Hello,

I could use some help. My Dad and my Uncle ran a Sinclair station in 1958. The owners closed it up a short time later when the property was sold for a new business.

I'm building a new house with a shop, and I want to do some minor decoration in memory of my Dad. I doubt I will ever be a collector of this type of stuff, so I plan to use a few reproduction signs for this to save money. Some of the other items will probably be authentic just because they are still cheap and no reproductions are available anyway.

With that in mind I have a couple of questions. I read that the trapezoid logo first started in 1959, correct? Would gas pumps have still used the HC signs in 1958?

What motor oil cans would have been in use that year? I know other cans like the Household Oil and other items were in the red, green, and white cans like this one.(click) We had a lot of that stuff sitting around our house right on up into the 1970's in that style cans. But, no actual motor oil cans, so I have no idea what was being used at that time.

I was thinking about painting one wall similar to the outside of a building, with the green stripes, and large SINCLAIR spelled out, like this one that I cropped from a Danbury model picture. I have other black and white pics that look similar, but the color pics show both red or green SINCLAIR lettering. Which is correct?

Thanks! Please forgive me for using reproduction stuff for this! I need to keep my budget in good shape for my main hobby, my DeLorean.

PS--I'm loving the Company of the Month thread on Sinclair. Wes Maxwell's collection is awesome. The Great old Pics thread is great too. I'm still working my way through it.

I have some info I can pass on. The HC logo was used in 1958. The Dino trapazoid logo first came out in 1959. Gas pumps would have been using the HC globes or Power- X in 1958. Also had decals instead of pump plates.
The oil cans would have been both the Pennsylvania grade and the Opaline. Any can with the trapazoid logo on it would be to new for '58. Couple pictures attached to show a couple.

The Power-X Super Fuel was used from 1953-1957. The Power X over 100 octane was used 1957-1961.

Couple more globes Sinclair used in 1958. There is also a Diesel globe that was used in the same time frame.

There are a lot of lower cost items out there. As a collector, I would recommend buying originals in good condition. Cost is definitely a factor in setting up a display. Good luck and post pictures when you get it set up.

Couple 1950s era signs. The HC that was in use in the 50s. These were made in 24,30,42,48 and 72 inch sizes.(Beware of reproductions). The credit card sign and the Sinclair strip sign; these were made in several different sizes. One piece, two or three. The clean rest room sign was used in a frame and set out front of the station. The Washing and Lubrication signs were also used at a lot of stations.

Good info Wes. I see your Clean Rest Rooms sign has Sinclair in italics. Do you know when that version was put into use?

A friend did a lot of research on when each design of Sinclair cans were put into use. You can see some of that info here.....

Good eye Bob. The rest room sign with the word Sinclair in italics is the newer version. I should have posted this earlier version.

Sorry about the delay checking back here. I had a network server acting up.

I love your collection Wes! If I were to actually start collecting Sinclair items, I would want to emulate you!

Thanks for link Lastgas15.

I should be able to work something up now. The graphics designer where I work is willing to help me set up the lettering for the wall when I get ready to do it. Then add some signs, maps, etc, and I'll be set!

Thanks again for all the help! I'll probably go back into Lurk mode now.
