Thought I would share. Picked up this Quaker State wood framed tin sign the other day. Someone decided for some reason to spray paint the whole sign with white spray paint. Gradually taking off the paint, should look presentable once I'm done. The paint may be a mixed blessing. Time consuming to remove, but may have helped to keep the sign out of the elements and fading. Also trying to date. Shows a G-25 in the lower right corner.

Looking nice...what process are you using to remove the white paint?

Thanks. Lacquer thinner and a rag working a spot at a time. It's taking off the spray paint and not damaging the painted tin. Will be ready for a buffing and waxing when done stripping.

Finally finished the sign. Paint removal took plenty of time. Small sections at a time, making sure original paint was not being removed or discolored. Sign was not perfect to begin with but I think it turned out nice. Nice to rescue a piece of history.

Great to see it removed the paint without attacking the sign paint, nice.

Great job!!
Is this lacquer thinner process generally reliable for this use?
Thanks!
Dave

Dave,

This is the first time I have attempted to remove spray paint from a tin sign. A painter friend of mine recommended the lacquer thinner if the original paint was solid. It worked well on this sign. Always best to test a small area to see how it reacts. After removing the paint I gave it a light buffing to bring out the shine.
