What is a UPRR barrel used for ? Have never seen one before.
Posted By: SandPCollector Re: NON-PETRO "BUYS OF THE MONTH!" - APRIL 2015 - Sat Apr 04 2015 12:12 PM
UPRR is most likely Union Pacific Rail Road. It was probably filled (note the large hole) a screw plug inserted and then put on some stand laying on its side and drained through the smaller spigot. I couldn't tell you what it held, it could be any type of liquid from water to oil, railroads used a multitude of items back in the day as they were one of the largest industries in the country.

Unloaded my signs from the Walker sale today. It was pretty tough going there for a guy that has to work for his money.
The plumbing sign has a beautiful green with white letters color under that ***** yellow and black. The Howard Johnson's lamplighter is a pretty rare sign, I've been looking for one for ten years, finally got it.

The Union Pacific Barrel was most likely used for bearing oil back in the days before we had sealed bearings AKA "journals" on the rail cars a worker called a Carman (we still have them) would walk the train lifting doors on the truck frame where the axle fit's under the truck and check the oil level and fill as needed.
I still have one of those barrel's down at my yard it has some oil left in it I would guess they were also used for any other lubricant needed such as motor oil, governor oil etc..

Here are some of the cans we used for these types of oil,

This was used to fill the journals

This was used for smaller areas inside the locomotive,

A few weeks ago a guy from work tells me about a pump, so last Monday I go to look at the pump. I spot this in the corner of the garage and I end up bringing it home. Four days later I go to a friends place in Manitoba to look at some gas stuff and another one in an old garage on a stand with the original tank on the floor. I guess I am collecting Mercury motors.

I like local items, and farm advertising. Couldn't let someone else take it home! Love the multiple locations and phone numbers! My town is Central City.

Many of us on here like local items, and many of us like whiskey. So I couldn't pass up a Whiskey Jug from my hometown! I've had a couple in the past, but not in the 1/2 gallon size or with the odd shoulder jug/bail handle combination. There were many different whiskey dealers in Central City many years ago.

Got this fantastic sign company advertising. It is an incredible work of art, reverse painted on glass with a brass frame, just a fantastic piece of sign company history.

Be careful where you put that repro sign. A local antique store had one outside on a raining day and it bubbled up. He said it was paper applied to steel.

I already found that out after a day in rain.

I dig BIG OLD PORCELAIN!!!
?1930s? SUPER DUPER HEAVY Porcelain Back Splash Panels/signs from a old drug store fountain counter! They are about a inch thick X 25 inches tall X a smeg over 22 feet in total between the 4. All are in 9-9+ cond with only one having been bent some.
I've had 6 wood, icecream cone backed counter stools for a while now and that is 1/2 the reason that I begged borrowed and did not steal to go get these last nite!
2 of the panels will go with the 6 stools and 2 will be apart of my own designed shop signage!
I've been hunting for a very long time for something like these so I can make a very cool sign for the Shoppe. These are over the moon beyond what I ever thought I would find for that!
