Hello.

I picked up this glass bottle because of the company name on the label. My father-in-law worked at Sun Oil for almost 30 years & I thought my husband might like to have it in his shop.

I came across a photo from someone on this forum from 2004 that had a set of Sun Oil salesman sample bottles, but his label was slightly different than mine.

I was hoping someone here could help me date this bottle.

Also I noticed his didn't have a wire pull & was wondering if the one in mine was original to the bottle.

It is 6 3/8" to the top of the bottle, 7 1/4" to the top of the wire pull & is 1 3/8" across the bottom of the bottle.

believe that bottle would have been used in the 30's thru 80's .. ... cool
as we used this type of bottle into the 80's at the refinery
they started phasing the cork bottles out & replacing with the screw tops
that bottle would be dated more accurately by the sunoco label (Steve C.) - help?
below is an example of another sunoco sample bottle too compare with:

Thanks for the information Randy!!

I know the label is very faded & I should have mentioned it in my original post that inside the diamond shape are what I believe are the words "Sun Oils".

I did see on-line that this logo was one of the earliest ones, but I didn't know if this bottle was that old.

Hello Peggy,
Man I love this kind of question!!
This picture is of a little book I have that was put out by the Company. According to the introduction in the book, the books were published monthly and released by Sun Oil Co to the customer base to better explain this new growing industry. The book has the same "Sun OIls" in the setting sun on the sea logo that your bottle has. This particular book is copyright 1916 and I'm sure the logo preceded that date to some degree. But I can't be more specific than that. As you stated, the red letter Sun OIls in the diamond goes back almost to the beginning in 1890. But I do not know what the setting sun was added. Or maybe it was there from the beginning. This logo is seen on Sunoco items up into the 1920's like the can in this ad from 1925. Then by around the late 1920's the logo changes into that which is shown on the bottle Randy posted. (By the way, I have incorrectly stated on this site that the logo Randy posted is 1920's. And although that may not be completely untrue, as it may first show up in the late 20's, But I think to call it a 1930's logo is more appropriate. I haven't been able to compile enough evidence to clearly identify the change over date to myself. So I apologize to the community for that.) I may actually posses the proper evidence, but I would have to dig through a bunch of stuff that is currently packed up.
Anyway Peggy, that gives you a pretty good idea as to the date of your bottle.
By the way, I have several of these bottle, including some with your same logo as your. I've never seen one with the pull ring. Interesting.

P.s., This paper brochure for Sunoco Household oil with the Randy bottle logo is print dated 1934. So I know the logo change happened either then or before
.

Thank you so much for the confirmation of the date Steven C.!!

So I think I can safely say it is c.1915 & that should cover the dating range.

I had no idea that there was such a thing as salesman samples for gas & oil products. LOL

Obviously very early carriage tank wagon without the Diamond.

Although, I'm not exactly sure what that might be above the "E" in the word "the"?? Kind of looks like a diamond?

Thank you again Steve C.!!!

I gave him the bottle last night & he thought it was extremely cool.

He is going to make some type of holder so he can set it on a shelf in the shop & not worry about someone knocking it over.
