Does anyone have a good way of removing the red paint from the letters in a Shell globe. Most of mine has faded away but the remaining red does not come off. I tried priming over the red but when you light up the globe the old paint has a darker silhouette than just the primed areas of the letters. I used a light gray primer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks Spencer

Try paint stripper - the heavy duty non-drip liquid that is sold at Home Depot, Lowes, or any hardware store. It might take 2-3 coats and some patience, but I'd bet it will come off. It won't damage your glass globe as I've had good success doing this with a "Visible Gasoline" globe I own. Greg

I tried using aircraft paint stripper, didn't even touch it. As indicated, the paint is fired on so I know its on there pretty good but it also has come off over time. I'm wondering about using a dremel tool with a small sanding disc on it. Just don't want to get it to hot. Not sure what other people do when repainting the letters.
Thanks

I would op first for bead blasting with baking soda, glass beads, fine sand, etc. with the the globe taped off before I would use a rotary tool. Practice on something else first before you try this. I HAVE NEVER DONE IT SO I AM JUST GIVING MY OPINION. Beware and be careful. Dave

I used some emery paper and water on a shell globe one time. Fingers were tired but it worked. Just took a while

Mask everything except the letters and gently sandblast them to solid milkglass.

Strip off the blasted masking tape and re-tape off the letters.

Set the globe on a small wattage illuminated lightbulb.

Using an airbrush, carefully repaint the lettering with One-Shot sign painters enamel. Watching for even coverage (this is what the lightbulb is for.

When everything is the color you want, clean up the airbrush and go in the house.

Strip off the masking tape the next day and detail any 'extra' or bleeding paint with an Xacto knife or a single edge razor blade.

Enjoy.

Sid, for painting, you can also spray on liquid mask and cut out the letters with an exacto knife. Liquid mask is used to protect tires and auto paintbootgs from overspray, its water soluble. I use it to repaint crowns. Won't work for sand blasting. Tape approach works too.

I'll start with emory cloth, if that doesn't work I will go to bead blasting. Thanks everyone for the advise.

emery cloth will work but your fingers won't like it. if you have access to a bead blaster, might be quicker and easier.
