I'm looking at a sign that appears to be in fantastic condition, one small chip. It's described as "some clear coat". My main question is: "Is the primary reason to clear coat a sign to make a dull porcelain surface brighter and shinier?" I have one sign that has been clearcoated but it was also restored. Additionally, if there is only clear coat on a porcelain sign can it safely be removed without any harm?
Thank you for your input,
Michael

Clear coating porcelain can even out the shine on a sign, getting rid of dull spots. Clear also covers up paint repairs performed on chips and such. I used to do it years ago, frowned upon now. Sounds like he's being upfront with it at least having been cleared. You can strip off the clear safely but what you'll get when you are all done is unknown.
