing Craig is asking about 2nd picture in Post # 255657.
These are awesome to look at. Thanks to all who shared them.
Great Photos! The last pic of the Pepsi Machine is great. Model 27 Vendolator and the Trico thermometer above the door. Gas was probably a quarter a gallon or even less.
In post 255657 on page 36, what is the thing to the left of the West Coast Service building? It looks like some kind of water, air service tower thing. It has a lamp shade on the top.
Thanks,
Mike
Air station. I don't know what make/model.

What are they valued at now a days?
Wittle Wayne 60s at the pedal car station...
Has anyone noticed the sinclair airplane pump at the gas station? How odd that fuel is being sold on the street. Is the pump plate a plate or a decal?I recall someone on here saying they didn't make pump plates with the planes on them.
I don't think i have seen a coke machine on an island either
Sinclair "Aircraft" was a non-ethyl premium grade automotive fuel. Although it was not sold at all stations, most Sinclair stations offered this product. Pump ID was by decal only, with several designs of one piece globes and an extremely rare three-piece glass globe known.

Something tells me "THE FREE OIL CO." didn't last very long.

NICE UPDATES! I WOULDN'T MIND HAVING THAT EARLY 50'S PONTIAC SEDAN-DELIVERY!
What's that bladder thing with the hose the guy holding?
Canvas water bottle.Hung on front of car as you crossed the arid desert.
Speedway 79 commercial photo.
I would love to know the story behind the Brand A, B, C, D in the 5 gallon cans. Not like she is going to try each one to see how well her car runs.
Hey gas Pedeler , Amoco really did a stunt like that back I guess bout 1970 here . The Amoco rep had several cans of gasoline branded as Esso, Shell, Pure , and of course Amoco Premium . A measured amount was put in the Ford inline engine mounted on a stand for everyone to see. Yeah, ay get one guess who always semed to win an it betta be right !!!!!!
Ans: Amoco Premium .........
Ed Shaver
Now that is a rare photo of two Starkeys together, wish they had a close up.
THANKS FOR POSTING THE OLD PICTURES , I SURE ENJOY LOOKING AT THEM . AND IM SURE EVERYONE ELSE DOES TO. THANKS AGAIN!!!
What's that bladder thing with the hose the guy holding?
Desert or cooled water bag, hung on bumper or outside rear view mirror [didn't have to stop to retrieve]. It's a rubber bag covered w/ canvas & some just used a cork stopper. Canvas was soaked w/ water & as air passed over bag, evaporation would cool the water.
When Dad would drive the tractor out in the field, he'd fill a gallon jug w/ water & wrap w/ gunny sack around jug then dip in stock tank to soak the gunny & set it in shade of fence row.
Wonder if that gilmore plane is still around?
I ate at the Bomber Resaurant the other night. Parked under the B17 and enjoyed all the old pics of the Station!!!

Dick,
I grew up with the term"Gunny Sack".You don't hear it used much anymore. The newer generation don't know what you are talking about.I remeber the desert water bags and of course the auto air conditioner which attached to the window of the car.My dad idenitified such as "California People".We still call em THE GOOD OLE DAYS
auto air conditioner which attached to the window of the car
This is for Nicole, cause she ain't old enough to Remember! LOL
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_cooler
Nope, never saw those cars as a kid,let alone that funny looking scoop thing hanging from the window. I do remember vent windows on cars. On a nice day, I miss real vent windows.
I noticed in the footnotes in DB's link the reference to swamp coolers. When I first saw one of these on a car at an auto show several years ago, I was told it was a swamp water cooler. When it ran out of water, you could stop anywhere and refill it with- well- water from anywhere!
Supposedly one of the first in the car air conditioners had a pan for ice in which an internal fan blew air over it.
Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to do this!I just sat here and looked at all 28 pages!Being a car guy and just getting started in the gas pumps etc. the pics were great.
And just think some of the pumps and signs in these photos are sitting and hanging in our garages!
Love the koolmotor station! Thanks for posting Pierce!
Hard to tell, but all the visibles are twins, clockface as well.
Here are a couple Pics I have

Loving the indoor shell!
Caltex pictures are from an old station in the town of Linkoping in Sweden - mid 50s IMO.
//Claes
Swedish texaco is really cool!! Thanks for the location!!
Gas 22 cents? What was that, the thirties? That must have been a lot of money then. I remember either the late 60's or the early 70's it being 35 cents a gallon. Or mabybe I'm so old my memory is just going...
You could still buy gas for under 25 cents a gallon through the late sixties. There was still what they called gas wars and a lot of promotions. ( buy 8 gallons of gas get a free glass). Oh yeah, that was back when there was still attendants. I did that for a few months after high school and made 95 cents an hour.
By the mid seventies gas started climbing upwards, stamps started to disappear and you would have thought it was a national disaster when 50 cents a gallon showed up on the pump.
I remember in 1974 when gas went to 50 cents a gallon and I wondered how us working people where going to make it! Then the gas lines began and the oil embargo. We only thought we were in troubled times then!
I remember when I was a kid (probably 1968 or so) my dad driving all over town looking for a station that still sold gas for under 30c in protest because he was ticked the price was going up. In 1979 I said I was going to sell my Camaro big block if gas hit 75c, and we all know what happened that year.
In 1970 you could still get gas for 25.9 in Spokane at the "no name" station on 2nd and Brown, but your car didn't run too well after you filled up.
Started drivin in 72. There was a gas war going on here and it got down to25.9 for about 1 week.
So I'm guessing that pic with the visibles and the handwritten sign for gas 22 cents would have been for 5 or 10 gallons--not the price per gallon...
...
No Nicole, the price would have been 22 cents per gallon. Visables were commonly used up into the fifties. The last visable used here in Cheyenne was still in use during the sixties. When I worked in the gas station in 1954-55 gasoine was 31.9 for regular and 33.9 for ethyl. The only time gas dropped below that was when they had gas wars between stations. The companies like Gulf or Standard would temporarely drop the prices to bring in customers. Mitch
Those are some great photos. Love to have some of that stuff.
There was some pictures of the giant Goodyear tire in an article in Hemmings Classic Cars a few months ago. Interesting to see a different picture pop up here.
This is by far my favorite thread of all the message boards that I'm on. Thanks to everyone that has contributed to it.
Here's a pic on ebay that Doc might like...
Doc's Auto Parts Garage
Love to have one of those General tire signs.
I bought a box full of old 8x10 b/w photos that have a bunch of gas/oil themes. I need to scan them in.
I was excited to see that in this photo of the wagon I have in my collection one of the lamps made by Charles Pratt N.Y. who specialized in whale oil and kerosene lamps. According to wikipedia Mr Pratt founded Astral Oil Works that later sold out to John Rockefeller's Standard Oil CO in 1874. Photo is on page 25 posted by GILMORE.

I know where that exact building is with the cars covered in sand and dirt in front of the garage. It is on route 66 here in Oklahoma.
On the Pure/US Tires pic in Ames, IA. I was up that way traveling through this weekend. If I would have seen that picture I would have checked out the intersection to see if it was still there, although looking at Google Maps leaves to to believe that it's just as well that I didn't. I believe this to be the corner of Duff and Lincoln Way, and if so, although there's an Amoco and a BP station at that intersection, this particular building is gone. The Amoco is of their 60's/70's archetecture, so I guess that's one plus.
Sinclair station Between Hancock and Calumet michigan (boston, highway location)
The last Standard picture was in Leadville Colorado. I bought out the bulk plant there and have those pumps and the signs from that station. COOL for me to see it.
Thanks

Somewhere in Quebec. Anyone ever seen the "magic eye" to check your oil?
Love the photo of the twin! Never seen the "Magic Eye" before.
I love looking at these photos!
anyone want to guess what the most valuable collectible is in this pic?? i'll give you a BIG hint, its not gas/oil related...
The Bomber jacket? My Dads is here packed away somewhere.
Early service station from portland oregon. found this picture last night on the web.

Thanks for posting that. Checked the website and was able to add another address to my Gilmore station list- WILLAMETTE GARAGE, 7th Ave & 12 St, West Linn
Wondering what that guy on the right is doing in the last photo?... upchucking?... pickin' up a penny?
GULF - TEXACO - TYDOL...
Great photos, great history, people should have taken more photos back then. Utahbob
They did...I'm going through a box of old family pictures and most of them will end up in the trash.
One for Mr. Ed Shaver...
Man you got a ton of great old pics!
The associated station was in Downtown Portland on Burnside st, and that sign (Light of the world) I remember even as a little kid.
Great pictures!! Thanks for sharing them with us!!
LOTS OF NICE ADVERTISING IN THE LAST PICTURE,THE GLOBE IN ON THE MIDDLE PUMP IS A DANDY! AND I WILL BET SOMEWHAT RARE.
Boy would I like another Penn-o-meter pump !!
Your 2nd pic of pumps on the public sidewalk..love that one.
Great pics as always.THANKS.

