I recently purchased this Atlantic “Fried Egg” Porcelain Pump Plate. After researching it, I saw that it was used between 1915 and 1925...pretty old! After I first got it I washed it with dish washing detergent and warm water. The edges still have a grime that look like it would come off...but...I don’t know if further cleaning would be the wise thing to do. It has several repair spots that look like the were done a long time ago (I sure do not want to mess with them). I wanted some expert opinions before I do anything concerning further cleaning.
If you were me, would you leave it alone or would you try to clean it further?
Thanks for any advice! Steve

If it was me, I would strip off the touch-up paint, go through the possible cleansers to clean-up (all kinds of posts on oldgas for cleaners to use), and maybe hit it with a buffer to shine up a little. I'm more aggressive with this just because I've done it so many times. The porcelain is pretty tough generally. If you really like the touch-up, you can always put it back on, this time getting the white to be not so off color.
...your not gaining a lot of value by doing this, maybe some, more so you have a nicer sign in your collection. My gut is you'll get some of the discoloration to come out, but not alot. Once that outer layer of porcelain is gone through it seems to stain permanently.

You wont clean the white area much mostly the real dark area on top should come clean. I agree with randy just hang it and upgrade later.

I always clean with Dawn dish soap and some Bar Keepers Powder and usually use a old toothbrush. If it does not clean it up then I stop.

Well...I want to finish this thread with a, as Paul Harvey use to say, the “Rest of The Story”. I just about decided to leave this 1915 Fried Egg Survivor alone. But we have had 6 degree weather in Bryan, Texas for the last few days. And I had the pump plate inside staring at me every time I walked by. Do you remember when you were a kid and you studied and considered jumping off the high board at the local pool and never got up the courage to do it..then in a split second you threw caution to the wind and ran and jumped...like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid jumping over the cliff to the river below? Well...I Jumped!
I decided that if I ruined the plate I would stomach it.
I will let you decide what you think and I always appreciate my colleagues unvarnished opinions. Now the question is...what do you think...did it come out better or was I a dummy for even taking taking the risk?
And if you think I am a dummy, that is okay...my wife calls me that all the time! Thank you! Steve
I posted Before/After pics.
