My wife gave me this for Christmas. She picked it up last summer while garage saleing. What exactly is this thing. It appears to be petro related.

It was used to check the gas coming out of the pump to make sure it was calibrated correctly. I Believe.

The gallon cans were used by owners or dealers to verify pump output. There are five gallons ones used by state or county or even city weight and measure departments. The five gallon ones are more accurate because of larger amount. These are still used today. The inspectors would come in and test each pump,if it passed it gets an inspection sticker if it fails the pump has to be shut down till its fixed,It was not a good day when the inspector came, the last one I remember in the 80's cost $10.00 per pump.

Well that is great! I was hoping it isn't something from the dairy industry. With a name like Seraphim it has a religous connotation. It appears to be, maybe 20's or 30's ?

I have one from the same company that looks a little different, it's patent date is 1918. Neat item to have around.

I guess I got it. That's what mine looks like. A glas tube with a brass piece on one side for measuring and one side for company info.
