Auction estimate is $10,000 - $15,000 which is fine for a genuine example but this one (first photo)looks identical to one that was offered on ebay by a certain vendor in India (second photo). Third and fourth photos are of non-aviation real examples and the G in gasoline seems to be the biggest giveaway.

Does anyone believe the auction sign to be the real thing?

The first thing that I saw was the positioning of the diamond shapes at 10:00 and 2:00. The first and second pic shows the diamond perfectly plumd and straight. The third and fourth set show those turned slightly. Also the shell is different in all three but the first pic is the only one that is completely uniform from one side to the other. Still, these ore only differences between three signs, hard to tell without comparing in person or holding it in your hands. Even then you might not be able to tell.

Too many red flags. There are other repro/fantasy pieces in that auction too.

Gets kind of serious when you're talking the kind of money that an original could bring. I sure hope these bigger auction companies do their homework on their consignments!

I did contact the auctioneer and his response was that it is a real Canadian sign, and if the buyer can prove it is a fake then they will stand behind the item and refund the money.

Hmmm.

I've owned several of these signs and still have a 30" and never have I seen a white clam or mounting holes in this position.

Yeah I heard an auctioneer say the same up here one time. Publically stated that some signs were original some might not be, but that those who knew (their stuff) would know. Throwing the obligation on the unsuspecting bidders. Subsequently sold some fantasy signs for near 500 bucks that are available for 25-50.

Personally I won't trust what the auction house says. Talk is cheap and once money is in hand it gets real tough to pull it out of that hand. Fortunately I've not experienced that situation.

Maybe some guys from the great white north can shed some light on this sign.

junior 25 I know has owned a few of them . If he says its not right, you can bank on it . Sad that Showtime seemingly does not care about their reputation . This site has over 15000 registered members ,word will get around .

Showtime pulled this sign from their auction along with some other repros. Good for them!