Wonder whats under the hood of that Gilmore machine!!
Whatever it is, she seems to be enjoying it!
How msny people besides me noticed that the steering wheel is on the wrong side in the first picture and that the signs in the background are backward. Mitch

Nice....you can never have too many station lighters.
Oh my! That donkey ad would be a little over the top even now. Station owner was mad enough to hire a guy and a donkey to stand out front! Crazy...
Curiosity got the best of me and I had to look it up on a perpetual calendar. The Olds in the background is a 55-57 model, so I started looking for Friday, April 7 starting in 1955. The Grand Opening picture is from 1961.
That looks like Lee Marvin working at Shell!! Must have liked pumping gas between movies.Lol .Thanks for posting old pics guys,my fav part of this site!! Dave

Renult 4-C V's , one of the all time worst automobiles ever made . The service station pitures are however , FIRST RATE ! Ed Shaver
Hey 1937 GMC - where did you ever find that old pic of the Jordan Valley Tourist Camp? That's the small town where I live here in Southern Ontario. That business is still running today, but unfortunately the rusty gold next to it (pump, lollipop and oil bottle rack) are all gone, because I have been around there a million times!
Dave
Did you notice the European Wayne 60?
Or what ever it is.
Extra hip/bump on side panel
Did you notice the pump island station lighters at the Texaco station. I haven't seen them like that before with the porcelain lights mounted approximately 6-8 feet from the center post. The globe mounted at the top of the post is awesome. I think I'll have to do that to one of my island displays.
I have a large collection of Old Gas Station photos on my laptop; not sure where I found the Jordon Valley picture, but save them as I do research / surf the web.
Enjoy the Pics!
Great stuff. I love this thread. Thank you.
what does that texaco sign say???
Bensin means gas in swedish, and motoroljor means motoroil.
That COLOR PHOTO above is AWESOME!
That FRY PUMP!
5 Cent Hamburgers! "Buy em by the sack". You think that's where White Castle got the idea? Or maybe the other way around!........................................ Snappy Service! LOL Too Cool !

"In 1921, a little shack in Wichita Kansas opened its window. And by the end of the day, with a $3.75 profit in his pocket, our founder knew he was on to something".
Whoo hoo, my first (and probably only) contribution. From a 1970 UMD yearbook talking about the history of College Park. Any ideas of date? 20's early 30's is my guess.
Nicole, I think the diamond label coke bottles on the signs in your picture are pre or very early 1920's.
All of these are stations that were in Antioch,or close by towns.i have been to many, although most are no longer standing.

This one I'm not sure of,but looks like a curbpump on the left

[/URL]

Sinclair was right in town

This one was only a block away,no longer standing

Used to be about two miles away. Again no longer standing

This last one was not a station, but a country club.in the mid eighties it was converted into a private residence.i know, cause I put the hvac in it.the guy who remodeled it no longer owns it,but became a great friend .i still stop by and have an occasional " manhattan" with him.

Hope you enjoyed them. Ps Scott and Wayne may be interested in the globes at that Sinclair.
Here's a Gulf Station in my home town of Cumming, Ga.
Here's a gas stations that was here in louisville in the 20's or 30's. Check out the Pennzoil neon!
That's nothing! I have seen a Post office, a Grocery, a bus station, an eatery and a gas station combined in a small-medium sized building!
That's NOTHING as what Jack, myself & a few others here remember USING/PATRONIZING that type of building & it included the Feed, Fertilizer, Seed, Mail ordered Chicks, Phone [only one for Miles around except Dr. & Sheriff, Before Area Codes & Zip Codes] & Most DIDN'T Have an indoor toilet, just a hand water pump.
For Local News they had a wood fired Pot Belly Stove in center of room w/ chairs around it!
I remember when the trash can was full of used qt. cans at the station- imagine the trash can at the polly station..
Been a while since I last checked this thread, so if this station has been posted before.... Sorry about that. If it hasn't, here is a nice look into the not all that distant past....
I love that double lubester with the signs on top of the pumps!
Stuckey's!
I don't know which is neater to see: the Stuckey's or the Corvair van.
I think my Dad must've hated Stuckey's when we traveled. My brothers and I would always bug him to stop and when we ever did it was a good half hour of us bugging him or Mom for the crappy plastic trinkets they had for sale when we could be making time. Guess my '60's childhood shows.
Thinking about it, this and a couple of other chains were the forerunners of today's convenience stores.

The Oakdale Inn, showcaseing the gas station next to it, looks to be one of the early motels (geared towards motorists, not train travelers). Cool!
Great motel advertising...
publicenemy1925: Thank you for taking the time to seek out all these great photos and sharing them with us. It is greatly appreciated and I hope to see you continue posting more if you find them.
Yes Yes! I really never noticed how they would sometimes just put those end cap islands next to the visible pumps. That way the pump would sit on the ground and then the island would still protect it. I learn alot of little tidbits from these great pictures.
Look at the roof in that last photo too. Notice the globes?!
Wow;
Looks like Jeff's Texaco sells EVERYTHING Texaco had to offer.
What a small world we live in! The pic you have of the Post office in Gage, NM was just 18 miles West of where I grew up in Deming, NM! Of course, I'm not of the era but was really cool being able to relate to the area.
Wow those cans on the top pic look like milk cans. I wonder if the same company made both...
Nicole, I'd be surprised if the same company made both. Milk cans originally had a thick tin plating, because most metals give a terrible taste to milk, and were high-grade stainless steel later on. I agree, though, the Richfield cans do look like the cream cans of the Midwest.
The gas cans of the era I see in area flea markets appear to be galvanized.

great picture of a texaco gas station in france, you can see how everything was displayed for promoting texaco
My french is not great but does 'essence de puissence' have a double meaning here? I know essence by itself can mean gasoline, but it also means as we know it in english, as the innate nature or meaning of something.
So is it the 'essence of power' or the 'gasoline of power' or both? If both, very sophisticated advertisement.
Both works for it, but I think it could be more "gasoline of power"
by the way, I have the flange sign on the left, I love seeing the signs I have on original locations were they were used for.
Do ya think Bennies Grocery has lard? LOL
The same guy painting the ads painted the gas pump. How often would he have to paint that do you think? Also does it look like most of the ads are painted on the back of some kind of metal tray? Maybe like some of the lollipop signs we see on OLDGAS he's painted over other porcelain signs...
Jus' wondering.
I love the old Harley Dealership. I would love to have that photo blown up and framed on the wall.
Notice the 2 shell ethyl pump plates..
Yeah, I seen them as well as the Green Streak and Super Shell. I would love to have them.
So Blacktee's wife posted a thing on Facebook about a "jungle yacht" little search, and found this photo.how cool is that?

What kind of globes we got there?
It looks like it pivots, sorta like a 5th wheel set up. You can barely notice the void in behind the rear wheels of the power unit. It looks like a truck & trailer set up with tightly fitting wind deflectors.
Are those oil cans hanging from that gulf sign pole?
Nice Eco 40 at that Gulf station.
Are those oil cans hanging from that gulf sign pole?
I was wondering the same thing.
Yep, they're cans guys . I forget which book I have that has that photo in it . I think it's the book, American Gas Station . Hey, if someone tryed that today , someone would have the poor owner up on pollution and littering charges ! Ed Shaver
I was giving this today to go with the calso sign i just got thought you guys would like. This station was in Kalispell MT.

Couldn't read the smaller print, what insect problems was FLIT used for?
DDT would kill almost anything.
Even small animals in concentrated enough amounts.
Got into water supplies, ingested by fish and would kill the Bald Eagles eating them.
Hence it was outlawed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDTChuck
Thanks Gaspedlar,
Interesting article. I was familiar with DDT, but was wondering what the labling would be. Was it an all purpose use? Was wondering what the large type that's not quite legible--what would the manufacturers put down to catch the attention of the consumer? Touted for house and garden?
BTW DDT was very effective and eliminated bedbugs in the U.S. and would have been dusted on mattresses.
Dr Seuss used to do the advertising for FLIT, pre-WWII I believe. Several of his characters in his books were seen there first (or in his political cartoons).
Thanks as always..I never get tired of looking at these.
I love these Standard of Indiana stations. There's one a few blocks from my place:

Wow! That's a Crosley pickup on the side of Ben Laws Service. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of one from "back in the day".
I like the old S&H sign hanging on the last pic in 1937 GMC's post.
Did you know those guys are still around, kind of?
Also, it's amazing how many Green Stamp-type programs there were during their heyday. I'm not that old, but I'm old enough to remember licking and sticking those things *and* going down to the local S&H Green Stamp store and picking stuff out.
Atlantic sign pole--What a greatly engineered and handsome pole--I really like! Public Enemy thanks for posting the great old pics!
That post is great, would love to have one. Had the base or what looked just like that once. Wish I would have saw that photo, would have put it together with parts. Thanks, keep em coming.
Anyone else notice the gilbarco 86 with a glass top?
Yeah, it looks like a glass top to me. Never herd of a G&B 86 with a glass top.
That hanging Phillips porcelain round looks pretty early, never seen that one before but I don't look at Phillips items too often. Would that be a 42" sign? I wonder what the color combination was? I would like to see a pic of anyone has one in their collection to share.

