Quick question on visible gas pump cylinders...

Why blue tinted glass, what was the reason for that?

May be obvious to some but I have to admit when a good friend recently asked I realized I had never even thought about it before!

The story goes that the gasoline companies thought that the sun might affect the power of gasoline. They added cobalt tint to the glass to act as a sun shade darkener. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Very interesting Paul! Thank you for that. I knew that adding certain elements to glass can change or alter the way it looks, but I wasn't sure if it was done on purpose or not. That makes perfect sense. Very interesting, thank you for posting that...

Gilbert & Barker probably pushed their cylinders more than any other pump company. They advertised heavily the benefits of their NULTRA bowls (as they call them).

Go to this page of my website, look for the ads that have to do with the cylinders and if you click on the picture you will be able to read the ad.
