I want apologize for speaking about something i have very little information about. I thought the sign i called a fake was. it had no ir ,the gromets looked to perfect and the lettering looked alittle sloppy. I have a mobil collectors book and it wasnt in that book so now that i have made a jerk out of myself. i will keep my comments to myself until i am more educated. I am mistified on how many cool signs there are out there and I'm mistified on how many people are out there selling repops
BTW I the bought the sign

Like Randy said Ken, it's all part of the learning process. I personally would hate coming into the hobby these days with all of the repros on the market. Some are getting good enough to fool experts in the field, at least for a short time. I'm glad to see you took the high road and admitted the mistake and didn't turn it into a negative situation, which happens all to frequently these days. It takes years to learn in this hobby, and you'll never "know it all"!

If I had to throw a number off the top of my head, there are probably 30 or more genuine Mobil shield pump plate versions that exist. Some are extremely rare, others are plentiful. While helpful, the guidebooks don't show them all or even give a description of all that's out there. Some versions are heavily reproduced, say the blue border Mobilgas and Mobilgas Specials, which started out innocently enough for use on pump restorations. When it was learned adding a few chips and giving it an acid bath you could turn a $25 sign into a $200 sign, the versions now reproduced is increasing by the year as well as the number of shysters purposely selling aged repros. Keep researching on Old Gas and use the search function. There is tons of useful information in the site's archives.
Good luck and happy collecting, it's only just begun!
Darin

Glad you got the sign. The black boarder is my favorite. I have three unrestored Mobil Special pumps with the drop leg pump plates on both sides and happy to have them.

It's all part of the learning curve. I know that you have earned my respect for having the courage to make the above post.

Enjoy the sign!

Hard to tell all the fakes out there these days, people make mistakes just part of being human. Welcome to the site!

About 4 years ago I found this hobby and had a few posts like that. Asked a TON of questions and probably, well more like, likely annoyed a few of the veterans a time or three. A lot to learn in this game. It's best to find a focus on a brand or two that mean something to you or you just like. And be patient and do your research.
Welcome to Oldgas!!

Ken you are a true gentleman for writing the above paragraph. Some people do not do what you just did. I don't know if you are new to the hobby, or just this web-site. Either way enjoy the ride - a lot of great people on here.
