This story starts quite a few years ago when my father passed away. I was talking with his sister, my aunt a few months after the funeral. She herself being in her 90's now, had asked me how I was and what I was up to these days. In the conversation I had mentioned I collected old signs and gas station related items. She asked "Do you keep the old pumps too?" "Did your father ever tell you our family owned a gas station when we were kids?" My heart almost exploded with excitement when those words came out of her mouth! Now my Dad always told me stories over the years about the country store my grandparents owned and how they sold penny candy and had an ice cream window. He loved that place. Now I wasnt into petroliana when we spoke of it back then but I never had remembered him ever saying anything about any gas pumps?! Of course it probably would have went in one ear and out the other back then anyway.

Well my aunt had told me that the store also had a few pumps on the property over to the side. And my grandmother would even come out and pump gas after my grandfather got ill. I was in utter disbelief that my family had a tie to petro. I don't know why it meant so much to me..maybe it's because I love the stuff so much. For years I've wanted to go over and search threw her old photos of the store to see if I could maybe spot the pumps! But unfortunately we never did locate any. I always had thought maybe Auntie Dot's memory had faded and she was mistaken...

Fast forward to this morning. We are moving and my wife and I were cleaning out the attic. My father had lived with us for a time and had a ton of stuff up there we never went through. We came across a box of photos I had never seen. Mainly from his days serving in the air force in the 1950's. Then I turned the page in this old album he had put together and I immediatly felt my eyes well up with tears. There they were dozens of photos of the old store, station island and pumps. Best of all...there were some great pictures of him in front of the island! I had to share this experience..sorry for the long story but today was such a great day for me..

Check in with the local county historical society--they may have some members who knew the store. Might give you a lead on some of the stuff?
