You sure did a great job on your pump. I purchased a Tokeim 36B pump sight unseen in AR. I got pictures of it (missing the panels). There are no model numbers on it so now I am wondering how do I tell if it is really a Tokheim? I have tried to attach pictures for the last 4 hours. Can't figure it out.

If you will email your pictures to me, I will give you my opinion on what you have purchased.

If I could figure out how to attach the pictures, it would help. The guy I bought it from still has it listed at the below site with his picture- It is dated Sept 5 Vintage gas pump for sale $600 Mayflower antiques by owner. I tried emailing them to you and got it back as undeliverable. Any help you can give me, I sure would appreciate it. Jim 573-543-5305

Thanks- now for the hard part of restoring it. Does everyone try to find original panels or reproduction? There are so many pumps, one nicer than the next. I want to do it right. Do you have any suggestions?

Congrats on your purchase....nice pump for your first!

You came to the right site to get advise; many knowlegable members who are willing to help. I won't claim to be any expert, but I will offer some advise for your consideration.

As far as keeping parts original or replacing with reproduction.....that will come down to how much you want to spend. Some restore their pumps with original globes, ad. glass, pump plates etc. While you consider which route to take, below are some things you can work on now.

- gut the pump (take the motor out of the pump to reduce weight)
- keep the calculating head; also known as the Veeder-Root and there is a member on this site who rebuilds them/cleans them up
- Sand blast and paint the pump frame
- Sand blast and prime the pump panels while you decide on color/brand of fuel...you'll have to purchase some as I believe you said they were missing.
- Polish or re chrome any weathered pieces.
- Re- do the electrical wiring to avoid a FIRE

There are several sites you can google for reproduction parts. Check the classifieds on this site for parts that may pertain to your pump.

Good luck with the restoration, keep us posted. Careful though, this hobby is addictive!!

If the top is good, no cracks or missing parts...it's worth what you paid for the entire pump.

Most everything you are missing can be bought as new reproduction parts.

Good luck, 36B's are great pumps!

Your pump is not a showcase pump.

If you would like to see more pictures of your pump, see this page of my website:

Other than the picture on craigs list and the ones I have posted, I won't be able to get any other pictures until October. My brother-in-law picked up the pump for me because he doesn't live to far from the guy. I'm in MO and am going down to pick it up then. Getting anxious. Thanks for all your info.

I would follow the directions Clinton stated about dis assembly and sandblasting. As many have said the parts are available reproduction and will work fine. Congrats on your first pump.

Thanks, Phil

Thanks for all your help. It will be a long three weeks before I can get down to AR and pick up my pump. In the meantime, I just keep reading on what everyone is doing and looking for.

Thanks again.
Jim

To get you more excited while waiting here are some pictures of mine when I restored it in 2008. I bought new sheet metal because in the end I would have spent about the same trying to save my rough sheet metal. I also powder coated it sense the sheet metal was new. It was cheaper to powder coat than paint but the finish is not as shiny as a paint finish can be.

Not sure if this question is out of the ballpark for this discussion. You mentioned powder coating. What is an approximate difference is cost and quality between PC and automotive paint?
