Here is another shot of that sign that I was wondering about...

At this angle you can see that the sigh is indeed oval shaped. Due to the amount of rust under the paint, I am confident that either this is a porcelean sign that was sandblsted & painted, or just a new piece of metal that was painted after the original sign was removed. Notice the details under the mount. I was wondering if this would reveal it as an old gas sign or not, or if it was built for this sight. Because there was lights at one time, I thought that it was moved from somewhere else.

When I went up the road to check out the other sign...

My fears were realized. Tire tracks could be seen up to where the sign was. The base was cut with a sawzall, and the sign was removed.
Sadly enough, this is what is happening in this area. Relics and landmarks are dissapearing almost daily. I will try to contact the landowners to see if I can RESCUE he other sign. I'll keep you posted...

The worst part of the whole deal is I bet it was taken for scrap. I know we have had nothin but problems here since scrap is over $100 a ton. That looks like a standard sign pole to me. I know where there is one just like it but has a perfect standard sign in it, but the only dray back is its built in to the wall thats holding up the roof of a carwash. Go figure

Someone here probably wouldn't have screwed up the pole like that...

I guess the general moral of the story here is that it's nice to leave artifacts like these out "in nature" for everyone to enjoy, and the average enthusiast should be more than satisfied with just taking photos, but if you (as someone who lives in the vicinity and can do the appropriate research, keep up with current events, etc.) know that it is under valid and imminent physical threat, you should do everything within your power to legally preserve and/or salvage it, even if it is just "for yourself," before those who simply don't care just trash it.

Pretty sad, Thunder but...we all knew it was just a matter of time and it would be gone and appreciated by few or nobody. It is ironic, however, that it did disappear after just recently appearing on this site though. Better load up the Smith and Wessons guys. LOL

There were two signs and there still is one sign left. When I drove by a few weeks ago I noticed the one missing. Sad that someone cut it down with a sawsall...

Man those are nice signs. It looks like when they set that pole that they plumbed it up, then poured around it. The base plate may be way down there. Almost need a hoe to dig it out , then break concrete away. Or do what the guy who got the first one did. He's probably got his eye on that one too. Good luck. Jim
