Same head......

I had to have a good side totalizer head...
One difference is the longer totalizer drive shafts. This is the easiest way to change them. I had to split the bad head to get the longer shafts out.

I TRIED it ONCE !
BUT, my second picture would have looked like your 1st, INSIDE & AT THE BOTTOM OF A TRASHCAN !
I found it EASIER to just change the wheels.

Back in the early 1990s I visited PMP who were a large rebuilder of V-R Computers.
I asked them to show me how to replace the number wheel on just one side of the computer. A nice young lady sat down at the bench to show me how. She use special tools, removed the wheels, again use special tool and replaced the wheels, then she said that when she turned the part on the side of the unit, all the numbers would return to 000.
I patiently waited the outcome, the numbers turned and came out to something like 647. This is when I decided, that even though I had a college education, it wasn't in the right subject, and this kind of work was best left to the experts.
Joe, I envy your work.

Joe, have you or anybody ever counted exactly how many parts are in a standard VR unit? I've been asked this question at discussion groups, but never had a good answer. Sam

Boy ...that sounds like a "pool question"
If I count them all and get a total will some one offer a prize for the closest guess??
There are 17 parts in 1 old style 2-R
wheel. That is the flat wheel that is in the middle of the upper or lower wheel bank on the right side of the computer. That means there are over 100 parts in just a full set of wheels.
I would say that it may get to be close to 1000 parts...including pins, washers , etc.
And people wonder why I can't remember stuff!!!!!
Memorize this ......my clock design......
plumbing code, some electric code, health dept. code, building code, passwords for the computer, phone #'s, .....my R.A.M. is full.

Thanks Jack.
PMP was one of our competitors.
She was right...on the newer models it doesn't matter which way you put in the wheels they should have come up right when reset. The special tool you were talking about was what they call a "Dumby Shaft", it keeps the gear on the end of the shaft from catching the shim washers when removing or installing the wheel shaft.

I have only ever built two of the newer style computers over the years. I have only built three computers for a #36 Tokheim. They are the most rare...1 pump took them and it was only built three years.
I have built hundreds of the standard 12" computers over the years
I would say close to 50 or more of the smaller 8" computers.

It was just a few years ago when I finally figured out how to disassemble, repair and re-assemble the wheel itself. Sometimes I have to change the wheel "shell" .
There is not a single part I have not had to replace over the years.....all the parts in the pic are not from that one head.

I haven't forgotten you Mr. Bill.
I have been designing again.
I have three of the bumpers.
I was going to see if anything else came up before I sent them.

I haven't forgotten you either Doug.
The Wayne had only one good nameplate.
I have it put back for you.
I was waiting to see if anything else came up too.

There was someone wanting a dipstick and I lost the email somehow....I forgot who it was ....email me again if you read this

Joe
