This is a double-sided, porcelain sign approximately 30" x 30". It has a mounting hole at the top, one on each side and one at about the bottom 4th of the sign. The porcelain is chipped around all four holes.

How would this sign have been displayed back in its day?

Any comments appreciated.

Larry

It was a curb sign, or lollipop. Cast iron base with pole and a grooved frame that grasped the bottom 1/2 or so of sign.......

Ok, but what purpose would the holes have served, especially the ones at the top and lower middle? As years went by, the sign was probably nailed against a wall causing the porcelain to chip around the holes.

Could the sign have been suspended in a metal loop using the outside holes to attach to the loop?

Guess the sign could have been produced to allow for multiple types of display.

Anyone have photos an original display showing a metal stand would be greatly appreciated. Would like to find or make something similar to what was originally intended as the display.

Again, appreciate any ideas/comments.

I suspect the top-center hole and the hole between the sixes were drilled out by somebody.

yes, correct. It was held in the frame by the two side holes. Those other holes in middle/top were added.

Who ever drilled the holes probably did not use a ruler or anything like that because they appear to not be in line.

Thanks for all the feedback. Someone drilling the top and middle holes would also account for the chipped porcelain around those holes, I would guess. The chips around the side holes would be likely be from mounting in the original stand and/or against a wall.

Chips around the side holes are probably from sign being flexed by wind or being knocked over. As Signs and Neon said the frame only supported the bottom part of the sign.
