Can anyone tell me if this truly associated with oil/gas or just a milk jug. I ask because it has Gulf along the top...any info is appreciated. Not sure at the moment if it's painted or if it's a green patina (brass) I'll guess it' painted for now. Sorry but this is the only pic I have to access with.

Thanks for looking

I have a GULF, TEXACO, WOCOPEP, and STANDARD just like milk cans. They are actually older than the later ribbed cans.

We have one of these, but ours must have had something in it that froze because the bottom is convex. Now I have to figure out how to get it back in, maybe the guy that Kevin had to remove his concrete! LOL

Always looking for Mississippi company items, Billups, southland, ride with rose.

I just passed on it...the cap was the same for milk...couldn't wrap my head around it being gas/oil related. Not the screw on like the Elasco (sp) cans. Believe this one had been used as a planter for too long...rotten. Thanks for chiming in.

For sure bulk oil truck can. This don't mean motor oil. More than likely heating and lighting.

Easy way to tell if it's dairy vs. oil:
Stainless steel or heavy tinplate = milk or cream
Anything else (copper, iron, aluminum, galvanized) = possibly oil

The oldest milk cans were tinplate to protect any stray iron or copper from oxidizing the milk. Those are often painted with a number which belongs to the farmer. The stainless steel is a high quality and may be stamped 3A or marked with a manufacturer's name or a dairy name. That said, I have a brass tag from a local dairy which was used to mark the cans which met its standards.

Randy is correct, Although I have never found a ribbed pennant 10 gallon I have several 5 gallon ribbed. And as it has already been mentioned smooth cans predates ribbed cans. All the pennant cans have stamped number to be dropped with customer and was tracked to make sure they were returned or a core charge was to be paid.

Here's a BA one. The lid and can are both stamped. Property of British American Oil Company Ltd.

Notice anything in common here?

If they are all Embossed with Brand Names. Not painted on!

Some just had initials above the handle.
