I read his edited description, but still can't picture where/how it was used.
Can someone show or explain?
TIA.

Globe holding base for STANDARD TORCH FLAME. Was mounted to top of sign to hold flame, rest of torch is in the porcelain on sign.

That seems pretty reasonable to me. Does a normal size globe fit in there? A glass or plastic one or either?

An adapter would have to be made. Been quite a few years since I looked, I think the flame has a 5" base.
To mount on shelf, I welded an inverted T to hold it. Hard to tell in photo, but it's 3 pieces [2 sides & top].

I have a complete Standard, sign in the yard, which includes the complete torch assembly. The flame is held in place with a modified wedge ring which fits down inside the torch head. Mine was complete when I bought it, however, judging from the people who have asked me about it,I think the porcelain flame holder is a lot harder to find than the flame part if you are wanting to have a complete sign. JT,
What is not being mentioned here is that this was on the top of a large sign on top of a tall pole. No globe was used here, just a nice porcelain base for the flame that was above the sign.
On or off the sign, this makes a nice display.
cmoeon66 describes the sign.