The Frazer Dealership is just a few blocks north of where I work. It has a auto repair business on the left side of the building and a glass repair business on the right side of the building now. Brady

One of the guys is/was the mayor of Portland. The photo is of the Plymouth-Gilmore endurance run, in which the Plymouth traveled the Oregon-Washington Highways, 24 hours a day for 31 days. Logging 21,662 miles, 698.77 miles a day. The car ran a continuous 744 hours and was never shut-off. Blu-Green gas and Lion Head oil were used for the run.
I would love to have some of those old signs!!! Hugh Gibson

Since we hit 500,000 views I suppose a extra picture before saturday is ok!!
Great pictures, not sure if the stations and cars are as good to look at as the ladies. Thanks again and keep them coming.

Can you guys get some gargoyle station pics?
Hi Noah,
There really isn't such a thing as a "Gargoyle" station, at least in my opinion. The Gargoyle logo was mostly prevalent in the teens and 1920's, before the Socony-Vacuum merger and well before the companies had adopted a branded station so to speak. While SOCONY had branded stations a few years before the merger, Vacuum Oil Company really didn't. Vacuum was mostly about lubricant production, not gasoline. Socony-Vacuum had very strict standards after the merger about every detail of a station, from the building style, to the placement of the Pegasus signs, even what color the bathroom would be.
Gargoyle Mobiloil signs were all over the place in the teens and 20's. Early on, Mobiloil was sold at many outlets, including other branded gas stations. After the S-V merger the Pegasus symbol was adopted and the Gargoyle began it's fade out. That's why you never see a "Gargoyle branded" station.
Darin
Noah,
In checking my "to be posted pictures file" I found three examples of stations displaying the Gargoyle signage. Top right corner of the Tanker, between the pumps on the Coles Station, last and probably best example is the Socony Station you can see the curbside sign to the left and the "cabinet" to the right side of the pumps that has the gargoyle globe on top. Hope you enjoy!

What's the life sized man sign on the roof? Looks like he got the hold of a pigeons tail! Tho I imagine it's a flag...
Anyone have an extra flux-capacitor for sale? Great photos!

More Parkersburg,WV

I found this photo today. Its a local station thats been long gone. I saw Socony pumps & darn near hit the ceiling! Im going to look for any other pics to see if I can find out what happened to the station...its a bank & parking lot now. Hear me out but Im thinking those signs in the pic are the Socony signs Ive been digging. Its a small town & I dont believe there was more than one Socony station back in the 30s.

Rapidaytons with visible attachments, great pumps. Bet they were very top heavy.
looks like Im collecting pics of local stations now...

I had never really looked at this thread that much, but it is really cool. I went back to the first of the thread and saw this picture and knew that it looked familiar. It is the Frank Lloyd Wright designed station in Cloquet, MN just southwest of Duluth. I have been going by that station on the way to our cabin in Canada every year for over thirty years! It is on highway 33 that runs through town. It has been a landmark there for years and is supposed to be the only cantilever roofed, Frank Lloyd Wright designed, filling station in the world....just so ya know.....Gary
OLD ACCIDENT FILE PIC FROM THE 50'S TWO TOWNS AWAY FROM WHERE I LIVE....
First picture with the horse in the truck. That's interesting; How they rigged up a bracket and off set the Mobilgas globe so it would clear the canopy.
That unibike (or what ever it's called) looks like one dangerous ride!

What possible good would a steering wheel be on that unicycle? Wouldn't you just "lean over" the way you want to turn.........
Does anyone have a pic or 2 of a golden rule station???
.
I wish my 41 Lincoln in my garage looked as good as the one in that Gilmore station. Mitch
On that last Gilmore pic, is that an armored car? I first noticed the port hole on the side panel and thought that was unique, then it clicked that it was a gun port just below it, then I saw the one on the passenger door. The duellies are probably the other giveaway. It doesn't really stand out as being an armored car.

I'm pretty sure it is an armored car, at least that's what I've always believed.
These pics of the GILMORE Serve Yourself gas station (Gas-A-Teria) initially appeared in a Nov. 22, 1948 issue of LIFE magazine. Years ago, Google archived the issues of LIFE magazine and made them available online as well as many unseen photos.

I absolutely love this last one. The Sunoco itself is wonderful!! Those big globes standing tall. But that big steam locomotive coming into the shot is priceless!! I can feel myself standing there there with my Nehi just enjoying watching that thing chug on in.
Here is one, The man, his dog, his gas pump, and my son 23 years ago.
That Esso script neon sign is out of this world!!
Great picture Craig... Tom
another for Sunday
The Esso sign, pole, and air meters with globes, WOW. Would love to have been there to see that or just have a sign and pole like that.
WHAT THE!?!?! Ever hear of a jack stand??? What is he trying to do anyway?
He has a belt hooked to the model T wheel to run the gas pump.
Whatever it is being used to jack the car up under the running board- I don't know. Would have been interesting if it slipped off.
more

A few I found.
Interesting thing about the second picture. The main sign has the straight arrow yet it also has the diamond bumped out around the "S" & "O". From what I've been able to teach myself about the Sunoco logo, this is VERY rare situation and I think could only happen during a transition of the logo. If you look at the back of the truck, this is how the straight arrow configuration of the logo usually looks with the diamond edges running straight through. If you study Sunoco oil cans, the bumped out diamond doens't happen until 1961-62. This picture was dated 1951. So I don't understand this sign/picture. Still much to learn!!!!!

Here is where I got these few pictures I've posted. It's actually a site with high resolution billboard pics. But some show stations. I sized them down to post. Type your brand in the search box. It's interesting. Mostly East coast it says.

This is quite an exceptional and modern Mobil station which was situated right near Disneyland’s parking lot in Anaheim, CA. The station, which was photographed in 1956, with its modern, single-post supported canopies was designed by the architects Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams. Another feature worth noting is the hanging gas pumps which are also supported by a single-post in the same theme as the canopy. Mobil no doubt picked the team to design and build this station as a marketing scheme to impress the many visitors to Disneyland and keep them buying Mobil products on the trip back home and where they lived.
Some very cool pics. Went through all 29 pages. Wow! Mamie Van Doren!! Va Va Voom!!
And there are some double cylinder visibles on wheel (Moto Naphta?)!! Those were different!!!

The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is my passion.
I have tons of great items, plus a couple of the old banners.
That picture is one of many circulating around. The Mobil station is no longer there. It is now a Carl's Jr.!
That big Gulf station in that industrial area w/bridge in background is a really good picture. I like that showcase out front. I'll bet that would be an awesome sight to see that sign lit at night.

What strikes me about all the old pictures before the 60's is how many items were left outside with no one stealing them. I know some items are on wheels or have covers to lock up but as you can see alot of other items could not have been put up every day.

Please bear with me, as I believe this image needs some background:
I have a "thing" for old radio programs, especially those that were sponsored by Oil Company's. One of those programs was; "The Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen" which originally ran from 1933 to the start of WWII...
Some of the Major Sponsors were: Skelly Oil, HI-SPEED Oil, B-A (in Canada) and Richfield Oil...

This Aircraft is the oldest known still flying Stearman Model 4E... It was delivered to the Richfield Oil Company on Oct 28, 1929... The aircraft was later used by Richfield Oil, as a promotional vehicle for their sponsorship of the Jimmie Allen Flying Club.
From Aug. 28th to Sept 2nd 2013, this plane is scheduled to be flown to an Antique Aircraft show near Blakesburg, Iowa. The "Fly-In" is not open to the Public, but if anyone lives in the area they may get the opportunity to see the aircraft in flight?...
Since I posted the "Jimmie Allen" aircraft advertising Richfield...
I might as well post an image of the 1st Plane to cross the Pacific... Non-stop. The Miss Veedol:

On October 5, 1931, Clyde Pangborn with co-pilot Hugh Herndon undertook a 41 hour flight from Sabishiro Beach, Misawa, Aomori Prefecture, Japan to the United States. The two pilots crash-landed the plane in the hills of East Wenatchee, Washington.

