Buffing & clear coating is good for approx. 5-7 years indoor display, shorter outside. You'll have a bigger interest by not buffing. Several fingers have been LOST/MANGLED when Buffing.

I start with bead blasting, 320, 400, 600 grit to take out all pipe wrench marks then buff to high luster, clear coat.

Mark, thanks for the tip on the Flitz product. I'll have to give that stuff a try! The video convinced me to go out and buy a bottle!

yes, great video! I'll be ordering both the spray and the flitz cream. That was cool. I guess you could use the flitz with a buffer wheel.

You can save some money & get it looking really good if you soak it in 1/2 solution white vinegar & 1/2 solution of table salt. That's all that's in those spray cleaners. That will take the tarnish off & take it down to it's natural base metal. Now take it out & rinse & towel dry it. Rub any good commercial metal polish like MAAS/FLITZ on it and it will shine like a new penny.
I wouldn't really clear coat it as it will turn a different shade when you do,as well as be too shiney for many,as well as yellow over time and then you'll have to strip it & reclean/polish all over again.

Our electrical shop used FLOURMETRIC acid (not sure of that spelling) to clean brass and copper contacts in electrical switches. That stuff will make corroded parts look brand new very quickly. The container it came in, said "BRITE SPECIAL" .. It is also used to etch glass, so its pretty potent stuff.
