I will be placing pole signs outdoors. I had two questions.

1. What is the best way to protect the porcelain for outdoor use? Is there any protective coatings? The sign will be 18' in the air.

2. How would you best protect areas of porcelain loss?
i.e. where there is bare metal or rusted metal - from porcelain loss?

Thanks,
Al

porcelain signs are made for outdoor use-
put'em up & don't worry about it-
the weather will add patina which looks good.. cool

Have you checked local zoning laws? Some county's/city's have codes.
Best way to protect against future damage it to confiscate all BB & 22cal firearms.

As db said, a number of Municipalities,Towns and County's have zoning laws against having signs above a certain height...

Here in Longview, a gentleman put up a Texaco lolly-pop and the City and him went to go to Court over it... And he lost.... The sign wasn't even lit at night and they made him take it down....

I live outside of town and in farmland USA. There a lots of tall grain bins and such. I will double check regualtions. I doubt if there are any.

I am especally concerned about the areas of porcelain loss and the rusted areas - should they be sanded, primed and painted?

Thanks,
Al

I would lightly sand or clean the chipped areas being careful not to damage the porcelain in the surrounding area. Then brush on Tremclad rust paint that is the same color as the chipped areas. Small cans of Tremclad metal paint are readily available in a wide assortment of colors. That way the metal will be protected. If left unprotected and exposed to the elements you will eventually end up with a hole in the sign as the metal will corode away. You don't want that kind of patina.

Grain Bins/Elevators/Wind Turbines are part of farming, but adv. signs [new/old] are a different code.

Paint all bare areas w/ Rustoleum oil base to protect from rusting & staining the porcelain.
