Thanks for the response on the "Standard Service" sign. No, I have not got the pump yet. He still uses it to fuel his tractors. As far as the story goes on the sign. I met this old guy about 15 years ago in a small town with a population of about 25. He has been on the same property since he was a child 86 years ago. Over the years I have spent time listening to his stories and have gained his TRUST and he has let me dig further in the piles. This is the 5th sign I have bought from him.

When I bought the Standard sign I didn't have enough cash on me and there are no ATM's for miles, so he let me take the sign and owe him the balance (my lucky day). Not many old timers will do that anymore. When we finally made the deal on the sign he said "This is truly the end of an era" and I think he shed a tear.

Signs like this don't have a value to me. The history and the story are priceless and I wouldn't sell them for anything. Guys, signs, and stories like this are fading FAST. There's not much left there but I will end up getting the pump and the remaining items in due time.

Great story Matt, thanks for sharing. I agree that knowing the history of something, be it a sign or a pump or any item for that matter, is greater than any monetary value it might have. A year+ ago I put up a post on a greasing sign that I found here in Hillsdale that was installed on a building in 1920 and has been here ever since. To me my sign is priceless as well.

I bought these three cans from another Old Gasser since I didn't have them and they were all in one place and the right quality! LOL
The Phillips sign came from an Ebay (best offer) auction and i really like it! I bid one one at the Iowa Gas Auction and didn't get it , so when this one popped up with better quality at a lot lower price---I jumped on it!

Beautiful signs... can I ask what you are using to mount the LUBRICATION letters on the wall above the signs? I have a full set of MARFAK LUBRICATION, BATTERIES & TIRES, OIL & GAS and USED CARS but am using straight pins to hang them... I did receive a half dozen or so stainless clips still attached to a few letters when I bought them...

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

Thanks!

I'm using 3M industrial strength double sided tape (it's about 1/16" thick). I mounted the letters on a piece of plexiglass so I can move them as a unit easily if I had to.
