Same comments every year.Lesson is when you go to sell put it in BJ's. I've heard that the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company closely controls who they allow to consign to the gas/oil auction. I believe they have a select, relatedly small number of almost "professional" consigners who will each bring many items for auction. In other words, I don't believe a common joe (like me) would have much luck trying to bring his one special pump or sign to sell at the auction. This information may be out of date, and I'd welcome any "corrections" from someone with recent, firsthand experience with the B-J gas/oil auction. John

I believe you are spot on. Ron has gone for years and as he told me also, no private people with original stuff anymore.

Rory Brinkman bought a few items from me recently, with the intent to sell @ B-J. When I asked him if I can consign to sell them there instead,he replied,NO.

I know Rory as well and have sold him multiple items over the years. I have tried as well he said whomever consigned cars have first to put items in auction and rorys items.

Again it is a closed auction for everyone except the auction company. No problem, their auction, their stuff. Only problem is if you are a bidder and can't get anything but their stuff. Then who really knows who you are bidding against.

I just got home from Barrett-Jackson. Was my first time, and what a show it is.
I sold 2 items in Monday's auction and 6 items yesterday. Like any auction I've consigned to, had a couple of items I did well on, a couple i was even on, and took a beating on two of them. Overall, had fun and did fine.
I also talked to at least 3 other people with consignments in the auction.
I wanted to run a Dog N Suds neon, but he already had one consigned. I came up with other unique stuff and the items were accepted.
There is a whole different level of customer at this auction, and a gazillion people.
There were lots of hands in the air, seemed to me the vast majority of bids were onsite bidders.
Collector of Illinois Oil Company, Iowa Oil Company, Round Outboard Motor Oil Quarts, St. Louis Gas Pumps, Double Cola, and anything else awesome.

I never trust any auction houses telephone bidders.I'll bet 9 X out of 10 there is no one on the other end. Meaning the auction house is involved in the shill bid.

Have to laugh @ some of their auctioneers fast talking comments in between the bidding: "Think long, think wrong" "Have another sip" "50K to you touch of Grey" "We have a stalker" "Next time buy a clue" "Well aren't you a Consignors Nightmare"

After watching this mornings auction (burned an hour and half of my life) I was a little surprised at the uninteresting lots sold but yet brought big money. That Polly visible pump was a joke, rotating globe and all.
