Dennis, I'm not sure of what ESSO stands for, but Standard Oil Company of Indiana made a good case in court that since you only hear the two letters, S & O that it stood for Standard Oil. Esso had started marketing in Standard (Ind) territory(each of the Standard compnies was assigned a marketing territory in the 1911 anti-trust break up of Standard Oil). Standard(Ind) took Esso to court and won. ESSO had to abandon Satandard's territory or market under a different name. Sohio had blocked them from marketing under the ESSO and ENCO names in their territory too. Esso bought up many smaller companies and marketed under their names. Eventually they changed the name to Exxon for the whole operation. Bob

I was always under the impression that ESSO stood for "Eastern States Standard Oil". In fact, I believe I've seen that on an oil can or two.

I agree with Lastgas, the ESSO word is not an acronym. I have read this in several books on the history of Standard Oil. You only hear the "SO" when you say it and it stands for Standard Oil.