Nice set of pictures. Gives one pause when we complain about life today and you see what the 30's meant to a whole generation of Americans. Picking up your family with 7 children and heading west with only a vision and hope, in a car that would break down at any moment, on "roads" that may lead to nowhere. Yes good to get one back to reality.

Fred:
Thanks, it definitely does make you appreciate what we have today. I have owned the same 1930 Model A Ford for 41 years and drove it round trip from Dallas, Texas to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to attend a national Model A Ford Convention in 1986 (approx 2,600 miles round trip), I felt some of the same apprehension the pioneers must have had wondering whether I would make it to my destination and back. Of course back when the migrants were escaping the dust bowl they didn't have cell phones, paved roads, service stations and restaurants or doctors and hospitals every few miles as we have today. Come to think of it, I didn't have a cell phone in 1986 but I took a national Model A Ford Club of America roster with me in case I broke down and needed help along the way from a nearby club member. I had my four and six year old sons with me and we had a real blast - they are now in their early 30's and still comment on the trip. I often think of the Okies heading out west in their dilapidated jalopies being held together by baling wire and a prayer with about $3 worth of gas in their tank and less cash in their pocket as pioneers much like those who rode the wagon trains on the Oregon Trail. They often buried their children on the trail and had to not only fight the elements and terrain but the hostile Indians. We all need to count our blessings!
Take care and have a Merry Christmas!
Fred
90% sure that tanker is in front of the Cleveland city hall. Looks like Standard oil off to the side. I never knew that. Figures Rockefeller would've been close to the politicians. lol
I was trying to find vintage historical 60's era photos of the Standard station that I would go to with my dad when I was a kid. Looking through some of the local archives I found all of these. All these places are within a mile or three of where I grew up.

Those depression photos are incredible!! Guys can deal with all that ***** but I sure feel for what some woman and the kids had to go through!
I stand corrected. Its weird though how the windows are arched in the older picture on the third floor. They must have done some renovation at some point.
Not only that, but I'm pretty sure Standard Oil was in a much larger building.lol Definitely jumped the gun.
I stand corrected. Its wierd though how the windows are arched in the older picture on the third floor. They must have done some renovation at some point.
Yeah Jim, a lot can happen in the 83 years since the first photo was taken. I noticed the third floor arched windows changing too. Notice the third floor window on the "setback" part of the building on the right still has the arches.

My folks left Illinois in 1936 in a 1928 Dodge pulling a homemade trailer hesding for Spokane WA to pick fruit. Mom and Dad and six kids, I wasn't born yet. Somewhere in Nebraska they couldn't make it up one hill so Dad threw out her washing machine and some other stuff. She wouldn't let him throw out her sewing machine. They didn't make it to Washington, all the farther they got was to Cheyenne, Wy. They went broke here where Dad found a job and settled here. His story was always that he never did make enough money to get back out of Cheyenne. I was born the next year here in Cheyenne. I sent some of these type of pictures to my sister in Calif. and told her to email them to her grandkids. She said they did not want to believe her when she told them that she didn't have a inside toilet has a kid until she went off to college in 1954. As you can see all the Okies were not from Oklahoma. Some cool ones I got in a email today.

Wonder why there would be two Texaco stations on the same side of the street right next to one another? Never seen same brand next to one another back in the day! Strange to say the least.
The guy in the Shell uniform in the above picture must be Eugene Levy's father.
Eugene Levy played the role of the Dad in American Pie. He is the only actor to have appeared in all eight of the American Pie films.
Man what's under that sign is a real drag, a bummer, if you know what I mean. Commie stooges? Hippies?

Sharp Brunette in the black dress. Oh, and there is a cool Sunoco truck too!!
one of the few pictures I have been able to find of a Sweney station... this one in Springfield, IL

Discovered this pic out of Kalamazoo Mi. this morning while on my early morning coffee search.
What a great picture!! And awesome that it's in color. There is a lot going on in this picture.
The pump is incredible in the dark blue! Personally this is my favorite shade of blue for anything Sunoco. And all the porcelain ribbons and the PPP. Just looks awesome! (Should there be a base around/under this?)
To the right is the quart rack that I've only ever seen with the 1946 Mercury Made & DynaLube cans on the sign. Unfortunately the sign in this pic is completely blacked out, because this shows a later, early 50's Dynalube can in the rack. I wonder if that sign matches that can? If so, would be the first time I would have seen such a sign.
And what I believe are porcelain ribbons wrapping around the edge of the building roof line.
But the creme de la creme of this pic, from a not so often seen point of view, has got to be the Ladies sign hanging off of the corner of the building in the background. What a great pic of this piece in action.
I'm thinking these Men/Ladies only versions where used when the baths were on different sides of the building???
On another note, that guys car could sure use a good polishing!
Wow!! What a great picture!!
Lots of times the Mens room was inside so the attendants and mechanics didnt have to go out around the building. I've never seen a "Mens "sign.

I agree that Ford is a little top heavy...a dangerous center of gravity on that load.
I'm surprised Steve, hasn't commented on that Sunoco station. Cardboard topper's over the globes.
Yeah the DOT would have a field day with that guy today.
This service station was located across the street from the "Playland" Amusement Park in Ocean Beach/San Francisco...

Cool Old Picture
Love the train in the background!!
Long Beach Calif.
Picked up this copy off of ebay... Very early Filling Station, location unknown:

(isn't the horse shoe above the door, suppose to be turned up... so the "luck doesn't run out"? ....
here is a guess; maybe the owner had been a livery Stable owner/farrier; before the "Horseless Carriage" put him out of business and therefore... his luck as he saw it... had run out??? .... always a back story behind old photos!)
The Sun Oil Co.
Hauling logs in the UP of Michigan.
Dave
fun thread!
my great grandfather's filling station next to their house in Thomas, WV. still own the buildings, all the signs and the window glass is gone. Sadly the filling station is crumbling and will be demoed next month.

Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing these are late 1930s.

Found another shot of this St. Louis station...
could you imagine what the mrs would say if you came home dragging THAT sign with you?? would probably be a funeral here...
...but honey, wait until you see it lit up!
Yeah, that would be a hard purchase to hide. Wonder what that monster would be worth today?
Fantastic Historical photographs. Thank you all for taking the time to post all of these.
Not the best, but still cool pic with early Mobil truck door sign.
And the Kodak sign in the background is cool!!
Raise the ceiling in the bedroom and put it over the bed.
Here is one from 1925.
The Shell Oil Terminal, Gore bay Sydney Australia.
Here's a good one. I spy a pyramid of money in the front window. Does anyone else see what I'm talking about?
I bet this was a colorful scene!!

WOW!! That Nugrape truck in that Texaco picture is insane!!! I would love to have that right now!! Are those solid rubber tires??
Came across this Sunoco station on google. I like how clear the photo is. It's like you're there. Love the Firestone lollipop in the backround and the huge Locomotive coming full speed!
It would be awesome to do then and now pictures of that SUNOCO picture. Be cool to find out where that was taken at
Grizzly station...
eBay # 351183172659
Nice Tokheim 36B pumps...those look like glass tops.
I spent several moments trying to figure out if that was a neon clock in the garage bay...only to realize it was a rear mounted spare tire on a car up on the hoist.
1st picture:
DX station in Peoria, IL... guessing this was previously a Sweney branded station before branding to DX in 1954.

Best Amoco sign ever!!!
Nice Post! The little scrolled curb sign beside it explains why the post is so fancy. George WASHINGTON had previously visited this site in 1791.
Look at that column and those light fixtures!!! I would love to see it from another angle!
Damn!! They just dont make 'em like that any more!!
Great Red Indian
Jimmy Darou, paralyzed jockey, owned this service station, 1938

Great photo , a lot of good reference pieces.
I like the " Terms Cash" signs

Cool station & cool cars.
From a different angle
Wow! What a station!!
From the lights, to the pumps, to the building, to that incredible main sign..... What an incredible station!!!
It's all awesome. Especially the sign.
I'd love to find one of those.

Doesn't get much stranger, or cooler than this!!
Anyone know if there is a restored one of these rolling around anywhere?
More visibles under a canopy with no globes on the west coast...that is why they are so hard to find...
Now that is a cool Diamond T..
http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/...-of-the-future/I don't think there's any survivors ?
A Friend had 2-1939 Dodge Airflows with the Garwood Tanker, same as Henry Ford museum. He sold them and they're being restored by another collector.
I heard several years ago there is one in a private collection in Detroit. I did not hear who had it though, it would be great to know though, I would love to see it in person.

