I agree Todd...tough situation. On one hand you have a knowledgeable seller that should have known they were original selling them as repros. I could and do see this happening on Ebay when a seller knows nothing about globes selling them as repros. I have been fortunate to buy 3 or 4 globes off Ebay as "repros" that were real.
On the other hand, I personally in this situation being that these were two reputable collectors/dealers in the hobby, would have thought the buyer would have said, "Hey Joe, you have these priced as repros, but they are originals. You might want to reprice them accordingly." At that point the very thankful seller would have more than likely said, "Thanks for the help Bob, I'll give you a deal on them for the help at $400, since they are and $800 set so we're both happy. Me that I didn't mistakenly sell them for $75, and you would have plenty of room on the resale." At least that's how I feel it should have went down! Darin

champlinman, why did you erase your story?
I had to SMH when you mentioned the well known staple in the hobby asked you,"is that $75 for the pair?"..As if $75 each was a deal breaker on these and he was going to walk away, that he later relisted for $800 on his own table. He does have his standards..

I saw this post before he backed off and said "never mind". You can't blame him for backing down. When you have only a few big time globe dealers you cant afford to call them out if you ever expect to buy or sell something through them. I heard this story at IG too. The original title of this post was "Ethics" It had to do with if you are a knowledgeable dealer and someone doesn't know what they have should you tell them. Seems some won't.
I won't comment on the story as I heard it at IG but I will say this. Over the last three weeks I have bought two gas pumps for over the asking price because I knew the sellers didn't know what they had. In one case it was $400 over asking price. In the other it was $600 over asking price. I still got a great deal and the sellers were very grateful for my honesty. And I know that if they ever have a neighbor or friend with a gas pump for sale they will recommend me for an honest opinion. I also know that someone will NEVER get a chance to sell an amazing globe collection.

So since it was a globe dealer... It's wrong? There are tons of people that buy and sell on here and Facebook that we all call pickers. Since one guy knows it's not a repop and buys it... His ethics are questioned? Sounds to me the guy selling it didn't know what he had and got mad because he lost a few bucks?
Many ways to look at this but I don't see the issue.
Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

I'm sorry the seller didn't get the actual value of the item he was selling---BUT--he should have done his homework BEFORE pricing it. I have sold a few items WAY UNDER THE MONEY, in the past, and I don't regret any of those sales as my pricing was reflective of my purchase price. I would assume the same has happened here and there should be no remorse. The reputation of the buyer should have no reflection on the transaction and should not be called into question unless there was erroneous information given to facilitate the purchase, and this was obviously not the situation. We all make mistakes in this hobby and at times we have to stand up and admit it. This is one of those times.

I thought that's why everybody has to go to Iowa early so they can buy cheap and sell high later. I don't no the other side of the story but I agree with what jarvis and Kevin are saying. It's not the buyers job to educate you no matter who they are.
Originals only for me. Always looking for Simpson oil, Super A, and MFA oil cans and globes. Shawn Morris

I agree with Kevin and John. It is a learning experience which the seller will not forget. Sad, but it is life and we've all been there. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I understand the seller did do his homework before pricing this, and was lead to believe it was indeed a reproduction, based coincidentally on what the buyer told him previously. And even if this wasn't the case,I hold those to a higher standard,(in any hobby),when they author a CD or book, which apparently has errors in it.

Interesting, NOT the first time I've heard that from people who came upon a globe and called the "professional" because they didn't know what they had.
