I haven't posted in a long long time, but I am finishing up a short 39 that has taken me several years to get around to. It's a do-it-yourself job, and I've got the painting almost complete. Nearly all the old finished metal pieces have remnants of a couple layers of old paint and are pitted. Short of replacing all of them with repros, what is the recommended way to clean these and finish them up? I don't want mirror-like a chrome finish on them. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well, if they were originally chromed, first I'd take a paint stripper like Zip Strip and some very fine steel wool and get rid of the remaining paint. Then get yourself a good chrome polish and follow the instructions. Maybe finish with a buffing wheel. You can't really fix pitting without re-plating, but you can make it look a bit better.