Received this one today and thought I would share:

G.H. Schwieger's Station in Los Angeles;
looks like somebody had already got the sign out front of the station...
...
Not going to find them this old every day!
Man, what I wouldn't do to have the box off of that wagon!!
This picture really blows some holes in some of what I thought i might now. This shows that the actual "SUNOCO" name goes way back. I still have a lot to learn!!!
wow!!!! you are right ..that is the earliest picture of Sunoco I have ever seen....gota love it...
Interesting on the red hat station that it appears they cut a notch in the header beam to be able & have a globe on that front visible which appears to be a roman column.
Yep... larger photo of that Red Hat station can be found here... http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth52445/m1/1/
There is a seller on ebay- chevyllme, that is selling copies of it. He prints and sells photos he finds on the internet = douche bag.

Cool!! I now know what I'm going to be at the Oldgas Halloween party!!!
Great old pic for sure!!
Steve, you are going as a "bored kid in a tire"?
Flood in a neighboring town in 1950.
Keeping with the flooding theme...this one from Montreal, not sure of the date however.
Steve, you are going as a "bored kid in a tire"?

I smell trade make infringement here....wonder what the Fisk Tire Boy would have to say about the "board kid in the tire"? Cool pic.
A sad (for me anyway) sign of the times & end of an era. B/A comes down & Gulf goes up!
Mobil
That Mobil pic is fantastic!
I remember a discussion once before about these pumps with this globe lens type insert. I assume these lit up?
Thought this was neat...

Granite City, Illinois. Milwaukee 38 curb pump in the center of the photo.
You can see the reflection of the globe in the window. I dont recognize them. Anyone have any guesses/thoughts as to what brand the lenses advertise??
I like how the Mobil station from the late 50's is repurposing the old tombstone sign.
1958
Found this on a local historic site. About 4 miles from me. There is a Sunoco there today.
JR, if I am not mistaken the last Gilmore Station in SW WA, was in Chehalis. Not sure that the Station is still there? But it was, approx. 20 years ago... There was a little plaque on one of the canopy supports, put up by the Station Owner....
There is/was a story; That the Owner of the Gilmore Station was not pleased with the merger and that subsequent Station Owners kept the plaque on the support, in remembrance... (as I said, it is a story and I have no way of knowing if it is/was true or not.... If true, I can relate... After almost 50 years... I am still upset about Tidewater selling out to Phillips 66)
Old Standard Crown pump in background
3 Romans
Wish pic was better
unfortunately this picture stinks. At lease you can see the main signage pretty good. But I had to post it cuz you don't see vintage pics of this brand all that often.
"Speedway 79" becomes "Marathon" when it was bought up in 1959.

Cool pictures never seen a globe holder like that one at the Union station on the middle pump
One of my favorite gas station photo's EVER! Always searching for information as to how I could find the original copy. No luck yet, maybe in my lifetime I can find it.

Found this on the web...WOW.
Just picked up this copy:
I have to admit, Gulf really knows how to put on a show!!
Great looking set up right here!!!
Great pumps, wish I had one.
Some of you folks might remember all the Texaco signs I was finding awhile back. This photo was taken the day all the signs, cans, etc arrived by plane. If you happen to have one of my signs it rode in on this plane way back when. Always good to add history with an item.
The Socony station I've shown before but this photo is from a different angle.

Jeremy,Thanks for posting.Where have you been?
Robert ,he be a hidin on anutha site ...............
Well I declare!
Ed you following me?lol Haven't been hiding..more like lurking...been using that "F" word again. Oldgas is the only petro site I'm a member of other than a facebook group & I only posted two items over there. Not really a fan of facebook, But there is alot of good info to be found on it. Sorry to say I haven't had much other than black n white photos to share. I did find an early Standard Oil/Polarine sign, But its rough...was tin not porcelain. Haven't found much of anything good in awhile now.
Love that Socony Service sign in that pic!
Not sure if this pic is authentic or not.
Kinda looks like a modern day museum of sorts.
Yeah I think it is a museum as well. Look at the rust and condition of the pumps.
Plus they wouldn't have used the white porcelain tanker letters on the front of the station. IMO, would have been red letters with Texaco stars.
That picture is in one of the earlier books. It is, indeed (or was) an operational station at the time that picture was taken. As I remember it, the old guy had been running it for eons.
cool classic texaco photo ...
I don't where this picture came from but thought someone here might know what year.
Dad kickin it back beside the station around 1967. It's blurry but check out the brown uniform.
The orange building behind him is the old ice block house.
This is a better picture of the station.

Great pictures of Gulf Bath signs!!

Wow!! Now there's a dandy!!!
And the pump aint bad either!!
Great old pic of what I believe is a Texaco stain glass globe in white metal frame.
Please correct me if incorrect.
A beautiful Cities 60 with a beautiful lady walking by.
And great globes.
Actually cropped this out of the background of another pic that is why it's not the best quality.
GREAT pic of the spinning Pennzoil sign with really cool curved bonded sign. Would love to see this in person.
.
At the bottom of Page 50, what a sweet photo of a nice Mobil station w/ Peggy and a killer big block Chevrolet El Camino. Doesn't get much better then that!
Mike
.
Steve, really cool photo! There's enough signs in that one picture to start a killer sign collection...not to single out the 2 double sided Kelly Tires signs.
Why would the opening for the gas tank be in the VW trunk? (previous page) Or do you think it's just a staged picture with the female gas station attendants? Not that I remember where it was--at the time my Mom's friend had one, my sister and I were small enough that we loved riding in the small space behind the back seats.

That's where they were placed. The funnier thing in the photo is the guy in the back with the radiator can.
( Air Cooled )
Great pic of old Associated truck.
And check out the tire mobile to the left there. Crazy! Wonder what became of that contraption.

Another Associated truck. Is that long sign with the man porcelain? Great pic of door sign.

Wonder if the driver got ribbed for that truck sign...LOL

Had this picture given to me by a older individual . I tried to get a clear pic but couldn't. It is a Sinclair station that was and still is the chevy dealer in Fredericktown mo . This was taken in the mid 1930s from what I was told . That's 48" Sinclair oils sign on the right , chevy sign of some sort on the roof and a larger HC on the left. Think of how many little towns in america had these forgotten places . No wonder this stuff still turns up if you think of the decades that have passed and all the other little towns in america that had the same stuff.

Ole Floyd has it going on. 6 Gals for only a buck! Must be some real lookers.

Nice Sinclair Credit sign and great signs in background.

I sure wish I could get some of these pics bigger and clearer.

Where was the "Irving Auto Co." ??? I have never heard of this company and I can't find any info on Google. Is this an old Irving Gasoline station?
Steve,Great pics. Why do we like this old stuff? The old advertising was made to stand the test of time and the elements.
Not sure what brand this is.
Picture was titled, Margaret Callahan 1936. An actress maybe?
Bet that jockey wouldnt of believed what that nozzle in his hand would be worth some day.
Great Fisk Flange sign.
Again, to bad can't post a little bigger.
1941
Killer photos Steve.
I have no idea where you find all of these, but keep them coming.
What a snapshot in time.
Thanks, Mike
Steve, love the Schwing Station. Different connotation today with that word!
No problem Mike. Sometimes when I first get up in the morning and the brain is not quite up yet, I grab a coffee and just run through some picture archives. Whenever I can find them.
I'm sure a lot of these have been seen by many before, but I like the old pics, so I post some for those who have not seen them.
Yah, Fred, I thought the same thing when I saw that.
Not sure if this ones been posted before. It looks familiar. I just love the color and the Credit sign.
Looking at old pictures at work of some of the early tractor models the company produced... and noticed a 'little' something in the background!
1967 Chevelle @ PHILLIPS 66 station.
396, getting it ready for the Friday street racing scene. Sweet!!

I sure wish this was more clear in the area of that sign on the oil tank!!!!

I imagine it says Texaco Marine Lubricants...
Yes, I realize that Nicole, it's just there has been many a conversation about the authenticity of different versions of this sign, and here is an actual picture of one. Although unfortunately, this picture does not have the detail needed to help make any kind of case for the signs.
Those Wayne pump photos from Knoxville, Tenessee are great! But, to me, the pumps look small; could they be scaled down versions for the salesroom? Wouldn't that be fun to find!
They just look small, compared to the building size/scale. The 60 would fit in the doorway (likely 7')...
Any idea of date on knoxville pics? Wifes family is from knoxville
Kind of interesting on the photo with all the old road signs on the wall, (the one warning of dangerous slow children) that apparently the Automobile Club of Southern California reached far throughout the southwest. The Lincoln Highway sign would have been posted in Nevada near the Utah state line and the sign above and to the right of that would have been hung in southwestern New Mexico. A lot of these would have been tough to read and you'd probably have to stop to read the directional signs.

