I want to hang this in my home, but I’m worried about the paint. If it’s real I don’t know what’s in the paint, so I may need to replace it with a reproduction sign. It is magnetic, so it’s steelit’s painted in layers, but is single sided. It’s VERY HEAVY. It measures 15” across. can’t find any reproductions like it, and i can’t find any info on what sizes these signs came in. My fear is it may be some kind of old sample or something. I just can’t find any real concrete info. I offered to sell it to someone because I was so unsure, but they bit my head off, and practically threw it at me saying there was no such thing and that it was “fake”. ? I don’t known why they were so upset, i was only asking $20, and i never claimed to know anything about it. It was just sitting at my garage sale. I think the aumknum signs at hobby lobby even start at 49.99.... ugh... It’s an old gulf oil sign with a blue drop shadow. I can’t fogure out how to post pics here, so please message me if you can help.

You really have to include good photos of the front and back of the sign to get a helpful answer. Posting photos is easy now. Click link to read this "How To" topic: "New: Attaching Photos Directly into Your Posts" http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=703369

Ok figured out how to post pictures. Please let me know what it is and the reason. If you have a source for information, that would be appreciated as well. I pulled this sign out of an old chemical manufacturing warehouse along the Tx coast back in the 80’s.

For $20 I’d take a chance on it! If it was 12inches I’d say repo for sure!! You need to post a picture of the bak of the sign also. Chris

Send me your address & I’ll send you the $25 plus the shipping !! Looks good to me but I’m not a gulf expert, or a sign expert. The stuff they hav been making in India is chipped and rusted like yours, but brand new repo junk. Not saying yours is from India, just that I’m no expert. Someone that knows more about gulf signs than I do will chime in letting u know if it’s real or repo, just give it a bit.Chris

I contacted him and haven't heard back.
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Thanks for all the interest, but no info, which was what I was really looking for. I’m really interested in finding out what it might be. I don’t know anything at all about these things. Can anyone give me any history? What sizes did they come in? Is it real? Even though it’s one sided? If it is real, should I really be concerned about lead? Where could I find a reproduction to replace it with if it is real? I’m more interested in finding out the information about it.

Yes, Alan...you are quite correct. You never said you wanted to sell this sign! I can't tell you about real or not. Believe me, I would if I could. However, as far as your concern about lead content goes, I can tell you that isn't an issue. So, cross "possible lead poisoning" off your list. Now, hopefully someone more knowledgeable about GULF signs than me will help you with your other questions, assuming they haven't already. Best of luck on this. John

I don't know much about Gulf signs but as far as the back of this sign goes it looks old and original consistent with a 1940s early 1950s sign. In my opinion . Peter

I would say 20-30's. This is the earlier logo, but others are the experts. Dave
