I have had this sign for a long time and before I hang it up I finally decided to see what condition the sign was under the paint - it was a lot better than I thought.
Any idea what years these were used?

Some rubbing compound will take away those rust stains there also. Nice surprise.

Wow what a great and fun way to find a sign!! Here is the only pic I have of what looks to be your version of the sign with the black border. Apparently she's not to happy with the photographer. Hard to say but looks 40's I would guess. Maybe early 50's. S /& H goes all the way back to the 30's so that's not much help. As HI-Octane stated, these signs were used over a long period, and with very little variation. One variation however is the black border like yours has. From what I've seen, the earliest versions did not have this and then it went away again as the 60's-70's signs dont have it. At least from the limited research I've put into these. STudy old pictures and figure out when that black border comes and goes. Let us know what you find.

I have found many great signs painted over. I bought an old Exide battery sign from a neighbors barn, with one side painted over with Barn Sale in thick paint. After 8 hours scraping, I cleaned the sign off. Its cool, because it says"Exide Batteries- Sales-Service-Rentals" Who ever heard of renting batteries? I did a similar procedure striping paint from a covered New Idea farm literature rack.
Good oil cans don't wait for people, people wait for them.

I love thick old lead paint....nothing protects a beautiful porcelain sign for a half century better. A little elbow grease and you find a jewel.