My grandfather's gas station 1938 in Wynot, Nebraska. My grandfather, Bernard A. Tramp, is wearing the service cap with my grandmother next to him.

My grandfather, Bernard A. Tramp, around 1940 with his tanker.
B.A. Tramp Oil from an aerial view early 1950 and ground view of station later in 1954. South Yankton, Nebraska along Highway 81 before crossing the Missouri bridge into Yankton, SD.
You can just make out the Deep Rock sign hanging by the diesel fuel islands to the north of station.

Great pictures Terry,
Do you know if any of the buildings are still standing?
Thank you Nicole but unfortunately not. My grandfather's gas station in S. Yankton was demolished to make room for the new gas station my father built which still remains their today. Our family no longer owns the business. All I have now are the memories and the pictures that I can find.
Neat old garage .
Love those old buildings with the great painted signs . With the new digital billboards sign painters have gone like the phone booth .
Damn kids broke another globe lens Joe!

1936 Fort Peck, Montana
Cool pictures I really like the Montana one.
Looks like one of the temporary shanty towns that sprung up around Fort Peck during the construction of the Fort Peck dam. I am guessing that because most of the people living there were bachelors, the house with all the clothes lines, was someone who took in laundry. That or someone with a BIG family. When you see a pic like that, you can't help wonder what it was like to live there.
I really like that last one Steve. Did you ever see "Skippy"? Talking about his beloved Shanty town.---"Ain't it elegant?"
.
Wow!! Anyone have a Pure sign like that in their yard?
.. ...
What's with the miniature main sign??
Zoning/aesthetic requirements for the town? Do you know where it is?

Here's something you don't see often. A radiator cover in action.
This is just bada$$. Had to post!
.
Some of you may have some of these cans.
Great picture of the Buick, Had some of those years, and wish I still did.
Any idea what this is all about?
Looks to be a gas station along the Great North Road that ran from Cape Town to Cairo, somewhere between the towns of Kasame and Livingston in Zambia. Before the time of more modern mileage signs no doubt, for just a tourist/traveler interest as we have/had in the U.S.
Unusual gas pumps or lubsters (back when cars went through a lot of oil, dripping behind them on the road?). I don't know of course because I have misplaced my pump book.
Whoops! Smoketree beat me to it!
I guess I should have been more specific. What's with the "Pegasus"? An early African Mobil station?
The pumps are French manufactured Satam's . I'll assume Pegasus was Mobil Oil LTD ........................
Steve... that's here in outback Australia. .. Chariot pump

Mobiloil cabinet in the background.

Here is a really cool old pic I bought at a roadside junk store over the weekend. I have no idea where this station is, but the plates on the car are 1935 Illinois plates. I thought the pagoda gas station design was cool and the three Texaco visibles in the background look awesome. Nice porcelain thermometer and public telephone signs too! If anyone knows what type of car this is, who this guy might be or where this station was located I'd love to get more info. This car is totally decked out - I think he added every add-on available from the dealer!
BrianH
Holy moly--Is that a cow catcher in the front? What ever he hits, that bar will keep it there for sure.
I see the lion in the background--maybe a station in Hong Kong? I was 10 when we stopped by Hong Kong as part of a round the world trip. Those temples with the pagoda roofs and so many lions were one of the few things I remember about it. The one in my post is metal while the one at the gas station appears to be concrete or stone.
Hong Kong was still a British colony back then...
Or it could be a gas station in a China Town in some U.S. city.
Is the photo in a frame or holder of some kind? The info may be written on the back, but first make sure the photo is not stuck in the holder. Carefully try to peel a corner. If the photo is leaving stuff behind, stop and just enjoy it as is.
Hi Nicole,
I was thinking the Chinatown district in Chicago when I first saw this photo. However, there were several other pagoda-style stations built in other places so I don't know. I put the pic in the frame. There was no info written on the back of the photo unfortunately.
BrianH
The car is a circa 1933 Auburn , highly customized.
Looks like he ran out of accessories to add on.
Maybe the founder of JC Whitney? lol
Be interesting to know the background.
Wonder, what those curb signs are. Signs look to be identical on both. Second one is on the Island by the pumps between the cars.
Wonder, what those curb signs are. Signs look to be identical on both. Second one is on the Island by the pumps between the cars.
curb signs appear too have a propeller at base of signs with wings above that? maybe Johnson? .. ...
I love those late 20's and early 30's cars. When I was a kid growing up on the farm, my Dad had a 31 beat-up Buick that he hauled bags of feed in & on the outside front fenders! One time he took the back seat out and hauled calves to market!
That station was only a few miles from my shop, in Louisville....
Anyone hear of a station called Benzol Gas?

Nice pictures of stations that I have not seen before , and I have thousands saved . Thanks for posting .
Great pictures thanks for posting.
Sure happy to do it , I just wish I new how to do the picture stuff better , they are so much more clear when I have them on my computer screen . Oh well I will figure it out someday .
How about this a couple of abandoned Wayne 50s back in the day, with globes.

Man oh man, those Wayne 50's are a beautiful sight!
Gene Here is a blowup of the car . I hope this helps identify the year of that car , The license plates are 1935 on all of the cars . Thanks Peter
Yes Peter, that did it. It is a 1935 Buick Cabriolet. They made 3 models with the suicide doors. Total of all 3, only 291 made. 1 with conventional doors. 933 made. This is the car I wish I could afford. Thank You so much Peter, Gene
Happy to help Gene . I never would have noticed that car if you hadn't have asked but it is a really cool looking automobile. Peter
peter do you have any pictures that show a good image of the globes being used on any other photo's? thx
Peter,
If you get a scanner, most scanners let you scan at a smaller size.
Your photos are really good though for detail. If you want to figure out about squaring them better, keep in mind that the larger side of the resulting image is what the camera is closest to. In other words you are not holding your camera parallel to what you are photographing.
You should be able to see it through the view finder. If the top of the old photo looks smaller than the bottom, it means that the camera is closer to that side. You need to get above the center of the photograph to level it out. A tripod can help you with this. You can see that the lens is parallel by stepping back from your set up before you take the overhead photo. And you should see the same in the viewfinder or screen. Same goes for one side bigger than the other. Your camera is more to one side than centered.
To help explain what is happening: When I take a photo of one of my paintings, I lean the painting on the wall of my porch out of the sun, so I get the light reflected from the sky. When I see in my viewfinder that the top is bigger than the bottom, I know I have to lean the picture even more so the top recedes. That or I have to move the camera lower so it's 'closer' to the middle of the painting and not the top.
Anyway nice photo reproductions!
Thanks Nicole , I will follow your instructions next time , and I want to get a more up to date camera . Have a good day . Peter

And who is the masked fella lurking in the bottom picture ?

The masked man was the Cisco Kid. I would go to the Saturday morning movies serials in the 40's and early 50's. Must have been a promotion of some sort at the station, Mitch
To the best of my memory the Cisco kid did not wear a mask and I thing he wore a more traditional sombrero. Won't be the first time I have been wrong.
Zorro maybe? and I assume yea it was a Phillips 76 promotion. But can you imagine a character like that stepping out fro behind a gas pump like that today... He'd probably get shot

Any chance of making this thread a sticky?

Hi all, I recently bought a bunch of old gas stuff from an old oil jobber. He threw in some old pictures that he displayed proudly in his office. These six pictures are not originals, they are from a calendar that was made long before the internet. I did not thumb through the 36 pages of old pics here, so they might be in this thread somewhere, but then again maybe not since they are from a real old calendar. Either way here they are, I hope you enjoy them....
The third pic is just a sketch, but I threw it in anyway.

Three more pics from the ol jobber. My favorite three of the six pics... Of special note, which is cool to me, is all the globes and the airplane in the second picture, and the Horse Shoe Tires and painted Red Crown signs in the third picture, among numerous other cool things.
Enjoy,
Steve

This display of globes was posted above the entrance of the Ostermans Garage in Stockholm, Sweden.
Ostermans sold Fords and had the most fancy sales room in Stockholm called the "Marble Halls". After Ford moved out, the Marble Halls used to host Swedens first "Hot Rod Show" in 1968 and onwards.
Tha garage below the Marble Halls also had a gas station selling all those brands of gas.
I see that I now have managed to collect all globes in the display :-)

Another Farmall near a pump
Bath, Illinois,
So disheartening to think most of these pumps, signs and related stuff wound up in the dump, crushed and destroyed. If I could only go back, LOL. I recall being around this old stuff everyday when I worked for my Dad. He owned 2 Texaco's and a Gulf station. Never thought anything about this stuff then. Boy, I sure do now.

