Has anyone seen this sign before? From what timeframe would it have been used or in what capacity? Any ideas on value? Thanks for any info--Russell

I believe this sign would date into the 20's. Gasoline is spelled with an 'i' not an 'e' like many earlier signs. Second, the idea of 'high grade' versus standard products was becoming more widespread in advertising to denote a better quality product.

Gulf always spelled it Gasoline.
Kerosene is listed before Gasoline. Kerosene was the primary petroleum product early in the century.
Note that the sign says Gulf Refining Company, not Gulf Oil Corporation. That could be a good clue to it's age.
I suspect it's a VERY early sign.

At that time, kerosene was used for heating and light. Gasoline was still a novelty for cars that only were used by the rich. As stated by Bob, I think very early.

Gulf Refining Company turns up in document searches as late as the 20's and the phrase "high grade" in conjunction with Gulf does as well. People often forget that much of the country was not electrified especially in rural areas and thus kerosene was still widespread major product. Also in those same areas many people still used horses for major travel.
Don't re-write history folks, learn to research it.

When researching when an item or phrase was used it's important to look at both ends of the spectrum rather than looking for the latest possible date to back up your opinion. I've seen Gulf "High Grade" advertising from as early as 1915.
Maybe Mark will chime in with his knowledge of Gulf and fonts, and Rick with his knowledge of Gulf.
