It looks like I'm gonna be traveling to Oxnard, CA from the end of Feb. thru the middle of May. Can anyone tell me of any gas/oil swap meets or displays that I should check out while I'm there and where they are located?
thanks,
Tony

Several of us live in this area including Jim Sharpe in Port Hueneme. He has an auto repair shop and nice collection of petro stuff. Ray Seider is in Carpenteria to the north and has an awesome collection of signs and more, and let's not forget professor Dick Bennett in Santa Paula who helped with the displays at the oil museum there and has an awesome collection of his own. If you want to drive an extra hour north to Solvang and Buellton I can show you the Mendenhall collection which I can assure you would be well worth the drive and you can visit the History Room of "Service Town, USA" at Andersen's Pea Soup in Buellton. It was named service town because of all of the service stations that lined Highway 101 at one time.

As for swap meets and shows ,Roy Reeds gas bash is in April in Fontana, California and you can't miss the Pomona Swap Meet if you haven't done that before (both the last weekend of April I think). I go to the Ventura Swap Meet on occasion along with Jim Sharpe and every once in a while we find a petro treasure among the shabby chic there. You might even find Gas Pump Rob selling gas pumps. He lives in Fillmore just past Dick B.

Other than that there isn't much to see around here...

Hey that sounds interesting. Hopefully I can spend my weekends/free time taking in some of these sights and it'll keep me out of trouble. That's a lotta of miles away from home with my keeper. Although, the wife and daughter have already decided that they are coming out for a week to visit some realitives in Somis.
When it gets closer, I'll try to get some contact info from you.
Thanks
Tony

Hope you have an enjoyable time out here. If you are also a bit of a car nut, the Petersen Automotive Museum on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles is good for a few hours. It was founded by Hot Rod magazine publisher, the late Bob Petersen. They have a repro of a Richfield station in the museum with other petro pieces that is really cool. Very close by at The Farmers Market, sita a repro of a Gilmore station that is awesome! Plenty of good places to eat at the Farmers Market. If memory serves me correctly, the land there was part of the Gilmore dairy farm where oil was discovered and launched the Gilmore oil business. Also, The La Brea Tar Pits is really cool. It is nestled among pricey commercial real estate in the Wislshire District of Beverly HIlls. They have awesome displays as to how the Tar Pits drew oil people in the early days of the oil bix in Los Angeles. It is near the Farmes Market and Petersen Museum. Dave Folck

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you west coast guys, then I'll be able to put some faces to the names. The Peterson Museum is something I will try to catch. I'm like a lot of others, I have always been into cars, since before I could walk, anyway, I was just looking for a gas pump to put in front of my garage when this petrol bug bit me. It is definately addictive!!

Couple sites you might want to check out for your trip. The NHRA drag racing museum is in Pomona (same place as the Pomona Swap Meet) so you might want to see that...

Here is the Petersen Museum as mentioned...

http://www.petersen.org/

I haven't been to either one but have heard both are great!

Pity you my friend. You're right, there is nothing to do in Needles. Might find an old pump dump somewhere out there in that dessert. Just don't fall down any old mine shafts.

Might be worth making the drive into LA area to Petersen's Museum. It would be a bit of a haul to come all the way up our direction. There are some collectors in the Orange County area but I haven't seen any of them posting here. Dick might have some ideas what else is down that way.

I'm pretty sure he stripped that whole are of pumps several years ago and what he didn't get Gas Pump Rob has picked up since then!

On the east side of the river, take the road towards Bull Head. About 3/4 of the way there take the road to Oatman, Old 66. Then head on east to the Museum in Kingman.
IF your still board after that, stay on east bound 66, Hackberry, Peach Springs, Grand Canyon Caverns & Seligman then return to Kingman on I-40. That should take you most of the day.

Thanks guys I will do just that. Dick I went to Bullhead a couple times so I know where you are talking. The antique shops there had nothing & I mean nothing gas & oil related. Not even one oil can. If I am still bored I will shoot up to around LA. I dont mind driving at all. Thanks alot & maybe just maybe I will find something. Fingers are crossed