Great pics! Keep them coming.
Over the last two days I've been glued to my laptop checking out all 121 pages of this thread. Tons and tons of great photos! Alas, I only saw a single Husky image (of just the sign in the background) so I thought I'd remedy the situation with this photo.
On a different note, the Fish Inn photos on page 13 brought back good memories. I have family in the Silver Valley of northern Idaho, and dropping into the Fish Inn to have a beer (it was just a tavern at that time, 80's-90's) was a treat. The structure was located right at the intersection of Interstate 90 (old US 10) and State Route 3, at the east end of Fourth of July Pass. Sadly, it burned down in 1996.
Cody Wyoming, I used to fuel up there every time I went elk hunting. My brother lived 20 miles from there. No longer there now the site of a Walgreens. Mitch

I live in Green Bay WI but last December I worked in Salina KS on a project. In town was this old gas station on one of the main streets. It just begs to be taken over as a home, with a filling station theme. It would be cool to own a property like this for my home and motorcycle shop/garage. Can't you just see the colors of a classic Texaco style station, or Gulf, or just about any classic filling station colors applied to this classic shape. Shame to see it just sitting there, probably just waiting on demolition.

Does anybody know where the Pontiac, and buick dealership picture is from? city, state? Awesome picture public enemy!
Here is the back story on the picture. google maps shows the building still there. On December 30, 1944 W.L. Baughan and Vernon Frick joined into partnership with W.C. Burrell in his automobile business and repair shop located across N. Broad Street from the present Transylvania County Library. In November 1948 Frick sold his share to Baughan. Burrell and Baughan then incorporated the business as Goodwill Motor Company. Frick built a new building and opened a Buick dealership beside Goodwill Motors in June 1949. Frick later purchased Goodwill Motors as well. When Frick retired, due to health reasons, he sold the business to three of his employees. Goodwill Motor Company closed in 1985.
In addition to selling new cars, all three dealerships sold used cars, had service, repair and body shops, painted cars, and operated a full service filling station.
Photographs and information for this column are provided by the Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room, Transylvania County Library.

Brian,
Cool pics of Michigan Mobil White Star stations. I noticed one picture says Sage Lake. As you know, I have four of those signs. I bought one in Sage Lake!!!! I sure would love to know if my sign was the one in the picture. That would be incredible, but almost impossible to figure out. I can only assume at this point.
I see a few spots (unsure if they are chips or just dirt and cobwebs). I gotta go look at mine now.

Thanks for posting.

Who knows.....other than it could be any number of them that I know are out there as the story behind mine is it was one of 6 or 8 found buried in a stack at a little bulk plant in Hale years ago. A neat story to go along with nice signs!

Yeah that place had eye appeal Gasman no matter how you cut it!

Eye candy everywhere when we look at it today.
Maybe a member will let us know if they've ever seen one of the Macmillan signs.
Darin
I am pretty sure that is a McMillan gas station in California. Conoco did not have any gas stations in California (in that time period), but they sold motor oil at gas stations of other brands....such as this one. I often see a photo of the gas station with a Conoco triangle hanging at some other brand's station. You can see a Kendall oil and Quaker state oil sign as well as the Conoco (oil) sign in this photo.
By the way, that is the first Tokheim 36 (ADC) display pump that I have seen. Very cool!
Andy
Here is another example of a gas station brand that also sells Conoco motor oil. This is also in California (Los Angeles)....a Shell station selling Conoco motor oil, showing the Conoco triangle.
Andy
Cool White Star signs in that last pic. Never seen one that says gas and oil on the bottom. I think a similar sign was in a different thread a while back.
Here is a couple of enlarged pictures of the station Steve . Have a good weekend

Holy cow, look at that globe too!! This is all new White Star stuff to me. That's the first I've ever seen it spelled "Starlene." White Star is one of my favorites, being from Michigan and all. I almost wonder if they were hand painted by the station owner and not 'mass' produced. It looks like the lettering is slightly different on the two next to each other. There are several other hand painted advertisements in this photo, so it could be a possibility. Probably impossible to find those signs, but great picture, thanks for sharing Peter.
.. ...
.. ...
Steve I'm thinking that is not White Star of Michigan. I noticed a couple other pictures Peter posted that had this company's stations pictured. At first I was like oh, these must be from the Michigan/Ohio area but if you notice they sell Vico products from Utah, which is Peter's area. I don't think those products were ever sold here in Michigan. In the close up you can also see a "Sphynx Motor Oils" sign. I am not familiar with this company or where it was located either, but what a sign. Also, the signs say "Starlene" where the Michigan based White Star signs said "Staroline" or "Staroleum". I personally was not aware of another White Star company but evidently there must have been a regional company of the same name in Utah at one time. Purely speculation on my own part.....if anyone knows otherwise please enlighten us!

Darin
.. ...
Looking at that Star Oil picture, imo I think that the Starlene and Sphynx are painted on the building like the writing and not separate signs.
All these pictures that I post are stations that were here in Utah at one time . I can't provide any information about the White star brand . I have never found anything from this company or know of anyone that has but I would love to find something . I've got pictures of 2 different White Star stations . Here is a blowup of the second one which was down in Sugarhouse. Thanks for the feedback . Peter
Here is the full picture.
Here is another Conoco station in Utah. This is Kaysville, UT at 33 S. Main. It is the Howard Cloward Conoco station and this is late 1956 when Conoco rebuilt this station. The new Tokheim 300 pumps are in, but the station hasn't been resurfaced yet.

Darin, You are exactly right, that would make a lot more sense. Especially since Peter's picture's are from that area (and Peter confirmed above). Which explains the different spelling too. Good call on spotting the Vico, as evidence too. I wasn't even thinking Utah, I just got excited when I saw White Star

, as White Star of Michigan is my favorite brand... LOL A lot of similarities. Still very cool stuff that Peter posted. So that makes at least three different White Star Brands that I know of (Detroit, Indianapolis and Utah). Great pics Peter... thanks for posting all of these.

There was a large and similar Stinker sign in Idaho Falls on the east side of the I-15 and man lit up it was pretty cool. Then one year it disappeared probably around 2012ish. There is a Stinker convenience store there on the west side but they sell Sinclair Gas and have a McDonalds attached. Evolution in the gas and convenience store world

There used to be a Stinker station in Wells Nv. A friend of mine was going through there about 10 yrs ago and told me they had taken down the sign and it was leaning against the back of the station. With work and all i couldnt get that way for about 5 months and by then the whole station was gone! Oh well dont have anywhere that i could put it up anyway.........probly went to a dump somewhere! Shame.....

So was the Culmers company taken over by Utah Oil or what's the relationship there Peter???
LOL they painted half the power pole to blend in with the station...
Hello Kim . Good question, I don't know much about the relationship between Utah oil refining company and the Culmers company other than they were very close back in the 20s and 30s , Culmers stations sold pep 88 gasoline and Vico motor oil as well as there own brand of oils and grease's .Then it was like Culmers dissappeared from the scene . The cans are really hard to find I only have 1 five gallon square can and a road map , a few other guys got some and I'm willing to bet you have a few . Have a great weekend
I've shown this picture before but here is a blowup of the Wayne 490 and 492 Romans . I can only dream of finding a 490.

Sweet!! Wonder if Ric has that Minuteman??
I have that exact sign on top of the building, I found in Fairplay Colorado in the 90's. First picture I have ever seen of it. Thanks
Nice. My sign had the owner's name at the bottom as well. I think I took it off, but still have it of course. Great pictures of that sign. Neat to know it was a production sign made for all stations. Thank you.
Coltex: What was the owner's name? And do you know if the station was in Fairplay, or was it somewhere else? The only photo I have of Fairplay is this one, a zoomed in view of a photo from the Denver Library online archive. You can see the Conoco sign, but it isn't the older one that you have. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about that particular station, such as location or owner.
The last name was "Teeter". I will get a picture this next week and PM you.

