This guy is about 35 minutes away from me. I know %99 of his stuff is original and if you are thinking of bidding I could go look at it for you.
Thanks, Phil

Hi. I have a similar item that I know came out of a Texaco station. It was a mess when I got it and had to reso some of the letters, but I feel it is a Texaco item. Will post a picture later.

Fake.. texaco decal is to white when compared to rest of clock face, and they did a poor job of centering it, too high up

Well, it came out of an old Texaco bulk plant. It was in a Texaco station and the owner showed a picture of it to me that was taken in 1957 (calender in the background) and the owner was in it and much younger. It had damage on the letters that I had restored.

...the black border around the Texaco logo is uneven, as if it had been crudely trimmed...it isn't even centered on the clock's face...
...no way did this clock ever look like this in 1957...maybe it was a recent photo of his look-alike son, with an old calendar hanging on the wall - far fetched?...maybe, but not as far-fetched as this thing (or the other one on ebay) actually being a vintage Texaco piece...

I have no horse in this race. I just do a lot of looking and listening--and reading. If you look closely at the wood surrounding the dial, there are finger marks in the dust near the edge. It looks like it had been laying horizontal, picked up and hung up. Why wouldn't someone completely dust an item before taking a picture? And if it was laying down, would someone hang it solely for the picture? The wood looks like cherry, and obvious screws + cherry wood does not compute. (Wood and a metal upper surround also looks odd.) Combine the fonts with what the others have said, and I'd be right suspicious.

RE: the clock on ebay: Thats a neat old clock but I don't think its an original Texaco item. I'm no Texaco expert by any means but I see several problems with it. First it says "trust the man with the star". Texaco's slogan was "Trust your car to the man that wears the star". Secondly that slogan is shifted slightly clockwise. At the lower left it says "gas". I would think it should say "gasoline". The bottom area looks like it should hold slide in menu board type letters but these appear to be painted or possibly vinyl letters. I would think the top line should read "full service" (and the "station" part shouldn't even be there), the second line "mechanic on duty". Again I think that "gas" should be replaced with "gasoline". Also note there is no period between gas and oil but there are periods between the other words on that line. The white background on the face does not match the background of the arched advertising area. Lastly, its a private auction. That always throws up a red flag. It looks like a cool old clock that someone has monkeyed with. Its probably worth the $305 that has been bid but I think others must suspect its not an original Texaco piece or the bidding would be much higher by now.
Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros. http://www.lastgas15.com/

I saw this clock and agree with Bob, I suspect it had a few flaws in it also. It is a neat old clock, but well too rich for me. He stated that he picked it up from a collector and that he was sold as original. The seller suspected it might not be real but deals with the guy on a regulat basis and did not want to jeporadize dealing with him in the future. I think it is not the real deal upon inspection.
Phil