Another requested blowup picture for Gene .
Thank You Peter! This is a very rare car! A 1916 thru 1919 Liberty. In 1920 the porcelain emblem had gold around it, flowing the same shape. Liberty was very short lived company from 1916 thru 1924. They had an inline 6. Actually the 1924 models were actually a 1923 car. Late in 1923 Columbia Motor Car Co. purchased them. Just thought you old gassers would like to know. Gene

Its no wonder the west coast globes are so hard to find, its because most stations never had them. The above picture is a perfect example. Four common Boyle Daytons or whatever they are and not a globe
on any of them. When you see pictures I bet 80% or better of stations on the coast had no globes, either because the station had a low canopy and globes wouldn't fit on the visibles or they
just used pumps similar to ones here that never even had globe holders
Great observation Kim. It looks like in the last 10 pictures of stations posted here (where you can see pumps), it appears that approximately 8 of them have pumps without globes !! And going back more pictures, several more stations don’t have globes either (however, some are due to canopy height.)
Maybe California had strict laws even then that you couldn't waste the energy of a lightbulb lighting a globe, so no globes lol!

I had to research MetroPetro's post, because I like White Star stuff, and other Michigan Companies. That plant was in Detroit, Michigan.
I found a before and after picture of the same complex (in 2003).....

I wonder if that is one of the White Star signs I own?? Sadly, It would be just about the only thing left from that picture

The Old Lincoln plant was located at Warren & Livernois in Detroit. After Ford built the "New" plant in Wixom it was sold to Detroit Edison and became the Warren Service Center which it still is today. I work for DTE/Detroit Edison and have to go there quite frequently. A very small portion of the old assembly plant still exists and is used as Maintenance and Fabrication Shops. While the large office building shown in that picture is gone, a smaller office building to the right of that main Admin building also still exists, but everyone has been moved out of it and it is scheduled to be demolished soon. If you know where to look and what to look for, you can still see some traces of the Ford heritage with the existing buildings.

I was interested to see in Gilmore's photo of the Socony-Vacuum General station the small Pegasus sign attached to the brick building near the driveway. I sure wish I knew what material it was made of. I've seen the small reproduction/fantasy signs of the same design on Ebay for a few years now, but was not aware that there was an original sign of similar design back in the day. That's why it's so great to study these old station photos, you see items you were not aware existed. It boggles my mind sometimes to see all of the advertising in one photo and say to myself, there's $500...there's a $2500 sign today, haha.
Darin

OLD SHELL AUDUBON IOWA-30'S

I am not a fan of "colorized" black and white photos at all. I think it is a disservice to history for someone to speculate what things may have looked like back when.
That being said, I post this photo to show the styling of the Shell station.

Here is a link to the Sun-God being refueled in the air:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/8091770474/in/photostream/Thanks to Randy for putting up that great picture. This article is taken from the Fairchild Air Force Base website.
Fairchild is just west of Spokane.
FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Long before there was an air refueling wing in this area -- long before there was even an Air Force Base here -- the Spokane, Wash., community was helping to pioneer the art and science of mid-air refuelings. In fact, Spokane will forever be known for one particularly significant air refueling mission that occurred 80 years ago. During a 5-day period in August 1929, a Buhl CA-6 aircraft, now known as the Spokane Sun-God, became the first airplane to make a non-stop transcontinental round-trip flight--a flight that required 11 mid-air refuelings.
The historic mission had a number of sponsors, including the National Air Derby Association, Texaco, and many Spokane citizens and businessmen. The Spokane Sun-God departed Felts Field, Spokane, Aug. 15, 1929, with two pilots onboard--Nick Mamer and Art Walker. The pilots were to fly south to San Francisco, Calif., and begin their eastward trek to New York before heading home to Spokane.
Tankers would meet the Spokane Sun-God at predetermined points along the route. To accomplish the refueling, the tanker pilots would lower a hose while flying over the Sun-God. Mamer and Walker positioned the hose nozzle into their tanks where the fuel gravitationally flowed; all the while the two aircraft flew in "piggyback" formation.
The air refueling locations had to be arranged beforehand, primarily because there was no established air-to-ground radio communication during this time. To counter unexpected problems during the mission, the Sun-God pilots had to drop notes to people on the ground or tie messages to the end of the refueling hose.
On Aug. 18, 1929, after a number of setbacks along the way, the Sun-God pilots arrived over Roosevelt Field in New York, met by hundreds of planes that flew up to welcome them. The return trip to Spokane was hampered by bad weather in Pennsylvania and intense smoke from forest fires in Montana. The smoke was so thick near Miles City, Mont., it nearly blinded the pilots. To make matters worse, the Sun-God began to develop engine problems and the pilots began to feel they may not make it back to Spokane.
But Mamer and Walker did not give up. Although Miles City was not a scheduled refueling site, the pilots dropped a note to the residents asking if they could figure out a way to refuel them in flight. The response was five-gallon milk cans from a local creamery. Filled with fuel, the cans were lowered one at a time from another aircraft using detachable rope slings. The pilots then flew low over the Yellowstone River and tossed the empty cans into the water, where a boy in a rowboat picked them up as they floated by a bridge in Miles City.
At 2 p.m., Aug. 20, 1929, the Spokane Sun-God arrived over Felts Field, where 10,000 spectators formed to welcome home the record-setting pilots. When the aircraft finally touched down, it had flown for 120 hours and 10,000 air miles and had set a world record for a non-stop flight of 7,200 point-to-point miles.
Spokane received significant national attention for helping sponsor this historic flight. The city's support, along with the thorough flight planning and the tenacity of the two pilots, earned the credit for the success of this record-setting mission, a record that would stand for many years.
Yes, it seems that Spokane was destined to have an air refueling wing in its backyard. Eighty years after the Sun-God mission, the Spokane community is still a strong supporter of the nation's air refueling mission.

My great grandfathers 2 esso station he build this one with my grandfather from the ground up every brick ! Original one was in same place but was facing 180 degrees in other direction they replicated the main road so my great grandfather relocated the front of the garage to meet up with the new road. This picture from what my dad says is in 1948/49? He’s not 100 percent sure ! I Remember a little of the garage as a kid very little it was sold in 1980 as a Exxon station ! Unfortunately the building no longer exist 😩but thought I’d share the memory with you all .
A few shots of Pal's Diner when it was on State Route 17 south in Mahwah, NJ. Diner was transported to Michigan and reopened there.
Always looking for other photos of Pal's, and especially photos of my dads Shell station which was across the road on northbound side.

Cool photo Chris. Do you have anything from that building?
All we have is a map ! That has the garage stamp on it !
A reciept my dad wrote in 1962 for a customers oil change I framed it and it’s at his house . My sister has a calendar from the 1960s that hung in garage and we have some of the esso tiger tea / coffee cups that were sold and given away at garage and the main piece I have in my closet is my grandfathers original service station jacket ! Witch wasn’t ever found until the 1990s when the house he use to live in was being remodeled and the contractor found it way back in a corner of a closet that was under a stairwell . He new who had to have it so he went to my dads house and told my dad I think this should be in your hands ! It had to of been in that closet over 25 years least in that house . â¤ï¸
Contractor was a decent guy, glad you got it.
Do you know where in Michigan that diner ended up?
American sta. .. ...
Pal's operated in Grand Rapids as a diner for years. A new owner changed the name to Dan's and changed the menu, then went out of business last year during the government shut down restrictions put on businesses. It was bought by and moved to the Harley dealer in Muskegon to be put on display. Unknown if it will ever be operated as a diner again.
ah ok. I was wondering if that might have been the diner on the grounds of the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan.

The picture with the attendant discarding the Velvet cans has the oldest Speedway patches on his shirt & hat that I have ever seen.
It looks like the patches say "Speedway 70" but the car looks to be from the 1950's.
Before Speedway 79 & Speedway 77, Speedway was marketed as Speedway 70.
Super neat picture that I have never seen before !!

MetroPetro : Another great picture of a Pure station in Lansing or East Lansing, Michigan near the junction of M-43 & US-16 with a set of double tankers making a delivery.
My MDOT picture has a converted Pure to Leonard station in Lansing near the junction of M-78, US-27, & M-43.
These Pure stations with the columns were most likely former Hi-Speed stations.

Randy, reminds me of many years ago, delivering a load to a Bay Area Shell station, when i came up to it the place was full of fireman, one pump on the ground.A driver was filling his vehicle and pulled off with the nozzle in the tank. That was prior to break away fittings on the hoses--so took the pump with him for a short distance. The Fireman suggested i keep on trucking, not unloading here, load diverted to another station.

Boy that car is rad. Front air intake snorkels, side pipes 12 cylinders?, must be huge CID, and rear chain direct drive or is that a braking system?
Either way it's Kuhl. And the driver looks like he has an attitude!

One of my favorite threads here. I enjoy looking at how our "stuff" was originally used, displayed, etc whether it be pumps, signs, cans, uniforms, and the rest; the vehicles; the architecture; the people; places I have been in my travels; and how America was in the last 125 or so years.
Here's to seeing many more photos. Thank you to everyone that posts here!
